How to Find and Update Drivers That Are Incompatible with Memory Integrity

A practical Windows 10 and 11 guide to identifying Memory integrity-incompatible drivers, finding legitimate updates, troubleshooting blocked-driver events, and choosing what to do when no compatible version exists.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows says a driver is incompatible with Memory integrity, start with Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details. Write down the driver and company names shown there, check Windows Update for a compatible package, then use the device manufacturer’s or application publisher’s official support channel. If no compatible version exists, remove the device or app if practical. Turning Memory integrity off is a last-resort trade-off, not a routine driver fix.

What the warning means

Memory integrity—also called Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI)—is a Windows security feature that uses hardware virtualization to make it harder for malicious software to abuse low-level drivers. The feature requires virtualization to be enabled in your computer’s UEFI or BIOS. Microsoft documents the feature and its driver guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in Device Security in the Windows Security App.

A driver is the software layer that lets Windows communicate with a device or with software that needs low-level access. Older, incorrectly signed, or otherwise incompatible drivers may prevent Memory integrity from being enabled, or may be blocked when Windows tries to load them. The warning normally identifies the driver and its company. Those two names are the most useful starting information; this general procedure cannot identify a particular package without seeing your own notification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a driver with the newest-looking date is the right one. Microsoft explains that a displayed driver date is descriptive information chosen by the provider, while Windows Update uses provider targeting information to select a package. Date alone is not a reliable ranking of compatibility or freshness.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

Identify the exact incompatible driver

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu or the taskbar notification area.
  2. Select Device security.
  3. Open Core isolation details.
  4. Read the Memory integrity section. If Windows has identified a conflict, it will show the incompatible driver name. Record the driver name and the company name exactly as displayed.

Keep that information with your Windows edition and version, the computer or device model, and the application you suspect installed the driver. A driver can belong to a peripheral, an internal component, or an application rather than to the hardware you immediately associate with the warning. The company name can therefore be as important as the filename when you search for support.

If the screen lists more than one driver, record every entry before updating anything. Resolve them one at a time, restarting when Windows requests it, so you can tell which change affected the warning. Avoid downloading a package merely because its filename resembles the one shown by Windows; match the device model and Windows version through an official support page.

Check Windows Update first

Windows Update is the safest first source because it can match a driver to the device and the installed Windows build. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Install any offered driver update that corresponds to the affected device, then restart if Windows requests one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11 also exposes optional driver packages at Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates. The availability of that list depends on the computer, the installed Windows version, and what Microsoft and the provider have published. Review the device or provider name before installing an optional package; do not select every entry indiscriminately.

Microsoft’s Understanding driver updates article was published on October 20, 2025 and describes Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 and Windows Server 2025. Its explanation of provider targeting is useful, but those version labels should not be treated as a promise that the same screen or package exists on every Windows release.

After Windows Update installs a package

  • Restart when prompted. Kernel-level driver changes may not be active until the restart completes.
  • Return to Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details.
  • Check whether the incompatible-driver entry has disappeared and whether Memory integrity can now be enabled.
  • If the warning remains, note whether the same driver name is listed or whether a different driver is now blocking the feature.

If Windows Update offers no compatible driver, continue to the vendor’s official support channel rather than using an unattributed driver-download site.

Find the responsible manufacturer or software publisher

Use the company name shown in Windows Security to locate the support page for the device manufacturer. Search the manufacturer’s own site for the exact model and your Windows version, then look for a driver that explicitly supports Memory integrity or HVCI. If the driver came with an application, contact that application’s publisher as well; the hardware maker may not distribute software-specific drivers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s guidance is direct: “Check with the manufacturer of the device to see if they have an updated driver available.” The same support page explains Memory integrity and the incompatible-driver workflow: Device Security in the Windows Security App.

Microsoft’s blocked-driver instructions likewise say to see whether an updated and compatible driver is available through Windows Update or from the driver manufacturer. Read the full procedure at A driver can’t load on this device.

What to ask the vendor

  • Is there a driver for the exact device model and installed Windows version?
  • Is the package compatible with Memory integrity (HVCI)?
  • Where relevant, is it WHCP-certified?
  • Does installing it require removing an older package, disconnecting the device, or restarting?
  • If no package is listed, is a fix planned, and is there a supported temporary workaround?

Download only from the manufacturer’s or publisher’s official support source. A third-party site may offer a file with a newer date but cannot establish that it belongs to your model, is authentic, or is compatible with your Windows security configuration.

Install and verify a manufacturer update safely

  1. Confirm the model and Windows version on the vendor’s support page. Do not substitute a driver for a similar-looking model.
  2. Read the vendor’s release notes for compatibility, prerequisites, and restart requirements.
  3. Download the package from the official page and retain the installer until the result is verified.
  4. Close applications that use the affected device, then run the installer according to the vendor’s instructions.
  5. Restart Windows if requested, even if the installer appears to have finished successfully.
  6. Open Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details and check the Memory integrity status again.

A successful installation is not proved by the package’s date or by the installer’s completion message alone. The relevant result is that Windows no longer reports the driver as incompatible and that the device or application still performs its required function.

If no compatible driver is available

When neither Windows Update nor the responsible vendor offers a compatible package, Microsoft says you may need to remove the device or application that uses the driver. This is a compatibility decision, not merely a cleanup step: removing the software can remove a feature, and removing a physical device can make that hardware unavailable.

Remove an application-dependent driver

If the driver arrived with an application, determine whether you still need that application. If it is nonessential, uninstalling the application through Windows’ installed-app controls may also remove its driver. Follow the publisher’s removal instructions when the software includes a separate driver component, and restart before checking Core isolation again.

