How to Find and Use Google Maps Features You Might Have Missed

Explore the Google Maps tabs and profile menu to find useful tools, from shared lists and pedestrian Lens to offline maps and privacy settings.

Start with the three bottom tabs—Explore, You and Contribute—and the profile icon or initial. Explore helps you discover places and activities; You collects saved places, lists and trip-related content; Contribute is for reviews, photos and suggested corrections. Offline maps, Timeline, Location sharing and Settings are usually under your profile menu, though labels and placement can vary between Android, iPhone and app versions.

Where to look for Google Maps features

Google’s Google Maps app overview describes three main tabs and the profile menu. If a tool is not visible in the bottom navigation, tap your profile image or initial and check there.

  • Explore: discover nearby places and activities.
  • You: find saved places, lists, trips and other personal content.
  • Contribute: add reviews and photos or suggest corrections.
  • Profile menu: look for Location sharing, Timeline, Offline maps and Settings.

Google changes app layouts over time, and exact labels can differ by platform, version or rollout. Treat these as likely locations rather than a guarantee that every account will show the same menu.

Organize plans with a saved places list

A list can keep trip stops, errands or recommendations together instead of scattering them across saved places. Google’s list-sharing instructions describe lists that can be private or shared so anyone with the link can view them. The list owner can also invite collaborators to edit.

  1. Save places to a list for the plan you want to organize.
  2. Choose the list’s visibility: keep it private, or share it by link for viewing.
  3. If others should add or change places, invite them as collaborators rather than assuming a view link gives editing access.

The cited walkthrough is for desktop; mobile controls and wording may differ. Check the visibility and collaboration settings before sending a list, especially if it contains places you do not intend to share.

Use Lens in Maps for walking orientation

Lens in Maps overlays directions on a camera view to help pedestrians orient themselves toward a destination or nearby landmark. Google’s Lens in Maps instructions say it depends on a compatible ARKit or ARCore device, Street View coverage for the area, and availability in a supported country. The feature is intended for the walking portions of a trip, not for use in a moving vehicle.

Google Maps Help advises: “Use Lens-assisted walking navigation only when necessary, like when you start your journey, reach a turn, or you’re about to arrive at your destination.” Use the camera view briefly to orient yourself, then put the phone away once you know the next turn. If the option is missing, the device, location coverage or country availability may not meet the requirements.

Understand offline maps, especially in a car

Offline maps can be useful before travel or when connectivity is poor, but what works offline depends on the Maps version and device. Google’s guidance for Google Maps built into a car says offline maps support navigation and safety-related driver assistance. If you choose manual downloads, you are responsible for downloading and updating the area.

In-car availability and behavior can depend on the vehicle manufacturer, region, language and data plan. Do not assume a particular driver-assistance or safety function will work without the right map data downloaded. The car-specific guidance does not establish that phone and built-in-car Maps behave identically offline.

If you cannot find offline map downloads, check which app you have. Google Maps Go does not support downloading map areas or offline navigation, according to Google Maps Go’s feature information.

Try Immersive View on supported Android XR devices

Immersive View is a device-specific option, not a universal phone feature. Google’s Android XR Immersive View guide describes exploring cities and landmarks in 3D, opening select indoor views, entering Street View and inspecting points of interest. Look for it only if you are using a supported Android XR device; its presence should not be expected in the standard Maps app on every phone.

Review privacy settings for Maps AI features

Some AI-powered Maps features may use location data to provide relevant answers, and account information may personalize responses. Google identifies Ask Maps, Lens in Maps and Gemini in Navigation as features that may store location-related information in its privacy information for Maps AI features.

Google says these privacy settings are changing gradually. Review the account settings currently shown in your app rather than relying on a fixed menu path or assuming every account has the same controls.

If a feature is missing

  • Check the profile menu as well as the three bottom tabs.
  • Confirm which Maps app variant you use; Maps Go has fewer features, including no offline downloads or navigation and no real-time location sharing.
  • For Lens, consider device compatibility, country availability and Street View coverage where you are walking.
  • For in-car offline functions, account for vehicle, region, language, data-plan and downloaded-map dependencies.
  • Remember that Google can change labels and availability as app layouts and privacy settings roll out.
