The quickest route to WhatsApp’s privacy controls is Settings > Privacy on WhatsApp Web. Select the setting you want to change, then choose an available audience such as Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except… or Nobody. On Android and iPhone, menu names and locations can vary by app version, so use the Android, iOS or Web tab in WhatsApp’s official instructions when you need an exact platform-specific path.
Privacy settings are separate controls: hiding your last seen does not hide your profile photo, changing status visibility does not alter an already-posted status, and disappearing messages do not erase messages sent before the timer was enabled.

How to open WhatsApp privacy settings
WhatsApp Web
- Open WhatsApp Web and sign in.
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Choose the individual control you want to change.
- Select one of the audiences offered for that control and save or confirm if WhatsApp asks.
WhatsApp documents this web path in its Help Center: How to change your privacy settings. The same page provides Android, iOS and Web tabs. Mobile navigation can differ by operating-system version, so do not assume a web label or tap order is identical on a phone.
What the audience labels mean
- Everyone: the broadest audience offered by that particular control, subject to WhatsApp’s product limits.
- My contacts: people saved in your address book.
- My contacts except…: your contacts, with selected people excluded.
- Nobody: no one, where the control offers that choice.
- Only share with…: a selected list used by status privacy rather than the general audience menu.
Not every setting offers every label. Status, for example, has its own audience controls and does not use an Everyone option in the listed status menu.

Which WhatsApp privacy controls can you change?
WhatsApp separates profile visibility, activity information, contact permissions, message behavior and call protections. Change only the control that matches the information you want to limit.

Hide your last seen and online status
Last seen
Open Settings > Privacy > Last seen and online when that label is shown, then choose the audience offered for last-seen information. Use My contacts except… when most contacts may see it but particular people should not. Choose Nobody when you do not want last-seen information shared through that control.
WhatsApp treats this as reciprocal. If you stop sharing your own last seen, WhatsApp says you cannot see other people’s last-seen details. Selecting Everyone also has a practical limit: WhatsApp describes visibility as applying to people you have called or messaged before, or people saved as contacts, rather than promising that every WhatsApp user can see it.

Online visibility is a separate choice within the last-seen and online area. Review it independently if you want to hide the live online indicator but handle last-seen history differently. WhatsApp says that choosing Everyone for online visibility means you are counted in the online total for groups you belong to.
These settings control presence information, not whether you can receive messages. A person can still send you a message unless another control, such as blocking, prevents contact.
Control your profile photo, About text and profile links
In Settings > Privacy, open the entries for Profile photo, About and profile links, then select the audience available for each. Treat them as independent settings: excluding someone from your profile photo does not automatically exclude that person from your About text, status or activity information.

Use the narrowest audience that fits the purpose. For example, a personal photo may be limited to contacts while a public-facing About line may be visible to a broader audience. Check the preview from another account only if you have permission; privacy settings are not a substitute for avoiding sensitive information in the profile itself.
Choose who can see your WhatsApp Status
Status audience choices
WhatsApp provides dedicated status controls documented in How to manage status privacy. The listed choices are:
- My contacts: share with your contacts.
- My contacts except…: share with contacts while excluding selected people.
- Only share with…: share only with selected contacts.
Status does not use an Everyone option in this audience menu. Select the audience before posting when the audience matters most.
Exceptions that override a status audience
A person or group mentioned in a status can see that status even if they are outside the selected audience. Mentioning a group can make the status visible to all members of that group. A person or group mentioned may also be able to reshare the status to their own audience.
A status posted to a group is visible to group members regardless of your status privacy selection. This is why a group post should be treated as a group communication, not as a private status.

If you change the status audience after posting, the new choice does not change who can see a status that was already shared. Delete the existing status and post it again with the intended audience if the original audience was wrong. The setting then governs future status updates.

Turn read receipts on or off
Open Settings > Privacy > Read receipts and switch the control according to your preference. With read receipts disabled, WhatsApp says you cannot see other users’ read receipts either. This is a two-way trade-off, not a one-sided hiding feature.
Group conversations are an exception: WhatsApp says read receipts are still sent in group chats even when the general read-receipts setting is disabled. Do not rely on this switch to conceal every indication that a group message was read.
Limit who can add you to groups
Use the group-privacy control in Settings > Privacy to decide who may add you to groups. Choose the most restrictive audience available if unsolicited group invitations are a problem. The exact labels and intermediate choices can vary between app versions, so read the description shown on your device before confirming.
This setting concerns being added to a group. It does not remove you from groups you already joined and does not conceal the phone numbers of people in a group.
Set the default disappearing-message timer
WhatsApp documents disappearing-message timers of 24 hours, 7 days and 90 days in About disappearing messages. The timer is a default for new chats or messages created after you enable it; it does not rewrite or erase messages that were already sent or received.

WhatsApp notes that a message may be kept. A disappearing timer therefore reduces default retention in the chat but is not a promise that every copy disappears everywhere. For sensitive information, consider whether sending it at all is appropriate.

