Best TVs and Monitors for Playing Open-World Games on PS5 and Xbox

For most living-room players, a 4K TV with a true 120Hz panel, HDMI 2.1, VRR, low input lag and strong HDR is the best starting point for open-world games. Choose a monitor instead when you play at a desk, sit close to the screen, want a smaller display, or need the sharper pixel density and ergonomics of a desktop setup. There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on your console, the games you play, viewing distance, room lighting, exact display variant and budget.

Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can output up to 120 frames per second in supported games. A 120Hz display therefore covers the practical ceiling for console gaming; buying a panel rated above 120Hz does not make the console output beyond its supported limit. VRR, fast response behavior and low input lag matter at least as much as the headline refresh-rate number.

Quick answer: TV or monitor for an open-world console setup?

Choose a TV when… Choose a monitor when…
You play from a sofa or share the screen with other people. You play at a desk and sit within roughly arm’s reach.
You want a large image, built-in speakers, a remote and simple living-room operation. You prefer a compact screen, adjustable stand and easy access to a keyboard, mouse or PC.
HDR impact, dark-scene contrast and cinematic presentation are priorities. Pixel density, response consistency and desk ergonomics matter more than size.
You need several HDMI inputs for a console, soundbar, streaming device and other sources. You need one or two high-bandwidth inputs and do not need television-tuner features.

Open-world games make the distinction visible. Their large landscapes, distant foliage, weather effects and dark interiors benefit from high resolution, good contrast and stable motion. A television generally gives you a more immersive image at sofa distance; a monitor can look crisper and easier to scan when viewed close up.

What specifications matter for PS5 and Xbox open-world games?

120Hz refresh rate

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S support up to 120fps in games that offer a 120fps mode. A 120Hz panel can display every supported frame without requiring the console to skip refresh opportunities. Some open-world titles prioritize a 30fps or 40fps quality mode for higher visual detail, while others offer a 60fps or 120fps performance mode. The display cannot create extra frames when a game does not provide them, so treat 120Hz as headroom for supported modes rather than a promise that every game will run at 120fps.

VRR

Variable refresh rate lets the display adjust its refresh timing to the game’s current frame rate. That can reduce tearing and make uneven performance look smoother. The console, display input and cable path all need to support the desired VRR signal. Check the exact model manual and the specific HDMI port: specifications from one size or regional variant cannot automatically be applied to another.

Resolution and HDMI bandwidth

A 4K display is the clearest match for PS5 and Xbox Series X output. To combine 4K with 120Hz, a monitor or TV needs an HDMI input with sufficient bandwidth, commonly identified as HDMI 2.1. The label alone is not enough; verify that the port actually accepts 4K/120Hz from your console. Lower-resolution monitors can cost less and may still support 120Hz, but they show less fine detail and can have different compatibility limits, especially with Xbox’s selectable resolutions.

Input lag and response behavior

Input lag is the delay between a button press and the image changing. Pixel response behavior affects how cleanly moving objects appear. RTINGS lists low input lag and fast response time among the useful gaming characteristics for TVs and monitors. Look for measurements taken in the exact resolution and refresh-rate mode you intend to use; a display can be quick at 1080p/120Hz yet slower at 4K/60Hz, or vice versa.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDR, contrast and black levels

HDR is most convincing when a display can produce bright highlights while keeping dark areas deep. OLED panels generally provide pixel-level black control, while Mini LED and other local-dimming LCD designs can deliver high brightness with varying degrees of haloing. Open-world scenes with sunsets, torches, neon signs and night skies expose these differences. Do not judge HDR by a logo alone; check measured brightness, local-dimming behavior and whether the exact model supports HDR from the console input.

Ports and the rest of the signal chain

Count the HDMI inputs you will actually use. A TV may have four HDMI sockets but only one or two with full 4K/120Hz capability. A monitor may provide one high-bandwidth HDMI input and another limited port. If a receiver or soundbar sits between console and display, every device in that chain must pass the required 4K/120Hz and VRR signal.

TV candidates for the best TV for PS5 and Xbox Series X

The following models illustrate different trade-offs described by current buying and testing guides. Availability, pricing, screen sizes and regional features change, so verify the exact listing and variant before buying.

TCL QM7L: feature-rich LCD option

TechRadar’s 2026 coverage describes the TCL QM7L with 4K resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium Pro, Dolby Vision gaming and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). The 144Hz rating exceeds what PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can output, but it can provide useful headroom for other sources. For a console buyer, confirm which HDMI input accepts 4K/120Hz or 4K/144Hz and how VRR behaves with your console.

LG B6: OLED presentation with broad HDMI 2.1 support

TechRadar describes the LG B6 as having four HDMI 2.1 ports supporting 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM and Dolby Vision gaming. That port count is useful if you connect multiple high-bandwidth devices. TechRadar reports its own input-lag measurements of 8.9ms at 4K/60Hz and 4.9ms at 1080p/120Hz. Those numbers apply to the tested LG B6 and those specific modes; they are not a general statistic for OLED televisions. Check the size, firmware and regional variant because model names can cover different specifications.

