His standout was the combination of multisport tools, navigation, a bright AMOLED screen and connectivity options that can work beyond a phone’s cellular coverage. That makes it an unusually capable phone-free companion—but not a replacement for checking service coverage or carrying a phone when safety depends on reliable contact.
What impressed the reviewer
Miller tested the 51 mm fēnix 9 Pro for a month and used it across several sports and everyday activities. He reported accurate location tracking and good heart-rate performance in his own sessions; those are his observations, not results from a controlled comparison or a guarantee for every wearer. He called it “clearly the best Garmin watch I have ever worn and a true flagship watch.” That is a personal assessment, not an independently established ranking. ZDNET’s review.

The appeal is broader than exercise tracking. The tested 51 mm model has a 1.5-inch, 466 × 466-pixel AMOLED display, and Garmin says fēnix 9 Pro AMOLED displays offer up to 3,000 nits of brightness. The brightness figure is Garmin’s specification claim, not a measurement of Miller’s particular unit. Screen specifications can vary by size and configuration. Can you leave your phone at home?
Potentially, for some outings and with the right model, service plan and coverage. Garmin’s U.S. listing describes inReach features that can include LTE and satellite connectivity, messaging, voice calling, LiveTrack and interactive SOS on applicable configurations. These capabilities depend on an active service plan, and LTE coverage is not universal. Satellite communication and SOS also have limitations, so the watch should not be treated as guaranteed emergency access. Garmin’s U.S. product listing.

- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
Before relying on the watch without a phone, check that the exact variant supports the features you need, that service is available where you will use it, and that your plan is active. Connectivity beyond cellular coverage is useful redundancy; it is not a reason to assume every message or emergency request will get through.
Which fēnix 9 Pro configuration should you consider?
Garmin’s U.S. listing includes 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm sizes, with Pro variants that can include inReach connectivity and AMOLED or solar charging lens options. Availability and feature combinations depend on the specific configuration, so compare the listing for the size and lens you intend to buy rather than assuming the 51 mm review unit represents every model. - Case size and fit: Miller’s findings come from the 51 mm watch. A smaller size may suit a different wrist or preference; try the case dimensions if fit is a concern.
- AMOLED or solar lens: The choice changes the display and charging approach. Prioritize the screen experience you want and compare the specifications for the exact variant.
- inReach features: Choose a configuration with the connectivity features you actually need, and include an active service plan in the total cost.
- Sports and navigation: The review’s strongest evidence is Miller’s experience across running, biking, rowing, fishing and hiking—not a lab comparison against competing watches.
Price and accessories: check the exact package
ZDNET’s September 28, 2026 review listed $1,300 at Amazon for the tested configuration. That is a dated listing price, not a verified current price. Miller also said the watch did not include the newest fabric QuickFit band and that he separately bought a 26 mm Garmin QuickFit ComfortFit fabric band for $59.99. Check current package contents, price and band compatibility for your selected watch size before buying; the cited review does not establish that the 26 mm band fits every variant. ZDNET’s review.
