For heels you expect to wear for hours, start with a lower, stable heel and a toe box that lets your toes rest naturally. Try the shoes on later in the day, walk in them, and reject any pair that pinches, rubs, or slips at the heel. A shoe should feel comfortable from the start; “breaking it in” is not a reliable fix for a poor fit.
No heel height or style guarantees all-day comfort for everyone. The best choice depends on your feet, the shoe’s shape and fit, and how much you expect to walk or stand.

Start with heel height and stability
Heel height affects how much pressure is placed on the ball of the foot. Lower heels are generally a more practical starting point for extended wear, but guidance differs on a specific height limit. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) describes an ideal shoe as having a heel lower than 2 inches. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust advises keeping heels under 4 cm (about 1.5 inches). These are recommendations from different organizations, not a universal medical safety cutoff.

Heel shape matters as well as height. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust describes a wider heel as more stable. When comparing shoes, check that the heel feels steady as you walk rather than forcing you to balance or change your stride.

If you prefer a higher heel
AAOS says a platform under the toe box can decrease overall stress on the foot when wearing a higher heel. That general advice does not establish that every platform design will be comfortable: fit, stability, and toe room still matter. If a platform shoe feels unstable or uncomfortable during your try-on, do not assume the platform will make it suitable for a long day.
Choose a toe box that gives your toes room
A shoe’s front shape can crowd the toes or leave them space to rest more naturally. AAOS and FootCareMD recommend looking for a square or wide toe box that follows the shape of your toes. A narrow, pointed toe can compress them and add pressure to the forefoot, especially when the foot is pushed forward by a heel.

Judge the shape while wearing the shoe, not just by looking at it. Stand and walk in the pair, and notice whether your toes feel squeezed or pressed together. A shoe that is wide at the opening but tapers sharply toward the toe may still leave too little room where it counts.

Try shoes on when your feet are larger
Feet can change size over the course of the day. AAOS says they may swell by up to 8% during the day and recommends buying shoes toward the end of the day. The figure is an AAOS general statement; it is not a promise that every person’s feet swell by that amount.

Try the heels on at a time when your feet are likely to be closer to their larger everyday size. Wear the socks or hosiery you expect to use with them, since a different layer can change how the shoe fits. Check both feet, as they may not feel exactly alike in the same pair.
Walk in the shoes before deciding
A standing fit check alone can miss problems that appear with movement. Walk around in the shoes and pay attention to how your foot sits and moves inside them. The Australian Podiatry Association says shoes should be immediately comfortable, and Harvard Health Publishing also advises assessing shoes by trying them on and walking.

- Heel slip: Pay attention to whether your heel lifts or slides as you step.

If the shoes feel wrong during this check, choose a different size or shape rather than counting on wear to solve the problem. An initially uncomfortable shoe is not a dependable choice for a day of walking or standing.

A well-padded sole can be one useful feature when comparing shoes; the Australian Podiatry Association includes padding in its footwear advice. Inserts or orthoses may also be relevant for some wearers, and NHS guidance discusses shoe inserts. But cushioning is secondary to fit: an insert cannot be relied on to make a shoe that pinches, slips, or otherwise fits poorly suitable for all-day wear.

If you are considering an insert or forefoot pad, assess the shoe with it in place. Added material can change how much room is available inside the shoe, so the original fit may no longer represent how the pair will feel when worn.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match the shoes to the length of the day
How long you will wear the shoes should influence what you choose. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust advises wearing sensible shoes for more than three-quarters of everyday walking or standing and saving fashion shoes for special occasions. Apply that distinction to your plans: a pair intended for a long day on your feet needs to feel workable during a realistic walk, not just look suitable for a short event.
FootCareMD advises limiting time in high heels because longer wear increases pressure on foot bones and the risk of pain or stress fracture. This supports limiting prolonged high-heel wear when possible; it does not establish a particular number of hours that is comfortable or appropriate for everyone.
A practical try-on checklist
- Try them on later in the day. Choose a time when your feet are likely to be larger, following AAOS guidance.
- Wear your usual socks or hosiery. Match the conditions you expect when wearing the shoes.
- Check heel height and shape. Compare lower heels first, and assess whether the heel feels stable as you move.
- Check toe room. Look for a wide or square shape that gives your toes space rather than forcing them into a point.
- Walk around. Check for pressure, pinching, rubbing, heel slip, and instability.
- Decide based on the fit you have. Do not buy an uncomfortable pair on the expectation that breaking it in will fix the problem.
- Consider cushioning only if the fit remains suitable. Assess the shoe with any insert you plan to use, and do not treat it as a substitute for adequate room and a secure fit.
- Consider how long you will be on your feet. Favor sensible footwear for most everyday walking and standing, and reserve fashion heels for occasions where prolonged wear is less likely.
What comfort guidance can—and cannot—tell you
The recommendations from AAOS, FootCareMD, the Australian Podiatry Association, Harvard Health Publishing, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust support practical selection criteria: reduce heel height where possible, allow toe room, check stability, and choose shoes that feel comfortable when tried on. They do not establish one design that will work for every wearer, rank particular heel models, or guarantee that a shoe will remain comfortable for an entire day.
Use the try-on as a real fit check rather than a search for a promised all-day solution. A shoe that feels comfortable, stays secure, and gives your toes room is a more sensible candidate for extended wear than one that depends on an insert or a future break-in period to feel right.