Hisense QD6QF: lower-cost compromise

RTINGS identifies the Hisense QD6QF as a budget PS5 TV candidate, but notes that it lacks HDMI 2.1 bandwidth for 4K/120Hz. It supports 4K/60Hz or 1440p/120Hz, with limitations around input lag and picture quality. It can make sense if your priority is a larger 4K image at a lower cost and you accept those limits. It should not be presented as equivalent to a full-featured 4K/120Hz TV.

What to verify on any TV

  • Whether the exact size and region include HDMI 2.1 on the ports you plan to use.
  • 4K/120Hz support from your console, not merely a 120Hz panel rating.
  • Which VRR formats are supported and whether VRR works simultaneously with HDR.
  • Measured input lag in the resolution and refresh mode you will use.
  • HDR brightness, local dimming or OLED black-level behavior in a room like yours.
  • Number of usable HDMI inputs after accounting for a soundbar, receiver and other devices.

Monitor candidates for the best monitor for PS5

Monitors suit close viewing and desk setups, but console compatibility is less uniform than on televisions. Confirm the supported HDMI resolution and refresh combinations in the manual rather than relying on the DisplayPort specification or a PC-focused product page.

ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM

RTINGS lists the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM among premium 4K OLED monitor options. A 4K OLED monitor can combine high pixel density, strong contrast and fast pixel transitions in a compact format. Check the HDMI input’s console capabilities, HDR behavior and any restrictions on 4K/120Hz before purchase.

Dell Alienware AW2725Q

The Dell Alienware AW2725Q is another premium 4K OLED model named in RTINGS’ monitor coverage. Its 27-inch class is suited to desk distance, where the pixel density of 4K is easy to appreciate. Verify the exact input bandwidth and VRR support for your PS5 or Xbox rather than assuming every port has identical features.

Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx

RTINGS identifies the Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx as a 4K Mini LED option. Mini LED can provide higher full-screen brightness than many OLED designs, which may help in a bright room, while local dimming quality determines how well it preserves dark-scene contrast. Confirm its console signal modes and whether HDR remains available at 4K/120Hz.

When a 1440p monitor is sensible

A 1440p monitor can be a cost-conscious choice when you sit close, have limited desk space or value 120Hz over maximum resolution. Xbox consoles often expose more resolution choices than PS5, so compatibility must be checked per console. If your goal is 4K/120Hz, choose a 4K monitor with the required HDMI bandwidth instead of assuming a high PC refresh rate will translate to the console.

How to choose the right size and viewing distance

Living-room TV placement

Use the distance from your eyes to the screen as the starting point, then choose the largest size that fits your room and budget without forcing uncomfortable head movement. A larger screen makes distant game-world details easier to read, but excessive size at a short distance can reveal compression, poor upscaling or edge-to-edge scanning fatigue. Sit centered to the panel when possible, especially with displays whose contrast or color changes off-axis.

Desk monitor placement

At a desk, a 27-inch 4K monitor gives substantially higher pixel density than a similarly sized 1440p model. That can make foliage, map text and HUD elements look cleaner. Measure the depth of your desk and the monitor stand, and leave room for the console, ventilation and cable bends. If you sit farther away than a typical desk position, a larger TV may deliver a more immersive result for the same resolution.

Buying checklist: a step-by-step decision process

  1. List your actual games and modes. Check whether your favorite open-world titles offer 30fps quality, 60fps performance or 120fps modes. This determines how valuable 120Hz and VRR will be.
  2. Measure the viewing position. Record sofa-to-screen or chair-to-screen distance, room width and direct light sources. Use those measurements to set a sensible size range.
  3. Set the output target. Decide whether you require 4K/120Hz, would accept 4K/60Hz, or prefer 1440p/120Hz for a lower-cost setup.
  4. Inspect the exact ports. Read the manual or specification sheet for the specific size and region. Identify which HDMI input supports the resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR combination you want.
  5. Check display behavior. Compare measured input lag, response-time consistency, HDR brightness, contrast and viewing-angle performance from reliable tests.
  6. Map the signal chain. Include the console, HDMI cable, receiver or soundbar and display. Any limited device or port can reduce the final signal.
  7. Recheck current availability. Model revisions, firmware and regional names change. Confirm the seller’s model code and return policy before ordering.

Setting up 4K/120Hz and VRR correctly

  1. Use the console’s supplied cable first. A PS5 or Xbox Series X cable is generally sufficient when connected directly to a compatible display input, according to Tom’s Guide.
  2. Connect directly to the correct HDMI socket. Select the port identified by the display manual as supporting 4K/120Hz and VRR. Do not assume every HDMI socket has the same bandwidth.
  3. Configure the console output. On PS5, open Settings, then Screen and Video, and review Resolution, 120 Hz Output and VRR. On Xbox, open Settings, then General, TV & display options, and inspect Resolution, Refresh rate and the 4K TV details screen.
  4. Enable the display’s gaming features. Turn on Game Mode or the equivalent low-latency preset, then enable VRR, ALLM or the manufacturer’s console gaming mode where available.
  5. Test HDR and 120Hz separately. If enabling both causes a blank screen or fallback to 60Hz, temporarily disable HDR or VRR to identify which feature is failing, then check the manual for supported combinations.
  6. Add intermediate equipment only after the direct connection works. Reconnect a receiver or soundbar and verify that it passes the same signal. If it does not, connect the console directly to the display and send audio separately.

