Apple gives “volume” as an example and says Settings search can locate controls such as passcodes and notification sounds. If you do not know the right term, browse the main categories; if the option is missing, check your iPhone model, iOS version, language and region before assuming anything is wrong.
Start with Settings search
Settings search is designed for finding controls, not general information. Open the Settings app and use the search field at the top. Type the feature, setting or a closely related word, then select the result that leads to the control you need. Apple’s iPhone guide describes this use directly: “In the Settings app, you can search for iPhone settings you want to change, such as your passcode, notification sounds, and more.” Apple’s Find settings on iPhone guide uses “volume” as an example search term.

A reliable search sequence
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field.
- Enter the feature name, the setting you expect to change, or a related word. For example, search for
volumewhen you need volume-related controls. - Read the result labels rather than opening the first result automatically. Choose the result whose description matches the change you want to make.
- Tap the result to open its settings page, then change the control there.
Searching is especially useful when you know the outcome but not Apple’s exact label. A feature may be described by the action you want to perform rather than by the name you use in conversation. Try a short synonym if the first query produces no useful result. For example, search for the object or action associated with the control instead of a long sentence.
What to do when a search returns several results
- Prefer the result that names the system category you expect, such as Sounds & Haptics for sound-related controls.
- Open a result and check the heading and nearby options before changing anything.
- If the result concerns an app, confirm that you are changing the app’s permission or notification behavior rather than a system-wide control.
- When a term does not work, shorten it or try a synonym. Search labels can differ from the words people use to describe a feature.
Browse Settings by category when you do not know the term
If search does not identify the control, browse the major sections of Settings. Apple lists common landmarks including General, Accessibility, Display & Brightness, Notifications, Sounds & Haptics, Face ID or Touch ID & Passcode, Privacy & Security, and Apps. These are navigation landmarks, not a fixed table of contents: Apple notes that the sections shown can vary by iPhone model. The category list and the exact labels you see therefore may not match another person’s iPhone.

Use the likely category as a map
- General: Start here for broad device-management options when the setting does not clearly belong to display, sound, privacy or another specialist area.
- Accessibility: Look here for features intended to change how you see, hear or interact with the iPhone.
- Display & Brightness: Use this landmark for screen appearance and brightness-related controls.
- Notifications: Check this section when the problem involves alerts or notification behavior.
- Sounds & Haptics: This is the natural starting point for sound and vibration controls.
- Face ID or Touch ID & Passcode: Use the security section associated with the authentication hardware on your iPhone.
- Privacy & Security: Review permissions and privacy-related controls here.
- Apps: Look for controls associated with installed apps when the option is app-specific.
When you browse, open one category at a time and scan its headings before changing a setting. If none of the likely landmarks contains the option, return to search and try a related term. The category names are useful signposts, but they cannot guarantee that every iPhone displays the same arrangement.
Settings search and Spotlight are different tools
Both Settings search and Spotlight help you find things on an iPhone, but they answer different questions. Use Settings search when you need a system control. Use Spotlight when you want to search more broadly for apps, contacts, supported app content and other results. Apple explains Spotlight in its Search with Spotlight on iPhone guide.
| Method | Best use | Where it searches | How to open it | What can affect results |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Settings search | Finding an iPhone control to change | Settings options and control pages | Open Settings and tap its search field | Search wording, iPhone model and installed software |
| Spotlight | Finding apps, contacts and supported app content | Broader iPhone content | Open it from the Home Screen or Lock Screen | Spotlight search and app-inclusion controls under Settings > Search |
Control which apps Spotlight includes
Spotlight has its own inclusion controls. Apple places those controls under Settings > Search. This path affects what Spotlight can return; it is separate from using the search field inside Settings to locate a system option. If an app or its content does not appear in Spotlight, review that app’s inclusion setting under Settings > Search rather than looking for a missing system control.

