How to Build a Great League Team in Pokémon GO

Build a Great League team by choosing three Pokémon that each meet the 1,500 CP limit, cover one another’s weaknesses, and give you a workable response when a matchup goes badly. First confirm whether you’re entering open Great League or a restricted cup: cups can add type rules and bans. Check current move changes and battle mechanics before investing Stardust or candy; there is no single universally best trio established by the available official guidance.

Check the format before choosing Pokémon

In Great League, each Pokémon must be at or below 1,500 CP, and a Battle Party contains three Pokémon. Those are the starting rules for open Great League. A named cup may impose further eligibility rules, so a Pokémon that fits the CP cap may still be ineligible.

For example, the Pokémon North America International Championships 2026 Great League cup used the 1,500 CP ceiling but also restricted eligible types and listed bans. Those were rules for that specific event, not a general definition of open Great League. Check the active event’s rules before building a cup team: Niantic’s 2026 Pokémon North America International Championships announcement.

Build around coverage, not CP totals

A team is more than three Pokémon that individually qualify. Think about the opposing types each member can pressure, the types it struggles against, and whether one of its teammates can help with those threats. Niantic’s general battle guidance recommends varying your party to take advantage of potential type matchups: Pokémon GO Trainer Battles guidance.

For each candidate, ask:

  • Which opposing types can it threaten with its attacks?
  • Which types threaten it, and can either teammate help cover those matchups?
  • Can it enter the battle after a switch without immediately facing another unfavorable matchup?
  • Do its current Fast and Charged Attacks give it useful energy flow and coverage?

These questions help you compare your available Pokémon without assuming a particular trio is currently top-ranked. The official guidance establishes the team size and core mechanics, but it does not identify a best current lineup or provide matchup rankings.

Check attacks and battle mechanics as they are now

Fast Attacks build energy for Charged Attacks. Charged Attacks, Protect Shields, and switches all affect how a battle unfolds. A switch can help a Pokémon avoid a super-effective attack, but the opponent can continue attacking during the switch, so a switch is not a guaranteed reset.

Move details can change with seasonal updates. Niantic’s 2026 season update lists adjustments to move power, energy costs, and energy generation; an old recommendation may therefore be outdated even if the Pokémon remains eligible. Review the current update before settling on a moveset: Pokémon GO’s 2026 season update.

The battle system also changed in 2026. Niantic said the new PvP system rollout began June 23, 2026. The Pokémon GO team described its aim this way: “The updated battle system reinforces turn-based resolution at a foundational level, better mitigating the impact of network hiccups and device performance differences.” See Niantic’s battle-system announcement. Because the system and seasonal move details have changed, validate older strategy advice against the current game rather than assuming its timing or recommendations still apply.

Use a repeatable team-building process

  1. Choose the format. Confirm whether the event is open Great League or a named cup. Read the active rules for type requirements and bans, not just the CP limit.
  2. Shortlist eligible candidates. Check that each Pokémon can finish at or below 1,500 CP and is allowed in the chosen format. Confirm eligibility before spending resources.
  3. Compare team coverage. Look at each candidate’s strengths and weaknesses alongside the other two. Prefer a trio whose members can help with threats that trouble their teammates, rather than three choices with overlapping vulnerabilities.
  4. Review current moves. Check Fast Attack energy generation and the power and energy costs of available Charged Attacks against current move information. Seasonal changes can alter how useful a familiar moveset is.
  5. Plan switches and Protect Shields. Consider what you can bring in if the lead faces a bad matchup, and which Pokémon you most need to preserve with a shield. A switch can avoid a weakness, but the opponent may still attack while it happens.
  6. Practice and revise. Note which opposing Pokémon repeatedly cause trouble, whether your lead is doing its job, and when a switch or shield changes an outcome. Use those observations to reconsider coverage and roles.

Niantic’s beginner battle guidance also covers switching and Protect Shields: Trainer Battle basics. It provides general foundations; for strategy, keep the 2026 system transition in mind.

Make the investment decision after the checks

Before powering up or changing a Pokémon for your team, verify its final CP will remain within the cap, its cup eligibility, and whether it can use the moves you want under current move rules. Then decide whether it fills a useful team role. Official guidance reviewed here does not quantify Stardust or candy costs, so the resource commitment depends on the Pokémon and the changes it needs.
