A notice board is the main route, but some quests can begin when you meet the giver directly.
Find and activate a contract
Visit notice boards in towns, villages, and near inns. Examine the posted papers: some add contracts or other quests to the journal, while others do not unlock a quest. Confirm that the contract appears in your journal rather than assuming every note is an active quest. Gamepressure’s notice-board guide describes official-seal notices as the ones that add new quests and contracts.

Boards can also reveal nearby optional map locations. In a large region, one board will not necessarily reveal every point of interest. Gamepressure describes yellow boards as not yet checked and white boards as read, but notices may appear later as the story progresses. Revisit boards when you return to a settlement. You can also speak with a potential quest giver you encounter while exploring; reading a board is not mandatory for every quest trigger.

Track the contract and speak to its issuer
Open the journal, select the contract, and track its objectives. Then meet the named issuer and listen to the details: the conversation provides context and can unlock further dialogue or objectives. A suggested level is a useful warning, not a promise of how difficult the fight will be for every character build or difficulty setting.
#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
For example, the GamesRadar contracts guide lists suggested levels of 2 for Devil by the Well and 10 for Jenny o’ the Woods. Use the journal’s current objective as your guide as the quest develops; different contracts do not all follow the same sequence.
Investigate before you fight
When the objective sends you to a search area, use Witcher Senses to look for highlighted evidence. Depending on the contract, you may need to inspect a scene, follow footprints or blood trails, question witnesses, read a document, or find an item that will draw out the creature. Reaching a monster marker or attacking immediately may leave required investigation steps unfinished.

In Devil by the Well, for instance, Geralt searches the abandoned village, finds a diary and bracelet, and uses the evidence to summon the noonwraith. Jenny o’ the Woods calls for witness accounts, a trail leading to a shallow grave, and a letter. These are quest-specific clues, not a checklist every contract repeats.

Once the investigation identifies the enemy, check that creature’s entry in the in-game Bestiary and choose suitable equipment and tactics. The Devil by the Well walkthrough recommends Yrden against its noonwraith; that advice applies to this encounter, not every contract. Targets and objectives vary, and a contract may involve human enemies or a noncombat resolution.
Rank #3
- If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
Complete the remaining objectives and collect the reward
After the encounter, check the tracked journal objectives again. A contract may still ask you to retrieve something, speak to a survivor, investigate the aftermath, or complete another quest-specific task. When prompted, return to the named issuer to close out the contract and receive the reward. Defeating the target alone does not necessarily collect payment.
Three contract examples
Devil by the Well
- Take the contract from the White Orchard notice board and speak with Odolan.
- Search the abandoned village using Witcher Senses; find and read the evidence, including the diary, and locate the bracelet.
- Use the bracelet to summon the noonwraith. Yrden is recommended for this specific fight.
- Defeat the noonwraith, then return to Odolan to conclude the contract.
Jenny o’ the Woods
- Find the contract on the Midcopse board, then talk to the ealdorman and townsfolk.
- Follow the tracks to the grave and read the letter.
- Go to the haunt at night and fight Jenny; the walkthrough recommends Yrden and dodging her attacks.
- Return to the ealdorman after the fight.
Missing Brother
- Find the contract on the Inn at the Crossroads board and speak with Bruno.
- Search the mine and reach its rear chamber.
- Defeat the arachas and return to Bruno.
These examples illustrate different investigation and combat steps; they are not a complete contract index or a template that every quest follows. The GamesRadar guide covers contracts in the base game and DLC, but its exact revision date is not established here. The Prima Games search result indicates additional Blood and Wine contracts, but does not establish a complete current total. Accordingly, no definitive overall contract count is given.
Which editions include the expansions?
The publisher’s Bandai Namco product page lists platform versions, including PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and describes the Complete Edition as containing the base game, Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine, and additional content. Availability varies by market and platform, so check the listing for your region before buying. Contract locations and availability depend on the content installed; the base-game examples above do not require treating the expansions as part of the same quest.
