Which Claude privacy controls do what?
Claude’s controls cover separate choices: whether regular conversations may be used for model improvement, whether a chat is saved in history and memory, whether a conversation or account is deleted, and who can access organization data. Choosing the right control depends on what you want to change. The comparison below reflects Anthropic Help Center guidance available on October 9, 2026; interface labels and policies can change.

These are not interchangeable privacy switches. Turning off model improvement does not remove saved chats. Incognito keeps a conversation out of history and memory but does not make it zero-retention. Deleting one chat does not delete the account or its other data.

A useful way to choose is to start with the outcome you need. If you want to change how regular consumer conversations may be used, review the model-improvement setting. If you want a particular new conversation absent from history and Claude memory, start it in incognito before entering anything. If a saved chat is already in history and you want it removed, delete that conversation. If you need a copy before making a change, export first. These actions address different stages and do not automatically trigger one another.

Open Privacy settings on web or desktop
For a personal Free, Pro, or Max account, the documented web and desktop route to data export and shared-chat management is the same:
- Open Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop.
- Click your initials in the lower-left corner.
- Choose Settings, then open Privacy.
- Choose the control you need: Export data for an account copy, or Manage for shared-chat links.
The Privacy page is also where to review the model-improvement privacy setting. Anthropic says users can adjust this setting at any time. The exact current toggle name, position, and step-by-step workflow are not established here, so use the labels currently displayed in your account rather than relying on an assumed switch name or a platform-specific path.
These directions are for personal Free, Pro, and Max accounts. Team and Enterprise accounts are organization-managed, so a control visible to an individual consumer may not describe the organization’s full retention or access rules. If you are signed in through work, ask your administrator which policies apply rather than assuming that a personal-account setting settles the question.
Change model-improvement privacy settings
The model-improvement control concerns whether regular consumer conversations may be used to improve Claude. Anthropic’s consumer guidance directs users to its current instructions for changing the setting and says it can be adjusted at any time. Since the available help guidance does not establish the current toggle-by-toggle steps, use Settings > Privacy and follow the instructions shown there.
Changing this control is not the same thing as deleting old conversations. A regular conversation remains a saved chat unless you separately delete it. Likewise, deleting a conversation is a separate action from changing the setting for model improvement. If your aim is to remove a particular chat from the account’s visible history, use the conversation’s Delete control; do not assume a model-improvement preference erases stored conversations.
What the setting does not cover
Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. Anthropic says conversations flagged by safety classifiers may still be used for internal purposes such as improving trust-and-safety models, detecting harmful content, enforcing policies, or advancing safety research. Therefore, an improvement setting is not a promise that every interaction is excluded from every internal safety process.
Anthropic advises caution with sensitive information such as financial data, health records, passwords, and confidential documents. A privacy setting does not make it wise to submit information you do not need Claude to process.

Before pasting material, consider whether Claude needs the full record, whether identifying details can be omitted, and whether the chat belongs to an organization with its own rules. The consumer guidance specifically calls out financial information, health records, passwords, and confidential documents as categories to treat carefully.

Start an incognito chat when you do not want a conversation in history
Incognito is intended for a temporary chat that will not be saved to chat history or Claude memory. On the standard interface, it is available outside a project:
- Start a new chat that is not inside a project.
- Select the ghost icon in the upper-right corner.
- Check that the interface labels the conversation Incognito chat before entering information.
Incognito is unavailable inside projects. On the newer Claude experience, the Help Center says incognito opens in the previous chat experience, where Claude cannot create files or run code. That may affect which tasks you can complete in the chat; interface behavior can change over time.
Check the label before typing, especially if you started from a project or navigated through a different Claude experience. The documented flow is to start a new chat outside a project and then select the ghost icon. If you need a project conversation, file creation, or code execution, incognito may not be suitable because it is not available inside projects and the newer experience routes it to the previous chat interface without those capabilities.

Know the retention and recovery limits
Anthropic’s help article states that incognito chats are retained for 30 days by default. An Enterprise organization may set a longer custom retention period. The fact that a chat is absent from history and memory therefore does not mean it is immediately erased from all systems.
Once you close an incognito chat, you cannot reopen it or turn it into a regular saved conversation. If you need to refer to the conversation later, incognito may not suit that task.
Incognito is therefore a choice about saving and use for improvement, not a way to create a recoverable private archive. It is not saved to history or Claude memory, it is not used to improve Claude under the stated consumer guidance, and it is retained for a limited period rather than erased immediately. Safety-flagged conversations may still be handled for internal trust-and-safety purposes. If you need a conversation available later, use a regular saved chat and manage it with the appropriate settings instead.
Export your Claude data before deleting anything important
The export feature is available for personal Free, Pro, and Max accounts on the web app and Claude Desktop; the iOS and Android apps cannot initiate an export. The export includes conversation data and account user information.

- Select Settings > Privacy.
- Click Export data and follow the prompts.
- Watch your email for the download link and download the file before the link expires.
The email download link expires 24 hours after delivery. Request the export when you can retrieve it promptly, and complete the download before proceeding with permanent account deletion if you want to keep a copy. If the export option is not available in your mobile app, use the web app or desktop app instead.

