Choose moderators for reliability and judgment, not just familiarity with your channel. Before granting access, agree on your rules, tone, escalation process, and how moderators will coordinate. Then assign the narrowest suitable role and use platform filters or bots for repetitive work while keeping people responsible for context-sensitive decisions.
Decide what moderation your stream needs
There is no established universal moderator-to-viewer ratio or minimum team size. The right coverage depends on how quickly chat moves, how often you stream, and whether someone needs to be available for the full broadcast. Consider the demands of your actual schedule rather than copying another channel’s staffing level.

- For a slower chat or occasional stream, one trusted moderator may be enough for the periods when help is needed.

Assign and manage moderator access
Twitch and YouTube use different role names, settings, and permissions. Check each platform’s current role details before assigning access, and give people only the authority needed for the work.
Twitch
Twitch’s guidance describes a Moderator Management tab in Creator Dashboard for viewing moderators and lead moderators, adding people, and managing moderator actions. It also documents /mod username to add a moderator and /mods to view the assigned list. Interface labels and availability can change; consult Twitch’s moderation setup guidance and role documentation for the current workflow. Twitch distinguishes moderator access from roles with broader channel access, so do not grant a broader role merely for convenience.

YouTube offers standard and managing moderators; managing moderators have more permissions. You can assign moderators from the YouTube app while viewing live chat or through YouTube Studio’s community settings. Set controls to fit your channel rather than assuming a filter will make chat safe on its own. YouTube provides None, Basic, and Strict live-chat filtering. Held messages can remain hidden unless shown, and slow mode limits how often a user can send messages. Twitch supports channel controls alongside human moderators, AutoMod, and bots. Automation can help with recurring spam patterns and fast-moving chat, but moderators still need to interpret flags and handle context. Check in with moderators after busy streams or difficult incidents. Use those conversations to clarify rules, improve handoffs, and identify where an automated filter or channel control could reduce repetitive work. Keep the distinction between platform rules and your channel’s standards clear, and do not treat a tool’s flag as a final judgment.
