How to Find and Interpret Data from Ocean Drifting Buoys

Learn how to access NOAA’s free Global Drifter Program observations, choose the right product, retrieve data with ERDDAP, and interpret interpolated tracks, sensor fields, uncertainty, and drogue status correctly.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can download ocean-drifting-buoy observations free from NOAA’s Global Drifter Program (GDP) and use its web search, graphs, files, or ERDDAP service to obtain tracks, sea-surface temperatures, velocities, and selected atmospheric or ocean variables. The important distinction is that you are accessing a scientific data record—not buying a buoy or paying to operate one.

This guide shows how to choose the right GDP product, retrieve a defensible subset, and interpret what each value means. It also explains interpolation, kriging, quality control, metadata, uncertainty, and drogue loss so a plotted line is not mistaken for a sequence of direct measurements.

What is a drifting-buoy dataset?

An ocean drifter is a satellite-tracked instrument released into the sea. It moves with near-surface water and transmits its position and sensor readings. The Global Drifter Program (GDP), managed through NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML), assembles these transmissions into public products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every GDP drifter measures location and sea-surface temperature (SST). Changes in position can be used to estimate near-surface current velocity. Depending on the platform, additional sensors may measure atmospheric pressure, salinity, waves, or wind; no single drifter necessarily carries all of them.

NOAA describes an array of approximately 1,300 active drifters as a program target, not as the number of records in any search result. The first drifter transmission in the program was recorded on February 14, 1979. Typical transmission life is approximately one to 1.5 years, and broad background estimates put average position accuracy near 500 meters. Those figures are averages or context, not guarantees for every buoy or observation.

The observations support weather forecasting, ocean-state monitoring, climate studies, and current analysis. The NOAA Global Drifter Program FAQ states: “On an impact per observation basis, drifter observations are the most valuable contribution of the entire ocean observing system to improving weather forecasts.”

Is GDP data free, and what are you actually accessing?

GDP data, documentation, metadata, download files, and the AOML ERDDAP service are publicly available at no charge. You do not need to purchase hardware, arrange a deployment, pay a telemetry bill, or operate a buoy to use the archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A downloaded record is a scientific observation stream assembled from instruments deployed by observing programs. Your cost is normally limited to storage, analysis software, and computing resources on your side. Access terms, citation requirements, and product-specific caveats still apply.

Keep the product name, version where provided, subset definition, and access date with your analysis. NOAA reprocesses the archive, so the same query can return different values after a later update.

Which GDP product should you use?

Start with the question you need to answer. GDP offers several products whose latency, interval, coverage, and processing differ.

Need Product to investigate What to expect
Recent operational observations for weather or ocean-state work Near-real-time GTS/OSMC data Fast availability, but do not assume the preliminary stream has the same delayed quality control as the reprocessed archive.
Longer records and larger-scale ocean processes Six-hour quality-controlled, interpolated GDP data Regular six-hour positions and temperatures, with quality control and kriging interpolation. The server overview describes coverage from 1979 to the present.
Higher-frequency movement Hourly quality-controlled, interpolated data A subset of drifters with sufficiently useful observations for high-frequency motion, plus velocity and uncertainty fields.

Near-real-time data

Use the near-real-time stream when recency matters more than a completed historical reanalysis. It is appropriate for monitoring current conditions or feeding an operational workflow. Treat it as preliminary: the processing and delayed quality-control stages applied to the six-hour archive should not be assumed for every near-real-time value.

Six-hour interpolated data

The six-hour product is the usual starting point for historical and climate-oriented work. NOAA’s Drifter Data Assembly Center (DAC) quality-controls position and temperature, then interpolates them to regular six-hour times with kriging. The product is easier to compare across drifters than an irregular transmission stream, but a value at an exact six-hour timestamp may be an estimate between observations rather than a direct sensor reading.

Hourly data

The hourly product is intended for higher-frequency motion studies. Its documented fields include latitude, longitude, total SST, diurnal and non-diurnal SST components, eastward and northward velocity, uncertainty estimates, identification and timing fields, deployment information, and drogue metadata. Check the product version because processing methods and living-drifter records can change between releases.

How do you find a drifter record?

The NOAA/AOML GDP landing page is the practical starting point. From there, open the links for near-real-time data, the six-hour archive, hourly products, ERDDAP, and metadata. ERDDAP can be used in a browser or through programmatic requests.

  1. Define the purpose. Decide whether you need current operational observations, a long historical record, or high-frequency movement.
  2. Choose the product. Select near-real-time, six-hour, or hourly data before setting filters. Mixing products without documenting the difference can create misleading comparisons.
  3. Set time and geographic bounds. Enter a start and end date and, when relevant, a latitude-longitude box. Narrowing the request reduces download size and makes quality checks manageable.
  4. Add an identifier when known. Use the drifter identifier or WMO number to follow one platform. If you do not know an identifier, search by region and time first, then inspect the returned metadata.
  5. Select variables. Request only fields needed for the analysis—such as time, latitude, longitude, SST, velocity, drogue status, and uncertainty—rather than downloading every column.
  6. Choose an output format. Use a tabular format for spreadsheets or scripts, a scientific format supported by your analysis software for larger workflows, or a graph for a quick visual check. ERDDAP provides format and graphing options.
  7. Save the provenance. Record the exact filters, product and version, query date, and metadata files beside the downloaded data.

