How to Find and Change the Nginx Port on Linux

Find Nginx’s active HTTP listener, change the intended server block’s listen port, test and reload the configuration, and verify network access.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use nginx -T to inspect the configuration Nginx is using, change the relevant HTTP server block’s listen directive, validate with nginx -t, then reload Nginx. The port is only one part of reachability: firewall rules, container mappings, and network policies may also need updating.

Find the active Nginx listen port

Nginx’s HTTP listen directive sets the address and port on which a server accepts requests. If the directive is absent, the documented default is *:80 when Nginx runs with superuser privileges, or *:8000 otherwise. See the Nginx HTTP core module documentation.

  1. Run nginx -T in the execution context for the Nginx instance you need to inspect. It tests the configuration and prints the configuration files to standard output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Search the output for listen, then inspect the surrounding server { ... } block to identify its purpose and any matching server_name. Treat the output as configuration data; avoid sharing it publicly if it contains sensitive values.

File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
    • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
  3. If the command cannot find the right configuration or appears to inspect a different instance, check how that instance was installed and started. Common configuration roots include /etc/nginx, /usr/local/nginx/conf, and /usr/local/etc/nginx; an alternate configuration file can be selected with -c. The Nginx Beginner’s Guide describes these common locations.

For command details, including -T, -t, and -V, see Nginx command-line parameters. The -V option prints the version, compiler version, and configure parameters, which can help identify a custom build.

Change the port in the intended server block

Edit the listen directive in the HTTP server block that should accept requests on the new port. For a basic change from port 80 to 8080, for example, change listen 80; to listen 8080;. The directive can specify an address, a port, or both; documented examples include listen 127.0.0.1:8000;, listen *:8000;, and listen [::]:8000; in the listen directive reference.

  • Keep any existing address, IPv6, SSL, or default_server parameters that remain necessary. Changing a specific-address listener to an all-interface listener—or the reverse—changes where Nginx accepts connections.

  • Check other relevant server blocks as well. A single edit does not necessarily change every HTTP listener, and it does not change a separate stream configuration.

Understand which server receives requests

Nginx first matches an HTTP request to configured listeners by IP address and port. It then uses the request’s Host header to choose among virtual servers matching that address-port pair. The default server belongs to the pair, not to a server name: an explicitly marked default_server is the default for that pair; if none is marked, the first server configured for it is the default. See How nginx processes a request and the listen directive reference.

Test the configuration and reload Nginx

  1. Run nginx -t using the relevant Nginx binary and execution context. It checks configuration syntax and attempts to open files referenced by the configuration; it does not apply the changed listener.

  2. If the test succeeds, run nginx -s reload for the same Nginx instance. The command-line parameters page documents -s reload as the reload signal.

  3. Check the expected local endpoint and then test from the network location that matters. A successful configuration test does not show that the new port is reachable through the host firewall, container port mapping, load balancer, or cloud security rules; verify those separately.

On reload, the Nginx master process checks the configuration and attempts to apply it, including opening new log files and listening sockets. If it cannot apply the configuration, it rolls back and continues with the old configuration. If it succeeds, it starts new workers and lets old workers finish gracefully. Details are in Controlling nginx.
