To tame a wild creature in Fallout 76, equip Animal Friend at rank 3, then search random encounter locations for a suitable creature that is alone. Use the in-game Tame prompt to send it to your C.A.M.P., and stay logged in while it makes the trip. Bethesda says the animal will guard your camp, but it cannot be respawned if it is lost.
What taming does—and which pet system this guide covers
This is the legacy Animal Friend mechanic: a wild creature you tame walks to your C.A.M.P. and protects it, according to Bethesda Support. It is different from later pet features. In October 2024, Bethesda described C.A.M.P. Pets as cats or dogs that stay around the camp rather than following you through the world. Bethesda’s September 18, 2026 article describes World Pets as a feature being tested on the Public Test Server (PTS), where owned pets can be summoned as travel companions. That PTS description is not confirmation that the feature or every described behavior is live in the main game.

Bethesda summed up the 2024 C.A.M.P. Pets distinction this way: “C.A.M.P. Pets will not follow you in the world – they are just that – a C.A.M.P. pet!” Bethesda’s October 2024 announcement covers that feature; its September 2026 PTS article covers World Pets. Neither description says the legacy Animal Friend taming mechanic has been removed or replaced.
What you need before searching
- Animal Friend, rank 3: Bethesda Support says rank 3 gives a chance to tame an animal and send it to your C.A.M.P.
- 3 Charisma: Bethesda’s support information states this requirement alongside the perk requirement.
- The perk equipped before the search: A community guide updated in June 2025 recommends equipping Animal Friend before approaching a random encounter area. Treat this as practical community guidance, not a separately confirmed official rule.
- A camp you can protect: Only one tamed animal can guard a C.A.M.P. at a time, and Bethesda says a tamed animal cannot be respawned.
Bethesda’s requirements and limits are listed on its Animal Friend support page. That page is in French and has no visible update date; the English wording above conveys its stated requirements without relying on its localized creature names.

Where to find a tameable pet
Search random encounter locations rather than expecting a creature at a fixed spawn. Each stop can produce one of many random scenes, and a tameable animal is only one possible outcome. A community location update dated April 28, 2026 warns that changes to the game map made older encounter maps obsolete. Use a currently maintained, numbered map as a set of places to check—not as a promise that a pet will appear at any particular stop. When you reach an encounter, look for an eligible creature by itself. The June 2025 community guide says the creature must be alone for the Tame option to appear. If the encounter contains no suitable animal, or it is accompanied by other enemies, move on or clear the scene and keep searching.
How to tame an animal and send it to camp
- Equip Animal Friend at rank 3 and confirm that you meet the 3 Charisma requirement stated by Bethesda.
- Visit random encounter locations using a current community map as a search aid. Expect to check multiple locations; none guarantees a tameable spawn.
- Find a suitable creature alone. Community guidance says the Tame prompt requires the creature to be by itself.
- Approach until the Tame prompt appears, then select it and confirm that you want to send the creature to your C.A.M.P. If you see only Pacify, the community guide advises getting closer. It also reports that an unscoped weapon may let the prompt appear from farther away, but that is a tip, not a guaranteed mechanic.
- Stay logged in while it travels. Bethesda says the creature walks to your C.A.M.P. and warns that disconnecting before it arrives can make it disappear.
Community advice recommends letting the animal make the journey without an escort, since following it may draw hostile attention. Bethesda’s warning about disconnecting before arrival is on its support page; the practical travel suggestions come from the community guide.
Which creatures can you tame?
The following are community-reported examples grouped by Animal Friend rank in the June 2025 guide. This is not an exhaustive roster confirmed by Bethesda, and a creature’s presence at a random encounter is not guaranteed.

Creature eligibility and encounter availability are different questions: a creature listed by the community guide still has to appear in a suitable encounter for you to tame it. Bethesda’s support page also describes some creature categories as no longer considered animals for Animal Friend pacification; because the retrieved page is in French and localized names may not map cleanly to English, this guide does not treat its named exclusions as an English-language definitive list.

The journey is part of the risk. Bethesda says to remain logged in until the creature reaches camp, and community guidance recommends not escorting it because doing so may attract hostile attention. After arrival, the C.A.M.P. itself can expose the animal to enemies or other players. The June 2025 community guide suggests keeping the C.A.M.P. module near ground level and leaving room for the creature to patrol; these are player tips rather than official guarantees of safety.

Plan carefully before starting the search: Bethesda says only one tamed animal can guard a camp at once and that a tamed animal cannot be respawned. If you rely on a pet surviving, consider whether your camp location and layout leave it vulnerable.

Why the Tame prompt may not appear
- You see Pacify, not Tame: The community guide suggests moving closer. Its unscoped-weapon distance tip is not guaranteed.
- The creature is with other enemies: Community guidance says the target must be alone. Clear the scene if appropriate, or continue to another encounter.
- You found no eligible animal: Random encounter stops do not guarantee a tameable creature. Try other locations on a currently maintained map.
- Your perk or Charisma does not meet the stated requirement: Bethesda specifies Animal Friend rank 3 and 3 Charisma for the chance to tame and send an animal to camp.
