To search the text of past Cursor conversations, open the Agents Window, open the command palette, and choose conversation search. Cursor’s current help page lists Cmd+Ctrl+K on Mac and Ctrl+K on Windows or Linux; the exact shortcut differs in another official Cursor source, so use the command palette if the listed keys do not work. Search is scoped to This Computer, Cloud, or a particular remote machine—not documented as one search across every environment.
Search past Cursor conversations
- Open the Cursor window or environment where you expect the conversation, then open the Agents Window.
- Open the command palette and select conversation search. Cursor’s Conversation Search help page lists Cmd+Ctrl+K on Mac and Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux. If those keys do not open search in your installed version, find the command through the palette. Cursor’s Conversation Search help documents the feature.
- Enter a distinctive phrase from the prompt, response, error message, or code symbol. Cursor says it builds a local index that scales to thousands of conversations; that is a capacity description, not a published benchmark or a guarantee that every older transcript is indexed.
- Check the selected environment if the conversation does not appear. Search is scoped to This Computer, Cloud, or a specific remote machine.
Cursor’s July 10, 2026 changelog describes transcript search from the Agents Window and identifies those separate scopes. It gives the shortcut as Cmd+K, which differs from the current help page’s shortcut. Use the command palette or the shortcut shown in your installed version rather than assuming the keys are identical across versions. Cursor’s changelog describes the entry point and environment scope.

Choose the right search scope
A conversation may be associated with your local computer, a Cloud environment, or a remote machine. Select the environment that held the chat before concluding it is missing. Cursor’s documentation does not promise a single query that searches all three scopes simultaneously.
- This Computer: Search conversations associated with your local environment.
- Cloud: Search the Cloud environment’s conversations.
- Remote machine: Select the particular remote machine where the conversation took place.
A community feature-request thread includes September 2026 staff replies saying a single global view across projects was still unavailable. That does not mean Cursor has no transcript search: the newer built-in search exists, but its documented scope is partitioned by environment. The Cursor community thread provides that project-view context.

Search within an open conversation
When you already have the right chat open and want to find a phrase in that transcript, use Cmd+Ctrl+F on Mac or Ctrl+F on Windows and Linux. Cursor’s History documentation describes navigating matches with the match counter. This is different from Agents Window conversation search, which searches the collection of past transcripts. Cursor’s History documentation lists the within-chat find shortcuts.
Find or resume a session with Cursor CLI
If your goal is to reopen a CLI session from another directory rather than search transcript text, Cursor’s release notes document a separate route: agent ls, agent --resume, or /resume show chats across workspaces by default. Choose This workspace to narrow the list; chats from other directories have a folder label. This is session listing and resumption, not Agents Window transcript-text search. Cursor’s CLI release notes describe these options.

What to check when a conversation is missing
- Confirm that conversation search—not within-chat find—is open.
- Switch among This Computer, Cloud, and the relevant remote machine.
- Try a distinctive phrase rather than a broad topic. Cursor documents transcript search but does not specify ranking behavior or guarantee indexing of every legacy transcript.
- If you need to reopen a CLI chat, use the CLI list or resume flow and inspect its directory label.
Older Cursor History documentation described standard chats as local SQLite history and background agent chats as remote, accessed with Ctrl+E, and mentioned Markdown export. That page is older than the current search feature; treat those storage details and the shortcut as version-sensitive, not as a complete map of today’s chat history. The History page is the source for that older description.
Workspace structure is not the same as history-search scope
Cursor supports multi-root workspaces, where Agent can access context from each folder. However, Cloud Agents do not support multi-root workspaces, and some features that depend on one Git root—such as worktrees—are disabled in multi-root configurations. This workspace support does not establish that chat-history search spans every folder or environment. Cursor’s Search documentation explains the multi-root and Cloud Agent limitations.