If you replace the supplied cable, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. It is a troubleshooting or replacement option, not a mandatory upgrade when the original cable and direct connection already deliver the required signal.

Common problems and fixes

The console only offers 4K/60Hz

  • Move the cable to the display’s designated HDMI 2.1 input.
  • Confirm the model actually supports 4K/120Hz; the Hisense QD6QF, for example, does not.
  • Remove a receiver or soundbar temporarily and test a direct connection.
  • Check the console’s 120Hz setting and the display’s Game Mode.
  • Try another certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if the original is damaged or unusually long.

VRR is unavailable or causes instability

  • Verify VRR support for the exact console, input and resolution.
  • Update the display and console firmware where updates are offered.
  • Disable VRR temporarily to determine whether the issue is limited to that feature.
  • Check whether the display restricts VRR when HDR, Dolby Vision or a particular picture mode is active.

The picture looks washed out or too dark in HDR

  • Use the display’s Game HDR or equivalent mode rather than a standard picture preset.
  • Run the console’s HDR calibration after the display has warmed up.
  • Compare the result with HDR disabled; some entry-level displays have limited brightness or contrast that makes HDR less convincing.
  • Reduce direct glare. Bright windows and lamps can make black levels appear gray and hide shadow detail.

Motion looks blurry despite 120Hz

  • Check response-time behavior in the selected overdrive or gaming mode.
  • Make sure the game is actually running its 120fps mode; a 30fps quality mode will not become 120fps.
  • Disable unnecessary motion interpolation on a TV, which can add processing delay or visual artifacts.
  • Use VRR when the game’s frame rate fluctuates within the display’s supported range.

Room lighting, HDR and open-world immersion

Choose OLED when deep blacks and contrast in a controlled room are more important than maximum sustained brightness. Choose a strong Mini LED or other bright LCD design when daylight, reflections and large bright scenes dominate your play time. A glossy screen can make contrast look dramatic in a dark room but may reflect windows and lamps; a matte finish reduces reflections but can soften perceived contrast. Neither panel type is automatically better for every room.

Open-world games also benefit from good upscaling and shadow detail because you spend long periods looking at distant terrain rather than a fixed competitive interface. Read tests that examine gradients, local-dimming transitions and dark-scene detail, not only peak brightness or refresh rate.

Understanding product claims and evidence

Manufacturer descriptions are useful for confirming advertised features but are not independent measurements. Sony Professional’s product information for the FWD-65XR8M2 states: “4K/120fps, a Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) are all available as features of HDMI 2.1., ensuring smooth, clear, responsive gameplay every time.” The same document describes PS5-specific Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. Treat those as the manufacturer’s description of that display’s features, then verify independent testing and the exact regional model.

RTINGS says it has bought and tested more than 405 monitors on its PS5 monitor guide. The cited page does not attach a publication year to that figure, so it should not be treated as a dated market statistic. Likewise, TechRadar’s 8.9ms and 4.9ms LG B6 figures are measurements for one tested model in two specific modes, not a universal performance claim.

Which setup is best for different buyers?

Buyer priority Most suitable starting point Why Main check before purchase
Shared living-room play 4K 120Hz TV Large image, HDR impact and multiple inputs. Actual HDMI 2.1 port and viewing distance.
Desk gaming in a small room 27-inch-class 4K monitor High pixel density and close-range clarity. Console-compatible HDMI modes and VRR.
Bright room Bright LCD or Mini LED TV/monitor Higher sustained brightness can overcome daylight. Reflection handling and local-dimming quality.
Dark-room cinematic play OLED TV or monitor Deep blacks and strong contrast for night scenes. HDR behavior, burn-in guidance and room reflections.
Lower-cost 120Hz goal Display supporting 1440p/120Hz Can deliver smooth supported modes without 4K/120 hardware. Resolution support for your specific PS5 or Xbox.

Final recommendation

Start with a 4K 120Hz TV if your PS5 or Xbox lives in a living room, you sit several feet away, or you want HDR and cinematic scale. Start with a 4K HDMI 2.1 monitor if you play at a desk and value compact size and pixel density. Prioritize verified 4K/120Hz input support, VRR, low measured input lag, fast response behavior and suitable HDR over a higher refresh-rate label. The best display is the one whose exact ports, panel behavior, room fit and console modes match how you actually play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do PS5 and Xbox Series X|S need a 144Hz display?

No. The consoles support up to 120fps in supported games. A 120Hz display covers that console limit; a 144Hz rating is additional headroom for other sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is HDMI 2.1 by itself proof that 4K/120Hz will work?

No. Check the exact input, supported signal table and regional variant. HDMI 2.1 branding does not guarantee that every port accepts 4K/120Hz or VRR.

Should I buy a new HDMI cable for 4K/120Hz?

Usually not. The cable supplied with a PS5 or Xbox Series X is generally sufficient for a direct connection to a compatible input. Replace it only if it is damaged or troubleshooting points to the cable, and choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
