To find and hire a live stream moderator, define the work and authority first, then recruit for trustworthiness, reliability, judgment, communication, and familiarity with your community and platform. Be clear about schedule, volunteer or paid status, and escalation boundaries before anyone accepts. Assess candidates with realistic chat scenarios, assign only the platform permissions they need, and give them written rules before their first shift.
Define what the moderator will do
“Moderator” can mean enforcing rules, welcoming viewers, answering routine questions, or all three. Write a short role brief before asking anyone to join. Include:

- Coverage: platform, channels or events, stream dates and times, and time zone.
- Availability: expected shifts, how the person should communicate if unavailable, and whether backup coverage is needed.
- Duties: which behavior to address, whether to engage with viewers, and whether to handle routine questions.
- Authority: which actions they may take independently and which require the streamer or lead moderator’s approval.
- Escalation: whom to contact for uncertain rule calls, urgent safety concerns, or a situation that is moving too quickly to manage alone.
- Terms: whether the role is paid or volunteer, how any payment is handled, and what privacy expectations apply.
There is no established universal staffing ratio for moderators. Consider the pace and complexity of your chat, the coverage you need, and whether one person can realistically monitor it while also engaging with viewers.

Prepare a concise code of conduct with examples of behavior that is not acceptable. Make it clear what happens when a rule is broken and what moderators should do when a message is ambiguous. Share the code and operating expectations with the moderation team before they begin; AnyKey’s September 2018 guide recommends giving the team the code well ahead of time.

Write down the difference between a routine call and an escalation. For example, moderators may be able to remove clearly prohibited content or time out a user, while an unclear case, credible safety concern, or dispute involving a regular community member may need the streamer or lead moderator. The right boundary depends on your rules and platform controls, so do not assume every moderator should have identical authority.
Where to look for candidates
Start with people who already understand the community
Regular, constructive participation can help you identify people who understand the channel’s tone and expectations. Existing relationships can also offer a basis for trust, but friendship alone is not evidence of reliability or sound judgment. Use the same role expectations and assessment for people you know as for other candidates.

A 2023 peer-reviewed study by Joseph Seering and Sanjay R. Kairam surveyed 1,053 active adult Twitch moderators in the United States. It found that moderators in larger channels were more likely to have been selected because they were regular active participants, while moderators in smaller channels were more likely to have had a prior connection with the streamer. This describes patterns in that Twitch-specific U.S. sample; it is not a rule for every platform or channel.

Use professional recruitment when the role calls for it
For a larger production or a role with defined shifts and duties, you can investigate professional recruitment channels independently. The available evidence does not establish a current, verified moderator marketplace or agency, so assess any provider yourself rather than treating a listing as an endorsement. Ask about relevant live-chat experience, references where appropriate, availability, privacy practices, and how the candidate handles escalation.

Assess judgment before granting access
Do not make a decision based only on how long someone has been in the community. Discuss realistic situations and ask the candidate to explain their reasoning and when they would involve you. This is a practical screening approach, not a formally validated hiring test.
- A viewer posts repeated spam after a warning. What action would you take, and what would you record or report?
- A message appears to target or harass another viewer, but the context is unclear. How would you respond without escalating the conflict?
- A regular viewer breaks a rule they have not broken before. Would you apply the same process, and when would you ask the streamer to review it?
- Chat becomes fast-moving and several issues appear at once. How would you prioritize, and what would you leave for the streamer or another moderator?
- A viewer raises a safety-sensitive concern. What would you do immediately, and whom would you contact?
Look for clear, calm communication, a consistent understanding of the written rules, willingness to ask for help, and dependable availability. Twitch guidance emphasizes choosing reliable moderators and communicating the community environment you want. It also cautions that automation cannot catch everything or be fully accurate, so human judgment remains important.

Agree on compensation and privacy
State plainly whether the position is paid or volunteer before the candidate accepts. AnyKey’s September 2018 guide notes that volunteer labor has been common on Twitch and recommends that larger, revenue-generating productions budget for moderator compensation. That guide does not set a current standard rate, and no dependable current hourly, per-stream, or event pay figure is established here; avoid presenting an unsupported number as typical.

Assign only the platform access the role requires
Twitch
Twitch provides a moderator role and moderation tools, including AutoMod and Shield Mode. AutoMod holds potentially risky messages for moderator review; it supports human decisions rather than replacing them. Shield Mode can quickly activate preset safety settings. Explain how your team should use these tools and when to escalate. See Twitch’s guidance on setting up moderation for your channel and its chat moderation documentation.
YouTube
YouTube distinguishes between standard and managing moderators; managing moderators have more options. Moderators can remove inappropriate content, time out a user, or hide a user from the channel. YouTube says moderator status continues until the creator removes it, so remove access when the person no longer needs it. Choose the least-privileged role that fits the duties and walk the moderator through the controls before a live shift. See YouTube’s live chat moderation guidance.
Onboard, then review how the arrangement works
- Share the written rules: provide the code of conduct, examples, and escalation contacts before the first shift.
- Walk through the controls: demonstrate the relevant platform tools and explain which actions are within the moderator’s authority.
- Confirm practical details: verify schedule, communication method, backup coverage, and the agreed compensation terms, if any.
- Check in after early shifts: discuss difficult calls, clarify uncertain rules, and update the written guidance when necessary.
- Review access periodically: keep platform permissions aligned with current duties and remove them when no longer needed.
There is no source-established review cadence; choose one that fits your streaming schedule and the complexity of the work.
