Open Start > Settings > System > Optional features, then search the feature list for OpenSSH. If OpenSSH Client is listed, it is installed. If it is missing, add it from that page. Settings manages the Windows feature; to connect to a remote computer, open a terminal and run the ssh command.
Check whether OpenSSH Client is installed
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Go to System > Optional features.
- Search the added or installed features for OpenSSH. If OpenSSH Client appears, the client feature is present. Microsoft documents this check in its Windows Terminal SSH tutorial.
Settings wording and controls can vary slightly by Windows 11 release, but the relevant page is System > Optional features.

Install OpenSSH Client from Settings
- On the Optional features page, select its control to add or view available features.
- Search for OpenSSH Client, select it, and choose the install action.
- Allow Windows to complete the installation, then return to the installed-features list and search for OpenSSH to check that it is present.
OpenSSH Client is an optional Windows capability. Microsoft’s OpenSSH installation guide also documents installation through PowerShell.

Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name OpenSSH.Client~~~~0.0.1.0This installs the same Windows OpenSSH Client capability available through Optional Features.
Open a terminal to use the client
The Settings feature list is not an SSH session launcher. After installation, open Windows Terminal or another command-line shell and run ssh with the destination host, for example ssh username@hostname. Microsoft identifies C:WindowsSystem32OpenSSH as the default OpenSSH directory in its Windows Terminal SSH tutorial.

OpenSSH Client is the local tool for initiating connections. OpenSSH Server is a separate component: its sshd service accepts incoming connections on the machine where it is installed. See Microsoft’s OpenSSH for Windows overview for the client/server distinction.
If installation does not work
An installation failure does not establish a single cause. Feature on Demand downloads, access to the required update source, and organizational update policies can affect installation. Check the error message and the device’s update or management configuration; Microsoft’s OpenSSH feature installation troubleshooting guide covers applicable update-source and policy issues.