For a first inspection, graph longitude against latitude and time against SST. A map reveals gaps, abrupt jumps, coastline contacts, and loops; a time plot reveals missing periods, suspicious spikes, and whether the sampling interval is actually regular.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you retrieve data with ERDDAP?

ERDDAP is both a web interface and a machine-readable service. In the browser, choose a GDP dataset, select columns, apply constraints, and submit a table or graph request. In a script, construct the request using the dataset’s documented endpoint and query parameters, then save the returned file together with the query text.

Useful constraints include:

  • Time range, using the dataset’s documented time field and timestamp syntax.
  • Latitude and longitude limits for a study region.
  • Drifter identifier or WMO number for one platform.
  • Variable selection to keep files small and processing explicit.

Do not assume that a successful response means every requested value is a direct measurement. The dataset documentation determines whether a field is observed, quality-controlled, interpolated, or retained in raw form.

What is in the six-hour archive?

The complete six-hour archive is distributed as compressed text files divided into four data blocks, with companion directory and metadata files. The directory helps associate records with drifters and deployments; metadata explain field names, units, timing, and status codes.

NOAA’s six-hour instructions describe the processing this way: “The Drifter Data Assembly Center (DAC) at AOML applies quality control procedures to edit these data (position and temperature) and interpolates them to 6-hour intervals using an optimum interpolation procedure called kriging, which is commonly used for two and three-dimensional analyses.”

The archive page also warns that a comprehensive reanalysis improved early detection of grounded drifters. To capture revised values, re-download all data blocks rather than replacing only one file. The status notice dated April 9, 2026, reports that the database had been updated through May 31, 2025, and included this reanalysis. Treat that notice as a dated state of the archive, not a permanent promise about future update timing.

What does quality control and interpolation mean?

Raw transmissions are irregular

Satellite transmissions do not necessarily arrive at neat six-hour or one-hour boundaries. They can contain gaps, duplicate messages, location errors, or implausible SST readings. A raw stream is therefore not automatically ready for plotting or averaging.

Kriging creates regular estimates

Kriging is a statistical interpolation method that estimates values at requested locations or times from surrounding observations while accounting for their spatial or temporal relationship. In GDP’s six-hour product, it supplies regular time steps after position and temperature quality control.

A point at 12:00 in the six-hour file should be described as a quality-controlled, interpolated estimate unless the metadata show a direct observation at that exact time. Interpolation improves comparability and supports many analyses, but it does not create new sensor measurements or eliminate uncertainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Not every variable receives the same treatment

NOAA specifically notes that some pressure, salinity, and wind observations in the six-hour archive are stored raw and are not further edited there. Do not label every column “quality-controlled” merely because it appears in a quality-controlled product. Check each variable’s documentation before calculating trends or combining sensors.

How should you interpret a trajectory?

A trajectory is a time-ordered sequence of reported or estimated positions. Connect the points only after checking the time field, sampling interval, quality flags, and gaps.

  • Direction: The path indicates net movement of the instrument, not automatically a pure current vector.
  • Speed: Derive speed from position changes only after considering interpolation, coordinate handling, sampling interval, and uncertainty.
  • Stationary segments: They can represent weak movement, grounding, missing transmissions handled by processing, or a platform condition—not necessarily calm water.
  • Sharp jumps: Inspect quality flags, timestamps, and nearby coastline geometry before treating them as real motion.
  • Loops and reversals: These may be real eddies or tidal motions, but they can also expose sparse observations or interpolation behavior.

The instrument is designed to follow near-surface water, but its status matters. A drogue centered at approximately 15 meters helps the drifter measure current velocity at that depth. After the drogue is lost, wind exerts a greater influence on the buoy, so the later path may represent a mixture of current and wind-driven motion.

How do you check drogue status, and why does it matter?

  1. Find the drifter’s identifier or WMO number in the returned record.
  2. Open the associated metadata or deployment fields.
  3. Locate drogue-present, drogue-loss, or drogue-status information and note the time of any change.
  4. Compare trajectory segments before and after the reported loss.
  5. State the status in your methods whenever you interpret current velocity or compare drifters.

Do not silently treat the entire path as a current measurement when the drogue was lost partway through. If no loss time is available, report that the status is unknown rather than inferring it from the map alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which fields should you keep?

A minimal trajectory subset usually contains:

  • Drifter identifier and WMO number.
  • Observation or interpolated timestamp, with time zone convention documented.
  • Latitude and longitude.
  • SST, when temperature is relevant.
  • Eastward and northward velocity, if supplied by the product.
  • Uncertainty estimates, especially for hourly data.
  • Drogue status and any loss time.
  • Deployment and transmission-status metadata.
  • Quality flags and processing-version fields.

