Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

To find what is using memory on yours, open Task Manager, sort running processes by Memory, and check whether the apps near the top are ones you recognize and need. Then choose the right fix: close an app for now, disable its automatic startup, limit its background activity, or uninstall it.
Why is your Windows 11 PC using so much RAM?
Apps that are open, start automatically, or continue working in the background can contribute to memory use. Which ones matter depends on what is running on your PC, so an installed-apps list is not proof that an app is currently consuming significant RAM. Microsoft recommends checking resource use in Task Manager rather than relying on a fixed list of supposed culprits. Microsoft’s PC performance guidance explains how to monitor processes and startup apps.

A high memory percentage alone is not a diagnosis. Windows can use memory for caching and make it available when applications need it, according to secondary reporting from Windows Central. Consider whether the PC is actually slowing down and what you were doing when you checked, alongside Task Manager’s readings.

How to find what is using memory right now
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes, then select the Memory column to sort by memory use.
- Inspect the apps and processes near the top. Close an app only if you recognize it and are not using it; closing it ends its current activity, but does not prevent it from launching at your next sign-in.
- Use Task Manager’s Performance tab to review overall memory use and its Startup apps tab to assess programs configured to launch when you sign in.
Do not disable Windows system services as a blanket cleanup measure. Focus on apps you recognize and manage them through Task Manager or Settings.

Which startup apps can you disable?
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable only programs you do not need to launch automatically at sign-in. This setting is separate from background permissions: disabling startup prevents automatic launch at sign-in, while a supported app’s background setting governs whether it can continue working when you are not actively using it. Microsoft’s startup-app guidance describes the controls and impact labels.
Task Manager’s startup impact labels describe startup resource use, not RAM saved by disabling an app:

- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 260-pin, PC Speed = PC4-25600, Voltage = 1.2V, Rank and Configuration = 1Rx8 or 2Rx8
- Low impact: total CPU use is under 300 milliseconds and total disk use is under 292 kilobytes.
- Medium impact: total CPU use is under one second but more than 300 milliseconds, or total disk use is under three megabytes but more than 292 kilobytes.
- High impact: total CPU use is over one second or total disk use is over three megabytes.
These are Microsoft’s criteria for startup impact; they are not estimates of memory freed or proof that an app should be disabled. Keep programs that you want ready at sign-in, and use the label as context rather than a verdict.

For supported apps, Windows 11 provides a separate background-activity permission. Background work can support notifications, data synchronization, and updates. Setting an app to Never stops it from running in the background while inactive, but you will also stop receiving that app’s notifications or updates. Microsoft documents the background-activity setting and its tradeoffs.

- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage.
- Choose the app’s More options > Manage background activity.
- Choose the permission that fits how you use the app. Select Never only if you are comfortable losing its background notifications and updates while it is inactive.
This control is available for supported apps; it is not a universal switch for every process on the PC.
When to uninstall an app instead
If you recognize an app and no longer need it, uninstalling removes the software rather than merely changing when or how it runs. Microsoft lists uninstalling unused apps as a way to free storage and reduce background activity. Its guidance does not establish a specific RAM saving for uninstalling any particular app.

To remove one, open Settings > Apps, find the app you no longer need, and use its uninstall option. Remove only software you recognize and are sure you do not need; do not treat every unfamiliar entry as disposable.

| Action | What it changes | Tradeoff | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close the app | Ends its current activity. | It may run again when you reopen it or when it starts automatically later. | You recognize the app and are not using it now. |
| Disable startup | Prevents automatic launch at sign-in. | You may need to open the app yourself when you want it. | You use the app, but do not need it ready as soon as you sign in. |
| Limit background activity | Stops a supported app from working in the background while inactive when set to Never. | You will not receive that app’s background notifications or updates. | You do not need its background sync, notifications, or updates. |
| Uninstall | Removes the app and can free storage and reduce background activity. | You will need to reinstall it if you want to use it again. | You recognize the app and no longer need it. |
The cited guidance does not quantify RAM savings for individual apps. Choose based on what Task Manager shows and whether you need the app’s startup or background functions—not on an assumed memory payoff.

How to tell whether the cleanup helped
After changing a setting, return to Task Manager and check memory use and whether the slowdown you noticed has improved. Compare under similar conditions—for example, with the same work open—because the apps and workload affect the reading. If the PC is responsive, a high memory percentage by itself does not prove that an app should be removed or that the computer needs more RAM.
If slowdowns persist, look at the processes and workload actually present rather than applying a generic cleanup list. A memory upgrade is a separate decision: whether one fits depends on the specific computer, and the evidence here does not establish that an upgrade is needed.