Find and manage app permissions in Privacy & Security
Privacy permissions are grouped under Settings > Privacy & Security. Apple identifies categories including Location, Contacts, Photos, Microphone and Camera in its About privacy and Location Services information.
Review a permission by category
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Choose the access category you want to inspect, such as Location, Contacts, Photos, Microphone or Camera.
- Review the apps listed for that category.
- Grant or revoke future access using the controls shown for each app.
This category-first approach is useful when you remember what information or hardware an app requested but not the app’s own settings label. For example, to check which apps can use the microphone, start with Privacy & Security and then open Microphone, rather than searching through each app individually.
Permission changes are prospective
The Privacy & Security controls let you review access and grant or revoke future access. They are the place to manage whether apps can continue requesting or using the selected category according to the options shown on your iPhone. If you are checking a privacy concern, inspect each relevant category instead of assuming that changing one permission changes the others.

Locate Apple Intelligence controls when they are available
On supported configurations, Apple places Apple Intelligence controls at Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. Apple’s Use Apple Intelligence on your iPhone guide also states that availability is limited by device, language and region.
Check the path first
- Open Settings.
- Look for Apple Intelligence & Siri, or search Settings for
Apple IntelligenceorSiri. - Open the matching page to review the controls available on your device.
If the section does not appear, do not treat that absence as proof that Settings is malfunctioning. Confirm the installed iOS version, your iPhone model, the selected language and your region against Apple’s stated availability requirements. A feature can be correctly installed yet unavailable when one of those eligibility conditions is not met.

Missing options usually require a navigation or eligibility check rather than random changes elsewhere in Settings. Work through these checks in order.

1. Search with a related word
Use a shorter query or a synonym for the control. Search for the thing being changed—such as sound, display, camera or location—instead of relying only on a feature name you may have heard elsewhere.
2. Browse the nearest category
Use the category landmarks to inspect the area most likely to contain the control. Remember that category sections can vary by iPhone model, so another person’s menu order is not a definitive map for your device.

3. Confirm that you are using the correct search
Settings search finds controls inside Settings. Spotlight searches more broadly and has its own app-inclusion settings under Settings > Search. If you opened Spotlight while looking for a control, return to Settings and use the Settings search field instead.
Best Value
4. Check software and device eligibility
Some paths and features depend on software and eligibility. For Apple Intelligence, specifically check the iOS version, iPhone model, language and region because Apple lists all four as availability factors. More generally, menu labels and available features can change with the installed software and hardware.
5. Check whether the option is app-specific
An app permission or notification control may be found under the relevant privacy category or app area rather than in a general system section. For permissions, start at Settings > Privacy & Security; for Spotlight inclusion, use Settings > Search.
A practical decision guide
Choose the route that matches what you know about the setting:
- You know the feature or a related term: Use Settings search first.
- You know the kind of control but not its name: Browse the closest category, such as Sounds & Haptics for sound or Privacy & Security for permissions.
- You want an app, contact or searchable content: Use Spotlight, not the Settings search field.
- You need to review access to device data or hardware: Open Settings > Privacy & Security and choose the relevant category.
- You cannot see a feature at all: Try a synonym, inspect the relevant category, then verify model, iOS version, language and region where those requirements apply.
Use settings safely once you find the page
Finding a result is only half the task. Before changing a control, read the page heading and the labels around the switch, menu or permission list. This prevents a similarly named option from being changed by mistake. For privacy categories, review the app list before granting or revoking access. For search-related settings, distinguish the system control you want from Spotlight’s separate inclusion controls.
When you need to find the same option later, note the category path shown by the page. A path such as Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone is more dependable than remembering the position of an icon or relying on another iPhone’s menu order, because Apple says the sections displayed can vary by model.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Use the search field inside Settings for the quickest route to an iPhone control.
- Browse category landmarks when you do not know the exact wording.
- Use Spotlight for apps, contacts and supported content, not as a replacement for Settings search.
- Manage location, contacts, photos, microphone and camera access from Settings > Privacy & Security.
- For Apple Intelligence, look under Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and verify device, iOS, language and region eligibility.
- If an option is absent, try a synonym and then check model, software version, language and regional availability.
