SquirrelDisk helps you find which folders and files are taking up room, but a large item is not automatically safe to delete. Scan the disk, inspect the item’s full path and purpose, then choose a reversible cleanup or make a backup before removing anything you are unsure about.
Start with your operating system’s storage tools
For routine cleanup, begin with the tools built into your operating system. They can identify common categories of removable data and offer cleanup options designed for system-managed files. SquirrelDisk is useful when you need to explore disk usage folder by folder.

Windows
Open Settings → System → Storage to review storage categories and Cleanup recommendations. Storage Sense can remove temporary files and empty the Recycle Bin on a schedule. For additional system cleanup, run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) and select Clean up system files. SquirrelDisk’s Windows guidance recommends these built-in options for common cleanup needs.
macOS
Use macOS storage management for its built-in overview and recommendations. If you are investigating System Data, SquirrelDisk’s Mac guidance points to user-owned items such as caches, iOS backups, and developer files in your Library folder—not direct removal of system folders.

Linux
Use the storage and package-management tools appropriate to your Linux distribution for operating-system cleanup. SquirrelDisk can help you locate large folders, but its chart does not identify whether a file is safe to remove.
Find large items with SquirrelDisk
SquirrelDisk is free, open-source software for macOS, Windows, and Linux. The project describes a workflow in which you scan a disk, browse a sunburst chart or optional treemap, and collect items for cleanup. Its product page says chart slices reflect disk use, scans update live, folders can be zoomed into, and a side list sorts contents largest first. These are the developer’s feature descriptions, not independent performance or safety test results. See the official product page and project repository.
- Choose the disk or folder to scan. If only one disk or user folder appears full, start there rather than assuming every volume needs cleanup.
- Look for large areas in the chart. Select a large slice or treemap block to drill into the folders beneath it.
- Use the size-sorted list to narrow your search. Check the filename and full path; a large folder is a lead to investigate, not a deletion recommendation.
- Confirm what the item does. Be especially cautious with operating-system directories, application data, backups, virtual-machine images, developer data, and anything whose purpose you cannot identify.
- Select a cleanup action only when you understand its consequences. If you are uncertain, leave the item alone or back it up before removal.
- Check the operating system’s storage view afterward. Compare its available-space reading with the amount you expected to reclaim instead of relying only on the analyzer’s folder totals.
Understand why displayed sizes can differ
SquirrelDisk says it reports space actually occupied on disk, counts linked folders once, and treats cloud-only files as zero local usage. This means a cloud-service listing or a simple sum of folder sizes may not match the analyzer’s total. Available space after cleanup can also be affected by snapshots, open files, filesystem behavior, and cloud placeholders; do not assume deleting an item will free exactly the size shown.

Choose a cleanup action that matches your confidence
| Action | When it fits | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Move selected items to Trash | You have identified the item but want a chance to recover it. | SquirrelDisk’s Mac guidance says a Trash move can be undone. |
| Back up, then remove | You may need the item later or cannot confidently rule out its value. | Copy it to external storage or cloud storage before cleanup. An external drive is optional; SquirrelDisk does not require one. |
| Permanent deletion | You are certain the item is no longer needed and accept that it cannot be restored through Trash. | The Mac guidance says permanent deletion cannot be undone. |
| Secure erase | You want SquirrelDisk’s overwrite step for a file and understand its limits. | The product page describes overwriting a file three times—zeros, ones, then random data—before renaming and removing it. This is not a guarantee that recovery is impossible. |
For files you might need, the backup-first option is safer than treating a large size as evidence that deletion is harmless. If you have no backup destination, do not permanently remove an uncertain item just to recover space quickly.
Platform-specific files that need extra care
Windows: leave component and paging files to Windows
Do not manually delete files from C:WindowsWinSxS. Windows component files and hard links can make the folder appear larger than its actual disk use. Use Disk Cleanup’s Windows Update Cleanup or the DISM component-cleanup method described in SquirrelDisk’s Windows guidance instead.
Do not manually delete hiberfil.sys or pagefile.sys. If you have decided you do not need hibernation, the Windows command is powercfg /hibernate off; changing hibernation affects that feature. Leave the page file under Windows management unless you understand why you need to change it.

macOS: distinguish user data from system data and backups
SquirrelDisk’s Mac page says system folders cannot be collected directly. If you are investigating System Data, inspect user-owned Library items such as caches, iOS backups, or developer files carefully. Do not delete a Time Machine backup disk image directly; use Finder’s Manage Backups interface to remove old device backups.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCloud-only files in iCloud Drive and supported cloud services count as zero local disk space according to the same guidance. Removing a cloud-only placeholder will not reclaim local storage that it was not using.
Linux: take filesystem behavior into account
The Linux workflow includes collecting items for Trash, permanent deletion, backup, or optional secure erase. The available product guidance cautions that old blocks may persist on SSDs and Btrfs. Do not treat an overwrite operation as proof that data is unrecoverable; full-disk encryption such as LUKS is the more relevant protection for data at rest.

Secure erase is not a substitute for encryption
Normal deletion is intended to free space; secure erase attempts to make recovery harder by overwriting a file before removal. On modern flash storage, including SSDs and APFS volumes, old blocks may remain despite an overwrite. SquirrelDisk’s Mac guidance points to FileVault and its Windows guidance to BitLocker for protecting data on those systems. Enable full-disk encryption when your goal is protecting data at rest; do not rely on secure erase as a guarantee of unrecoverability.
Verify the result and keep the right backup
After cleanup, reopen your operating system’s storage view and check available space. If the change is smaller than expected, consider whether the selected item was cloud-only, whether linked folders affected the apparent total, or whether snapshots, open files, or filesystem behavior are involved. Keep any backup until you have confirmed that the files you still need are accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete hiberfil.sys or pagefile.sys with SquirrelDisk?
Do not manually delete either file. Windows manages them; use the Windows hibernation setting or command only if you intend to disable hibernation, and leave the page file managed by Windows unless you understand the reason for changing it.
Do OneDrive files count toward the size?
SquirrelDisk says cloud-only files count as zero local disk usage. A file stored locally can use disk space; a cloud-only placeholder may not.
Can I delete System Data with SquirrelDisk?
SquirrelDisk’s Mac guidance says system folders cannot be collected directly. Investigate user-owned Library items, such as caches, iOS backups, and developer files, rather than attempting to remove system folders.
Can I undo a cleanup?
The Mac guidance says moving items to Trash can be undone. Permanent deletion and secure erase cannot be undone through Trash.
