How to Find and Enable Windows 11 Optional Features Safely

Windows 11 “hidden features” can mean optional components, developer settings, or staged features. Learn which supported route fits and how to prepare to undo a change.

In Windows 11, “hidden features” can mean several different things: supported optional components, developer settings, advanced configuration, or features Microsoft is rolling out gradually. Start with the supported Settings page for optional components; don’t treat an undocumented feature-unlock tool as an equivalent route. The exact labels and locations can vary by Windows release, update, edition, device, and organizational policy.

How do I find hidden features in Windows 11?

First check what kind of feature you mean. Optional Windows components are installable through supported Windows controls; they are not the same as unreleased or gradually staged features. Developer and advanced settings serve particular configuration needs, while a staged feature may not yet be available to every device. Microsoft describes optional installable components as Features on Demand in its Add, remove, or hide Windows features documentation.

Check your installed Windows version before following a guide: open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. Because the interface can change across releases and cumulative updates, use the Settings search box for “Optional features” or the specific setting name if the listed path does not match your screen.

How do I turn on optional features?

Use Settings for a component you can identify

  1. Open Settings > System > Optional features. If that path is absent, search Settings for “Optional features.” Microsoft notes that page locations and labels can differ on supported Windows versions without the latest cumulative update.
  2. Beside Add an optional feature, select View features.
  3. Find and select the component you actually need. Review the selection and its details before proceeding.
  4. Select the control to add or install it, then let Windows complete the operation. Restart only if Windows asks you to.

The list available on your device can depend on Windows version, edition, device configuration, and policy. Work- or school-managed devices may have optional-feature access controlled or hidden by an administrator; ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass that control. Microsoft documents the supported Settings route and organization controls in Add, remove, or hide Windows features.

Use PowerShell only when the feature name is known

Microsoft documents the PowerShell cmdlet Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature for enabling a named feature in an online Windows installation or an offline image. Its command reference includes an online example using -Online and a feature name. That reference is for DISM and Windows Server 2025; it does not establish that every named feature is present or appropriate on every Windows 11 edition.

For a managed device or image, use the exact feature name and deployment instructions appropriate to that system. Do not guess names or paste an unreviewed command: a wrong component, dependency, or source can make the operation fail or produce an unintended change. If you only need a standard optional component on your own PC, use Settings instead.

Where is “Turn Windows features on or off”?

Windows has a traditional Turn Windows features on or off interface for Windows components, but the supported route documented for adding or removing Features on Demand in current Windows 11 is Settings > System > Optional features. The available interface and component list can vary by release and policy. If you are following instructions that name the older interface, confirm that the specific component and route apply to your Windows version rather than assuming every component appears in both places.

Which kind of feature fits your need?

Approach Best for Risk or limitation
Settings > Optional features Supported optional Windows components you can identify Available items and interface vary by build and policy, according to Microsoft’s Add, remove, or hide Windows features documentation.
Documented PowerShell cmdlet Administrators who know the exact feature name or manage Windows images Feature names, dependencies, and source handling need care. Microsoft’s Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature (Dism) reference does not guarantee every feature is available on every Windows 11 edition.
Developer or advanced settings Readers with a specific development or power-user configuration need Purpose and location vary by release; enabling settings without a need adds complexity. See Microsoft’s Advanced Windows Settings and Settings for developers documentation.
Windows Sandbox Testing software in an isolated environment rather than installing it on the host Availability and setup depend on the device’s Windows configuration; isolation is not a guarantee against every risk. See Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox frequently asked questions (FAQ).
Undocumented feature-ID utilities No general recommendation Current feature IDs and a general safety guarantee are not established here; do not use IDs copied from a different Windows build as step-by-step instructions.

Developer and advanced settings

Use developer settings only when you have a development task that calls for them, and use the supported page for your installed release. Microsoft documents developer-oriented controls and advanced settings, but their placement changes: in Windows 11 version 25H2 and later, former For developers settings are surfaced under Advanced. A guide for an earlier release may therefore show a different route.

Windows Sandbox for software testing

Sandbox is an official Windows option for testing software in an isolated environment. Microsoft describes it as a way to test software without installing or uninstalling it on the host; that describes the intended use, not a promise that every activity is risk-free. It is distinct from a fully configured Hyper-V virtual machine. Check availability and requirements for your specific device before trying to set it up. Microsoft’s FAQ also notes that, beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2, the older Sandbox app attempts to download its latest version from Microsoft Store.

Is it safe to enable hidden Windows features?

It is safer to use a supported Windows control for a component you understand than to force an undocumented feature flag. “Hidden” alone does not tell you what a setting does, whether it is available on your build, or whether it is appropriate for your device. Before changing anything, check the feature’s purpose and requirements in documentation for your Windows version.

  • Make one change at a time, note the original setting, and restart only if Windows requests it.
  • Do not enable every listed component simply because it appears. Confirm why you need it and how to remove it.
  • On a work- or school-managed device, follow the administrator’s policy.

The available Microsoft documentation supports feature management and explains that Windows interfaces vary by version; it does not verify current IDs for third-party tools that force staged features or establish a blanket safety guarantee for those tools. That is why this guide does not provide feature-ID commands.

How do I undo a Windows feature change?

Remove an optional component

For a component added through Optional features, return to Settings > System > Optional features, find the installed component, and use its remove or uninstall control if one is offered. Labels and availability can vary by Windows release and policy. For a component managed through PowerShell or an organization’s deployment process, use the documented removal procedure for that component and installation rather than guessing a reverse command.

Prepare a restore point for system changes

  1. Search Start for Create a restore point and open the System Properties result.
  2. If System Protection is available but not configured for the system drive, configure it there before the change.
  3. Select Create, give the restore point a clear name, and complete the prompts.

Microsoft says System Protection can safeguard system settings. A restore point captures system files, installed applications, the Windows Registry, and settings; System Restore can roll those categories back to an earlier state. It is not a substitute for a separate, current backup of important personal files. Microsoft’s System Protection and System Restore guidance explains these functions.

Keep a separate recovery plan

Back up important files before using recovery options: recovery can discard changes made after the point you return to. Microsoft lists recovery media among Windows recovery options. A USB recovery drive is optional preparation, not a requirement for enabling an ordinary optional feature; follow the instructions for your device rather than relying on a generic drive-capacity recommendation. See Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows guidance.

Do not confuse classic System Protection restore points with Microsoft’s separate point-in-time restore feature. Its documented timing and storage limits are configuration-specific, so they should not be read as universal settings for restore points on every Windows 11 PC.