Remove or postpone a device

For a device that has not yet been installed, wait until a compatible driver is available. For an installed device, remove it only after confirming what function depends on it and whether another device can provide that function. Microsoft’s recommendation is especially relevant to optional peripherals whose incompatible driver prevents a stronger security configuration.

Ask for a supported plan

Tell the manufacturer or application publisher the exact driver name, company, device or software model, and Windows version shown on your system. Ask whether a compatible update is planned. Keep the unsupported driver disabled or the device disconnected if the vendor’s instructions require that while you wait; do not install an unrelated package as a substitute.

Should you turn off Memory integrity?

Microsoft lists disabling Memory integrity as an option when a blocked driver is required, but recommends looking for a compatible update first. Disabling the feature reduces the protection it provides against low-level code, so it should be a conscious exception for a necessary device or application, not the default answer to an update problem.

On a Secured-core PC, Microsoft warns that turning Memory integrity off takes the computer out of its Secured-core state. Windows also requires a restart for the setting change to take effect. Read the warning on your own system before confirming it and consider whether the driver’s function justifies the security trade-off.

Decision checklist

  • Keep Memory integrity enabled: choose this when the device or application is optional, can be removed, or has a compatible update.
  • Temporarily disable it: consider this only when the driver is necessary, no compatible package exists, and you accept the reduced protection and restart.
  • Do not proceed with the device: if it has not been installed and the vendor has no compatible driver, wait rather than weakening the security setting for it.

Microsoft’s blocked-driver page documents the warning and the Secured-core consequence: A driver can’t load on this device. Re-enable Memory integrity after replacing or removing the incompatible driver, then restart and verify the status.

Use Event Viewer for a blocked-driver notification

The Core isolation page is the primary diagnostic for a Memory integrity incompatibility. If your symptom is instead a notification that Windows blocked a driver and you need the event details, Microsoft’s Windows Driver Policy instructions specify this Event Viewer path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Event Viewer.
  2. Expand Applications and Services Logs.
  3. Expand Microsoft, then Windows.
  4. Select CodeIntegrity > Operational.
  5. Look for the relevant event and open its details.

Under the Windows Driver Policy described by Microsoft, Event ID 3077 means a driver was blocked under enforcement. The event details include the driver name and the process that tried to load it. Read the policy guidance at The Windows Driver Policy.

Do not treat Event ID 3077 as a universal code for every Memory integrity warning. The Windows Driver Policy article describes events generated by that policy; a Memory integrity warning may be identified only by the name shown on the Core isolation screen. Use Event Viewer to add context, not to replace the first diagnostic.

Compare the four practical choices

Choice When it fits Checks before proceeding
Windows Update driver First update attempt; Windows may already offer a compatible package. Look in Windows Update and, on Windows 11, Optional updates > Driver updates. Confirm the device or provider.
Manufacturer or app-publisher driver Windows Update has no compatible package. Match the exact model and Windows version; use the official support source; confirm Memory integrity or HVCI compatibility and WHCP certification where relevant.
Remove the device or app No compatible driver exists and the function is not essential. Identify what depends on it and whether removing it is acceptable. Do not install an unapproved replacement.
Disable Memory integrity The driver’s function is necessary and you accept the security trade-off. Check whether the PC is Secured-core; understand that disabling the feature removes that state and requires a restart.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by displayed driver date

A provider-selected date does not establish that a package is newer in the way Windows evaluates it, nor that it is compatible with your hardware. Use Windows Update targeting or the vendor’s exact model page instead.

Using a generic download site

An unattributed package can be incorrect, unsigned, modified, or intended for a different model. Microsoft recommends obtaining signed drivers from official vendors in its Windows Driver Policy guidance.

Confusing a blocked-driver event with every HVCI warning

Event ID 3077 belongs to the enforcement events documented for Windows Driver Policy. Start with the driver name in Core isolation for a Memory integrity warning, then use Event Viewer only when you need additional event context.

Disabling the feature before checking for updates

Turning Memory integrity off can remove a Secured-core PC from its Secured-core state. Check Windows Update and the responsible vendor first, and remove an unnecessary device or app instead of weakening protection.

Updating without recording the original entry

If several drivers are listed, record each name and company before making changes. That record lets you match a vendor package and determine whether the update removed the original conflict.

A concise recovery sequence

  1. Record every driver and company named under Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details.
  2. Check Settings > Windows Update; on Windows 11 also inspect Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates.
  3. Restart and recheck Core isolation after an offered driver installs.
  4. If no update is offered, use the device manufacturer’s official support page or contact the application publisher.
  5. Install only a package matched to the exact model and Windows version, then restart and verify.
  6. If no compatible version exists, remove the nonessential device or app, or postpone installation of an uninstalled device.
  7. Only if the driver is essential, evaluate disabling Memory integrity with full awareness of the security and Secured-core consequences.

Windows versions, interface labels, available packages, and policy behavior can change. When a screen differs from these paths, use the current labels shown in Windows Security and Windows Update, and rely on the responsible vendor’s current support documentation for model-specific instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Windows show a driver company name as well as a filename?

The company name helps identify which device manufacturer or application publisher supplied the driver. Record both names from Core isolation before searching for an update, because the hardware maker and the software publisher may provide different support paths.

Is Event ID 3077 proof that Memory integrity is the problem?

No. Microsoft documents Event ID 3077 as a driver blocked under Windows Driver Policy enforcement. For a Memory integrity incompatibility, the first diagnostic is the driver name shown at Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details.

What should I do if the vendor has no driver update?

Ask whether a Memory integrity-compatible or WHCP-certified version is planned. If none exists, remove the device or application if it is not essential, or wait before installing an uninstalled device. Disable Memory integrity only if the function is necessary and you accept the reduced protection.
