Find Downloads in Windows File Explorer

Select Downloads under Home or in the left navigation pane. In Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, known folders such as Downloads are pinned there by default, though you or an administrator may have changed the layout. Microsoft’s Windows 11 File Explorer guidance explains how to display and pin known folders.

If Downloads is not shown, select Home, then use the Up control near the address bar to display known folders. Right-click or press and hold Downloads, then choose Pin to Quick access.

To look for a file, search from inside Downloads first. If it may have been saved elsewhere, search from This PC; Microsoft notes that this search is slower but more in-depth. These File Explorer steps also apply to Windows 10, but its interface and support status differ. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the operating system still works, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Find Downloads on a Mac

Open Finder from the Dock and select Downloads in the sidebar.

If Downloads is not in the sidebar, use Finder’s Go menu, or adjust which items appear in the sidebar in Finder settings.

To go directly to the folder, choose Finder > Go > Go to Folder, enter
~/Downloads, and press Return. The tilde (~) stands for your current user’s home folder. -
You can also click the Downloads folder or stack in the Dock and choose Open in Finder. The Dock item can be removed or displayed differently; its absence does not mean the folder is missing.
Apple identifies Downloads as the default destination for items downloaded from the internet, received as attachments, or accepted through AirDrop. Apple’s Finder guide describes the folder and ways to find items.

Check where your browser saved the file
The standard Downloads folder is only the usual destination. A browser may have a different save location configured, or may ask where to save each file. Its download list shows recent downloads; the configured location identifies where files are being saved.

Google Chrome

To see recent downloads, open Chrome’s More menu and select Downloads.

To inspect the save destination, open More > Settings > Downloads. Check the location shown, or whether Chrome is set to ask where to save each file.

When unchanged, Chrome documents these desktop defaults: Users<username>Downloads on Windows 10 and later, /Users/<username>/Downloads on Mac, and /home/<username>/Downloads on Linux. These are defaults, not a guarantee of the current destination. Google Chrome Help provides the download-list and location instructions. Removing an entry from Chrome’s list does not by itself delete the saved file: “The file will be removed from your downloads page on Chrome, not from your computer.”
Microsoft Edge
Open Settings and more > Settings > Downloads and inspect the Location field. Microsoft says the displayed path is where Edge is saving downloaded files. Microsoft Edge’s download-location guidance shows this setting.

If the Downloads folder is empty

Check the browser’s download list. It can help identify the file and which browser downloaded it. If the item is listed but clicking it fails, the list alone does not establish whether the file still exists at its original path.

Check the browser’s current save location. Use Chrome’s More > Settings > Downloads or Edge’s Settings and more > Settings > Downloads. The destination may have been changed or selected separately for that download.

Search by filename. Start within Downloads. On Windows, broaden the search to This PC if needed. On Mac, search from Finder or jump to
~/Downloadsusing Go > Go to Folder.
Finding a history entry is not proof that a file remains at its original path, and an empty folder does not establish why the file is missing. These steps help locate a saved download; they do not guarantee recovery of a deleted file.
