To change Bluetooth audio settings on Android, first enable Developer options: find Build number in Settings, tap it seven times, then return to Settings and open Developer options. The precise menu path and available audio controls vary by phone, Android version, and connected audio device.
Enable Developer options
- Find Build number. Open Settings and search for “Build number” if your phone has Settings search. Otherwise, check About phone; on some manufacturers, Build number is under About phone > Software information. For example, Google lists Settings > About phone > Build number for Pixel and Settings > About phone > Software information > Build number for Samsung Galaxy S8 and later. Exact wording can differ. Android’s Developer options guide has further device examples.
- Tap Build number seven times. If prompted, enter your device PIN or pattern. Android should display a confirmation that developer options are enabled.
- Return to Settings and open Developer options. It may appear on the main Settings screen or in another location, depending on the device. The setting is sometimes named or placed differently by manufacturers.
Android 4.2 and later require this activation step. You do not need to enable USB debugging to adjust Bluetooth audio settings; USB debugging is a separate control.

Find and change Bluetooth audio settings
In Developer options, look for Bluetooth-related controls in the networking or audio section. Android documents Bluetooth AVRCP version, Bluetooth Audio Codec, optional codec controls, Bluetooth Audio Sample Range, Bluetooth Audio Bits Per sample, Bluetooth Audio Channel Mode, and Bluetooth Audio LDAC Codec. Your phone may not show every setting or use precisely these labels.

- Connect the headphones or speaker you intend to use. Some phones expose a connection-specific codec choice only while an audio device is connected.
- Open the relevant Bluetooth audio setting and select an option that your phone offers.
- Change one setting at a time, then listen for sound quality and connection stability. If the option is unavailable or playback becomes unreliable, restore the default or choose a supported, more stable option.
What each Bluetooth control does

Android’s BluetoothCodecConfig and BluetoothLeAudioCodecConfig references document platform configuration fields such as codec, sample rate, bits per sample, and channel mode. Those API descriptions explain Android concepts; they do not guarantee that a particular phone exposes each control in its Settings interface.

Choose a codec or quality mode by compatibility and conditions
There is no universally best codec or LDAC mode for every Android phone and Bluetooth device. Start with a codec both ends support. If LDAC is available, choose an audio-priority mode when sound quality is your priority and the connection is reliable; choose connection priority or adaptive bitrate if playback stutters or the wireless link is less dependable. Test in the place and with the device you actually use.
A codec missing from the list is not necessarily a setup mistake. Android’s documented codec types reflect source-device hardware support, while the connected headphones or speaker and installed codec implementation also affect availability. A settings change cannot add a codec that the phone or audio device does not support; an arbitrary codec app should not be treated as a way to add unsupported hardware capability.

Troubleshoot missing, greyed-out, or reverting options
- Developer options is missing: Confirm that you tapped Build number seven times, completed any PIN or pattern prompt, and returned to Settings. Search Settings for “Developer options”; the menu location and name can vary by manufacturer.
- A codec is missing or greyed out: Check which audio device is connected and whether both it and the phone support the codec. Available controls also depend on the Android build and installed codec implementation.
- A selection changes back: Connected devices may negotiate a configuration they both support, and vendor software can affect how the menu behaves. Persistence is device-dependent, so do not assume every phone applies or retains a manual choice in the same way.
- Audio becomes unstable: Return the codec or quality mode to its default, or choose a connection-priority option where available. LDAC’s documented modes explicitly trade audio quality against connection quality.