Retain the original downloaded file as an immutable source copy. Perform cleaning in a separate derived file so that a later reviewer can reproduce which records were removed or transformed.

How do the products differ in practical analysis?

Question Near-real-time Six-hour archive Hourly archive
How quickly does it appear? Fast operational availability. Delayed and periodically reprocessed. Archive product with documented versioning.
Time step Depends on incoming transmissions. Regular six-hour output. Regular hourly output for a qualifying subset.
Position and SST processing Do not assume delayed archive-level quality control. Quality-controlled and kriging-interpolated. Quality-controlled and interpolated according to its documentation.
Best fit Recent monitoring and operational context. Climate and broad ocean-process analysis. Higher-frequency motion.
Important caution Preliminary values can change. Ancillary variables may remain raw. Coverage is limited to drifters with sufficiently useful observations; versions can differ.

These are NOAA’s stated use-case guidelines, not universal guarantees. A regional study may prefer a different product after examining coverage, gaps, uncertainty, and the variable-level documentation.

How do you make a result reproducible?

GDP is a living archive. NOAA updates and reanalyzes records, and the hourly documentation warns that values can differ between versions as processing methods and living-drifter records are revised.

Create a small provenance record containing:

  • Product name: near-real-time, six-hour, or hourly.
  • Dataset version or release identifier.
  • ERDDAP dataset name, if used.
  • Exact time, geographic, and identifier constraints.
  • Variables and output format.
  • Download date and UTC time.
  • Relevant metadata and quality flags.
  • Any local filtering, interpolation, coordinate conversion, or gap handling.

For the six-hour dataset, NOAA requests citation to Lumpkin and Centurioni (2019), Global Drifter Program quality-controlled 6-hour interpolated data from ocean surface drifting buoys, NOAA NCEI dataset DOI 10.25921/7ntx-z961, with the subset used and access date specified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What common mistakes should you avoid?

Confusing free access with free deployment

Public download does not mean that buoy hardware, deployment vessels, satellite service, or maintenance are free. The GDP archive is free to access; it is not a do-it-yourself operating service.

Calling interpolated points observations

Use “six-hour interpolated position” or “hourly interpolated value” when that is what the product contains. Reserve “measurement” for a direct sensor reading documented as such.

Applying one quality claim to every column

Position and temperature receive the six-hour DAC quality-control treatment. Other variables can remain raw in that product. Read the field-level notes.

Ignoring drogue loss

A post-loss track is more wind-influenced. Include status in current studies and explain how you handled the transition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixing versions without recording them

Two files with the same drifter identifier can differ after reprocessing. Store release information and download dates with every subset.

Assuming a complete-looking line means complete sampling

A plotted line can hide gaps, interpolation, or a change in sampling interval. Inspect timestamps and missing-value codes before computing speed, acceleration, residence time, or averages.

A practical workflow for a defensible buoy analysis

  1. Write the scientific question. For example: “Where did drifters in this region move during this season, and how did SST change?”
  2. Select the product that matches the question. Use near-real-time for current conditions, six-hour for long records and broad processes, or hourly for qualifying high-frequency tracks.
  3. Download a small pilot subset. Test one drifter or a short date range before requesting the full archive.
  4. Read the metadata first. Confirm units, field meanings, status flags, interpolation, and uncertainty definitions.
  5. Plot quality diagnostics. Map the track, plot time gaps, and inspect SST and velocity for abrupt changes.
  6. Check instrument status. Mark drogue loss, deployment and recovery information, and any grounding indicators.
  7. Apply documented filters. Remove or flag records using the product’s quality fields rather than an undocumented visual rule.
  8. Calculate derived quantities carefully. State whether velocity came from supplied components or from your own distance-over-time calculation.
  9. Archive provenance. Save the query, raw file, metadata, product version, and access date.
  10. Report limitations. Distinguish direct observations from interpolated values and identify variables that were retained raw.

How often does NOAA update the archive?

The GDP FAQ describes quality-controlled database updates every two to three months at the time represented by that page. Update timing can change. The April 9, 2026 AOML status notice is a more specific dated reference: it says the database was updated through May 31, 2025 and underwent comprehensive reanalysis to improve early detection of grounded drifters.

Because updates are periodic and processing methods evolve, freeze a version for a published analysis and record when you obtained it. If you need the newest values later, rerun the same query and compare the release metadata rather than silently replacing the original file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can you conclude from a buoy track?

You can describe where the instrument moved, how SST changed along its path, and—when the product and metadata support it—estimate near-surface current behavior. You cannot automatically claim that every point is a direct measurement, that every variable is equally quality-controlled, or that the path represents water motion alone after drogue loss.

The strongest interpretation combines the trajectory with product type, timestamp spacing, quality flags, uncertainty, deployment metadata, and drogue history. That combination turns a visually compelling line into a traceable observation record.
