The main difference is the track: AMA Supercross races on custom-built courses inside stadiums, while Pro Motocross races outdoors on natural terrain. That changes the demands on riders—Supercross emphasizes technical precision and consistency; Pro Motocross emphasizes speed and endurance over longer motos. The two series award separate championships, then contribute points toward the SMX postseason.
How the tracks change the racing
Supercross courses are constructed inside stadiums. Their compact, engineered layouts make technical control and consistency central to the challenge. Pro Motocross uses outdoor tracks shaped by natural terrain, where the series describes the test as all-out speed and endurance. Outdoor conditions can also affect an individual event, but tracks and conditions vary; there is no single course or weather profile that describes every National.

The distinction is not simply indoor versus outdoor scenery: the venue and terrain define different racing disciplines. The official Supercross FAQ summarizes the contrast as stadium-built tracks requiring precision and consistency versus natural-terrain racing showcasing speed and endurance.
How a race event is structured
Supercross: qualifying, heats and a Main Event
In the standard 2026 format, riders qualify, then race heat events and, where needed, a Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) to earn places in the Main Event. Championship points are awarded in the Main Event. The 2026 rulebook provides for a 22-rider Main Event gate; the event can be scheduled by laps or by a timed format.

There are exceptions to the usual one-Main-Event shape. Houston, Indianapolis and Cleveland are 2026 Triple Crown rounds: each class races three times, and the overall result is determined by combining the race results. Check the 2026 AMA Supercross Rulebook and event schedule for details.
Pro Motocross: two motos per class
A standard Pro Motocross event has two motos for each class. Under the 2026 rulebook, each 450MX and 250MX moto is scheduled for 30 minutes plus two laps, with championship points based on each moto’s finish. Event-specific adjustments are possible, so the rulebook describes the normal format rather than an unchangeable guarantee. The governing document is the 2026 AMA Pro Racing Rulebook: Pro Motocross Championship.

Separate titles, shared SMX postseason
Supercross and Pro Motocross each crown their own season champion. Points from both regular seasons also count toward qualification for the SMX postseason; the combined series does not replace either discipline’s title. The official format describes three postseason rounds: two playoffs and a final. See the series FAQ for the championship relationship.

Supercross brings racing into stadiums, concentrating the event in an urban venue. Pro Motocross takes spectators to established outdoor tracks, where the natural terrain is visible and conditions may be part of the race-day experience. For either series, check event-specific information rather than assuming every venue or viewing experience is alike.

For the 2026 U.S. season, the announced broadcast plan puts live coverage of races, qualifying and heats from both series on Peacock. Some races are also scheduled for NBC, with select coverage on NBCSN. Rights and distribution are season- and territory-specific, so the 2026 NBC Sports and SMX broadcast announcement should not be treated as a permanent or worldwide viewing guide.
