Use Nmap on a network you administer: discover responsive hosts, then scan TCP ports 22, 23, and 8080 with service/version detection. Those port numbers are clues, not proof of which service or device is present. Confirm the response and match it against your network records before deciding whether an unknown host needs attention.
Before scanning, define the network you are allowed to assess
Identify the subnet or specific hosts you administer or have permission to assess. Check the network ranges in your router or network-management records, and keep the scan within that scope. Even a targeted scan can appear in monitoring logs or trigger alerts.

nmap -sn <authorized-subnet>The -sn option asks Nmap to discover hosts without performing a port scan. On a local Ethernet network, Nmap uses ARP for IPv4 and Neighbor Discovery for IPv6 by default. Discovery is not guaranteed to find every device: filtering can prevent a host from responding to a probe. See Nmap’s Host Discovery documentation.

nmap -sV -p 22,23,8080 <authorized-subnet-or-hosts>The -p option limits the scan to the three TCP ports in question. The -sV option probes open ports to identify the service and, when the service reveals enough information, may report a product, version, device type, or OS family. Nmap may first listen for an initial banner; if that is not enough, it can try service-specific probes. If you already know that discovery probes miss specific devices, Nmap’s -Pn option skips host discovery and attempts the requested scan against every supplied target. Use it only with a narrow, authorized list: it may take longer because Nmap does not first filter targets through host discovery.
What ports 22, 23, and 8080 can tell you

Nmap’s service database lists common port associations, but a database label is not the same as identifying what is actually listening on a particular host. As the Nmap guide puts it, “People do and can run services on strange ports.” Active version detection is more informative than a port-number guess, though it generates additional scan traffic. Correlate scan results with your device records
A scan can help narrow down an unknown host; it cannot reliably name every device or its physical location on its own. Build an evidence trail rather than treating one fingerprint as conclusive:
- Record the observation: note the IP address, TCP port, service/version result, and scan time.
- Gather available clues: check any hostname, MAC address, device-type, or OS-family information Nmap reports.
- Compare independent records: consult router or DHCP records, access-point or switch client lists, and your asset inventory.
- Confirm with the responsible person: ask the likely device owner or network administrator before assigning identity or ownership.
Host metadata and service fingerprints are clues, not guarantees of make, model, owner, or location. A missing hostname or uncertain OS result does not by itself mean the device is malicious.

Decide whether an open service needs action
An open port means a service responded to the scan; it does not, by itself, establish compromise or a vulnerability. If the service is expected, confirm its owner and access controls. If Telnet or an unexplained management interface is not needed, coordinate with the responsible owner and restrict or disable it through your normal change process.
Do not treat a version string as a complete vulnerability assessment. Vendors sometimes backport security fixes, so an apparently old version alone cannot prove that software is vulnerable. Confirm the exact product and build, then check the vendor’s security notices and the device’s configuration before making a risk decision.
