Check the stated purity, net precious-metal weight, gold rate, making-charge calculation, hallmarking charge and GST treatment. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) says GST on the retail jewellery sale covered by its FAQ is 3% of the total transaction value, whether making charges are shown separately or not. Hallmarking charges are a separate item; the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) says they do not include making or wastage charges.
What to ask the jeweller to show
There is no single quote layout established by the official guidance cited here. Request the details below so you can understand what the quoted total covers and compare it with the invoice.

- Gold component: the rate used, the purity it applies to, and the net precious-metal weight. Ask whether stones or non-gold components affect any weight shown.
- Making charges: whether they are included, their amount, and how the seller calculates them—for example, as a fixed sum, per gram or a percentage, if that is the seller’s method.
- Hallmarking charge: show it separately from making and wastage charges.
- GST and total: ask whether the quoted total includes GST or whether tax will be added later, and request the taxable transaction total and tax amount.
For hallmarked precious-metal articles, BIS says the sale bill or invoice should mention each article’s description, net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges: BIS Common Consumer Hallmarking FAQs.

1. Confirm what the gold rate covers
Ask whether the displayed rate is for the metal value alone or part of a complete retail price. Confirm the rate date, purity and net precious-metal weight used in the calculation. If stones, other materials or additional charges are included, ask the seller to identify them rather than assuming the quoted weight is all gold.

2. Find out whether making charges are included
Ask for the making-charge amount or calculation basis in writing. A total quote can include making charges without showing them as a separate line, so do not infer that they are absent just because the quote does not list them individually.
CBIC’s retail-jewellery FAQ states: “GST is payable at the rate of 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery, whether the making charge is shown separately or not.” This is the official answer for the retail jewellery sale addressed in that FAQ, not a universal tax calculation for every transaction structure. 3. Keep hallmarking separate from making and wastage
A hallmarking fee is not a substitute for a making-charge line. BIS answers “No” when asked whether hallmark charges include making and wastage charges. Treat these as distinct components when checking a quote.

4. Reconcile the tax and final payable amount
Ask the seller to identify the transaction total on which GST is calculated, the tax amount, and whether that amount is already in the quoted price. The CBIC FAQ’s 3% answer concerns the total transaction value for the retail jewellery sale it describes; do not apply a guessed base if discounts or an unusual transaction structure make the taxable total unclear. For such cases, ask the seller or a qualified tax professional to clarify the treatment.

CBIC also describes a separate 5% GST treatment for job charges in a particular job-work arrangement involving a registered job worker and customer-supplied precious metal returned as finished goods. That is not the retail-jewellery rule above, and should not be used to calculate a consumer’s jewellery bill.
How to compare two jewellery quotes fairly
Compare similar articles using the same inputs. A lower making-charge figure alone does not establish that one quote is cheaper if the purity, weight, gold rate or included items differ.

BIS describes a hallmark as the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number. Ask to see the marks on the article and check that they correspond to the item. BIS says jewellers should have a magnifying glass providing at least 10X magnification available to show the hallmark. A consumer loupe can help you view a small mark, but it does not confirm purity or whether the quote is correct.

For a HUID-bearing piece, use the “Verify HUID” feature through the official BIS Care app information page. BIS says the feature can be used to verify jewellery purity before purchase. Its Consumer Protection page also describes testing jewellery or a sample at a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre on a chargeable basis if you have a purity concern.
Keep the bill and know the remedy
Keep an authentic bill or invoice for hallmarked jewellery. BIS identifies it as necessary for dispute, misuse or complaint redressal. If testing finds hallmarked jewellery below its marked purity, BIS describes a compensation entitlement subject to its stated conditions; consult its Consumer Protection guidance for the applicable process and terms.
