Those are not interchangeable formats. Start by identifying the app and file type, then try Samsung Notes’ import feature; if a note opens, export a separate copy before changing or moving anything.
What counts as a Samsung Memo file?
Samsung has had multiple note apps and data formats. Samsung Notes says it can import notes and memos from previous versions of Memo or S Note, while newly created notes use the .sdocx extension. Samsung’s support guide separately describes importing older S Note files with the .spd extension. These facts do not mean that every legacy extension or backup package opens through the same route.

.spdas the old S Note format and documents an import route. - Older Memo app or a transfer backup: The name alone does not identify the format or establish how to restore it.
Before trying to open anything, note the original app, device model, Android or One UI version, full filename and extension, and how the data was backed up. A file called .memo is not necessarily equivalent to .nmm, .snb, .spd, .sdocx, or a Smart Switch backup.

How do I open an old Samsung Memo file?
Try Samsung Notes’ import feature first
- Open Samsung Notes.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Choose Import notes.
- Select an available source, such as a Samsung account, and follow the prompts.
This is Samsung’s documented general import route in its US support guide. The available sources and exact labels can vary with the app version and device. For older S Note data, Samsung Korea documents importing .spd files through Samsung Notes; check the current app and your model’s support information if the menu differs.

If the notes are in a backup
Do not assume a transfer backup is an ordinary note file or that it can be opened by changing its extension. Samsung’s instructions for restoring older memo data depend on the memo type, device model, backup service, and whether the original app is present. For example, Samsung’s guidance for the Galaxy Note8 and S8 series describes pathway-specific limitations for Samsung Cloud and Smart Switch. Those model-specific conditions are not a general restore guarantee.
Where are Samsung Notes files stored?
Samsung says Notes files are stored in internal storage, but that does not give users a universal folder path for every generation of Memo or Notes. Android storage access depends on the app’s storage and platform permissions; files managed privately by an app may not be visible or accessible like ordinary documents. The available documentation does not establish one hidden path that works across all devices and app versions.

Accordingly, searching folders or enabling a generic “show hidden files” setting may not reveal app-managed notes. Avoid rooting a device, editing an app database, or renaming an unknown backup as a ZIP archive based only on its filename. Those steps are not established as safe or effective for the formats discussed here.

Export notes that open into a portable copy
Samsung’s support instructions let you export an open note using its More options menu and Save as file. Available choices include PDF, Word, PowerPoint, image, and text; Samsung Korea’s instructions also list Samsung Notes format and let you select a destination folder.

- Open the note in Samsung Notes.
- Tap More options and choose Save as file.
- Choose the format that fits your purpose and select a destination folder.
- Keep the original note as well as the exported copy when possible.
Use a native Samsung Notes copy when you want to keep working in the app, and choose PDF for a document-style archive or text when readable words are the priority. The cited support material does not establish that every export preserves handwriting, audio, layers, or layout identically, so check the resulting file before relying on it as your only copy.
Keep a second copy without confusing sync and import
Samsung documents syncing Samsung Notes through Samsung Cloud, saving notes as files, and importing from sources such as Google Drive. These are separate workflows: synchronization keeps supported notes associated with the service, while importing brings notes into the app from a selected source. They should not be treated as interchangeable backups or proof that a particular legacy format is supported.

For a local archive, save exported files to an accessible folder and copy them to another location. A USB-C flash drive may be one destination, but compatibility depends on the device, port, and drive; it does not decode or repair an unsupported Memo file.
What a .memo extension does—and does not—tell you
FileInfo’s entry for one Samsung-related .memo format describes a ZIP-compressed archive containing an XML file and a Media folder, and says Samsung Notes can open it. FileInfo updated that description on March 26, 2021; it is a secondary source, not a Samsung format specification. It does not establish that all files called “Samsung Memo” have that structure, or that the same instructions apply to other extensions or backup containers.

Samsung’s documentation supports trying its import feature, but the available sources do not establish a universal conversion or extension-renaming recipe for .nmm, .snb, Smart Switch packages, or app-private databases. Treat the extension as a clue, not a guarantee.
Screen off memos are a separate case
On supported devices, Samsung’s Galaxy manual says: “When you tap Save after writing a memo, the memo will be saved to Samsung Notes.” This describes the Screen off memo feature on supported devices; it does not show that every older Memo file is stored in Samsung Notes or hidden in a particular folder.