Silence unknown callers
The privacy controls include an option to silence calls from unknown numbers. This is useful when you want unknown calls to stop interrupting you without blocking every number that is not saved in your contacts.
Silencing is different from blocking. Review the call list and decide whether a particular caller should also be blocked or reported. WhatsApp’s safety guidance is available at How to stay safe on WhatsApp.
Protect calls, links and messaging from unknown senders
Protect IP address in calls
An advanced privacy option can protect your IP address in calls. Call routing may change when this protection is enabled, so check the explanation displayed in your app and decide whether the added network privacy is worth any effect on call behavior.
Disable link previews
Another advanced option disables link previews. Without a preview, WhatsApp does not generate the same visual card for a shared link. This can reduce the information exposed during preview generation, but you lose the convenience of seeing a title or image before opening the link.
Block high volumes of unknown messages
WhatsApp also lists a control for blocking high volumes of messages from unknown accounts. It is intended to reduce automated or bulk unwanted contact, not to replace a block or report action for a specific person.

No. WhatsApp’s official Help Center states: There is no way to hide your phone number when using WhatsApp. This is a product limitation, not a setting you can solve by choosing Nobody for profile or activity information.
WhatsApp also says group members’ phone numbers cannot currently be hidden in groups. Before joining a group, consider who will become able to view your number. If you need to separate identities, use an account and number appropriate for that purpose rather than assuming a privacy switch will conceal the number.
Understand what privacy settings cannot prevent
End-to-end encryption is not recipient control
WhatsApp describes personal messages, calls, status updates and shared location as end-to-end encrypted in Privacy at a Glance. Encryption helps protect content while it is transmitted, but it does not control what an intended recipient does after receiving it.
- A recipient can screenshot a conversation or status.
- A recipient can copy text, save media or photograph the screen.
- A recipient can record audio, video or a call using another device.
WhatsApp’s privacy overview also distinguishes account and usage information that is not end-to-end encrypted in the same way as message content. Treat encryption as protection for communication in transit and storage paths, not as a guarantee of secrecy from participants.

Privacy controls are not anonymity
Hiding last seen, online status or a profile photo reduces exposure of those specific fields. It does not make the account anonymous, remove the phone number from WhatsApp, or prevent someone who already has your number from recognizing the account.
Block or report unwanted contacts
When a person is abusive, fraudulent or persistently unwanted, use WhatsApp’s block and report tools from the relevant chat or contact options. WhatsApp says blocking stops that person’s messages, calls and status updates from reaching you. Reporting gives WhatsApp information about the account or message for review; blocking and reporting are separate actions, so use both when appropriate.
Blocking is more decisive than merely hiding activity information. If the issue is one unwanted caller, blocking that account may be preferable to changing a setting that affects everyone.
What WhatsApp privacy settings are enabled by default?
WhatsApp’s current Help Center article describes these defaults, while warning that an individual account or platform may display them differently:

Defaults are starting points, not guarantees that every account has the same interface. After an app update or account migration, open Privacy and verify each control instead of relying on an old screenshot or remembered setting.
A practical privacy setup for different needs
For a personal account with moderate exposure
- Set profile photo and About to My contacts where available.
- Review last-seen and online visibility separately.
- Use My contacts except… for status when a small number of contacts should be excluded.
- Set a disappearing-message timer only for conversations where temporary retention is useful.
- Silence unknown callers if unsolicited calls are disruptive.
For a business or public-facing number
- Keep only information that customers need in the profile and About fields.
- Use status audiences deliberately, especially before mentioning a person or group.
- Remember that customers who have your number may still identify the account even when activity information is restricted.
- Use block and report for abusive or fraudulent contacts rather than changing every privacy setting.
For high-sensitivity conversations
- Limit profile and status audiences before sharing anything sensitive.
- Consider the 24-hour disappearing-message timer for new conversations, while remembering that messages can be kept or copied.
- Enable call IP-address protection if its trade-offs fit your calls.
- Disable link previews if preview generation is unnecessary.
- Do not send information that must remain secret from the recipient; screenshots and recordings remain possible.
Privacy-setting troubleshooting checklist
- A person still sees an old status: status-audience changes do not affect a status already shared. Delete and repost it with the correct audience.
- A group member sees a status unexpectedly: check whether the status was posted to that group or whether the person or group was mentioned.
- You cannot see someone else’s last seen: your own last-seen or online restriction may trigger WhatsApp’s reciprocity rule, or that person may have restricted theirs.
- Group read receipts still appear: WhatsApp says group-chat receipts continue even when read receipts are disabled.
- An old message remains after enabling disappearing messages: the timer applies to new messages, not messages already sent or received.
- A group member can see your number: WhatsApp does not currently provide a setting to hide phone numbers in groups.
- An unknown call still appears in history: silencing prevents the normal interruption but is not the same as blocking or deleting the call record.
- A privacy option is missing: check that you are viewing the correct Android, iOS or Web instructions and update WhatsApp through your platform’s normal app channel.
Keep your settings reviewable
Privacy preferences are easiest to maintain when you review them after installing WhatsApp on a new phone, joining a large group, changing your audience or installing a major app update. Start at Settings > Privacy, inspect each control rather than changing everything at once, and remember the scope of each choice: some affect future activity, some are reciprocal, and some have group or mention exceptions.