Export gives you a copy; it does not itself delete chats, disable model improvement, or remove a shared link. Plan the sequence around your goal: request the export, download it while the link is still active, and then take any separate deletion or account action you intend. Because the link expires after 24 hours, avoid requesting it when you cannot check the email and retrieve the file in time.
Review or disable shared-chat links
A shared chat is a snapshot accessible to anyone who has its public link. In Settings > Privacy, use Manage for shared chats to review links and unshare a snapshot. If you change visibility to Private, the link no longer provides direct access.
For Team or Enterprise users, the sharing guide says a chat can be shared only with members of the same organization. This is distinct from a personal public link: check the visibility shown for the particular conversation and use the management control to change access when needed.
When reviewing links, focus on whether a conversation has been shared and who the visibility setting allows to open it. A public link is not limited to a specific recipient: anyone with that link can see the snapshot. If that is no longer appropriate, use Manage to unshare the snapshot or set it to Private. For organization users, the available audience is described differently: sharing is limited to members of the same organization. Do not assume that changing a chat’s visibility also deletes the conversation from your own history.
Delete a single conversation
On the web, you can remove a saved conversation from your visible history as follows:
- Locate the conversation in the left sidebar or under Chats and tasks.
- Open the conversation’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Delete, then confirm.
The help article also describes multi-select deletion and steps in the mobile apps, but the exact mobile labels can vary by platform and interface version. Follow the current prompts in your app if you are deleting there.
Deletion removes the conversation from visible history immediately; Anthropic states that backend deletion occurs within 30 days. Other associated account data, including projects and account information, remains unless you delete it separately or delete the account. Deleting a conversation is not the same as disabling model improvement or deleting all of your data.
The two timing points matter: the chat disappears from what you can see in history as soon as you delete it, while the stated backend removal period is within 30 days. Do not interpret immediate disappearance in the interface as immediate removal from every system. Conversely, deleting one conversation does not automatically wipe unrelated project data or account information. If your aim is full account removal, use the account-deletion process instead.

Delete your Claude account permanently
Account deletion removes access to conversations, projects, and account information, and cannot be reversed. Export data first if you need a copy. The documented web route is:
- Open the account menu and choose Settings, or go directly to Settings > Account.
- Select Delete account.
- Follow the prompts to confirm deletion.
Mobile deletion routes differ by platform; use Anthropic’s current account-deletion instructions for the app you use rather than assuming the web labels match.
Account deletion is a different decision from removing a chat from the sidebar. It removes access to conversations, projects, and account information, and Anthropic says it is permanent and unrecoverable. If there is any data you want to retain, get the export and download it before confirming. Do not begin account deletion expecting that you can later restore the account or retrieve chats from it.
If you subscribe to Pro or Max
Anthropic instructs Pro and Max subscribers to cancel from Billing settings and wait until the current subscription period ends before deleting the account. Account deletion itself is permanent, so complete any export and subscription steps before confirming it.
A sensible order for a Pro or Max subscriber is to decide what information to keep, request and download an export if needed, cancel the subscription in Billing, wait until the existing subscription period has ended, and then follow the account-deletion prompts. The help guidance specifies that wait; do not assume deleting the account is a substitute for the cancellation and timing steps.

Team and Enterprise data is governed differently from an individual consumer account. Anthropic describes the customer organization as the controller of submitted user data and Anthropic as its processor. Anthropic says it processes that data on the customer’s instructions to provide Claude. The customer organization may access or export user data, so an individual user should ask the organization administrator how access, retention, and account policies apply.
Anthropic says commercial product data is not used to train its models unless the customer elects to participate in the Development Partner Program. This is a commercial-product statement; do not assume that a personal account’s controls or consumer policy wording automatically applies to an organization-managed account.
If you need to know who at your workplace can access a conversation, how long organization data is retained, or how a request to delete data is handled, the practical next step is to ask the administrator. The organization is the customer controlling submitted data and may access or export it. A user-facing Claude control cannot answer every organization-specific question, and the organization’s own policies may determine what applies.
Covered-model retention is a separate, scoped policy
Anthropic’s September 2026 covered-model guidance says designated commercial Covered Models have at least 30 days of prompt and completion retention by default, subject to safety-investigation and legal exceptions; it also says zero data retention (ZDR) is unavailable in specified covered-model contexts. A separate article says this change does not affect consumer Free, Pro, and Max use of Claude on web, desktop, mobile, or Claude Code, because those surfaces already retain inputs and outputs under consumer practices.
This rule is limited to designated commercial Covered Models and specified contexts. It should not be generalized to every Claude conversation or treated as a universal retention period for all Team and Enterprise use. Organization administrators can clarify which models, services, and retention terms apply.
The distinction is important if you have heard about zero data retention or the covered-model change. The September 2026 guidance concerns designated commercial models and specified contexts; it does not establish one universal policy for every service or plan. The separate clarification explicitly says it does not change consumer Free, Pro, and Max use across Claude web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code. For an organization-managed account, verify the models and terms in use with the administrator rather than applying a consumer rule or a scoped commercial rule by assumption.

- Keep a copy of account information and conversations: request an export in Settings > Privacy on web or desktop, then download it within 24 hours of receiving the email link.
- Keep a chat out of history and memory: start it in incognito, understanding the stated default 30-day retention and the inability to reopen it after closing.
- Remove one saved chat: delete it from history; the stated backend deletion window is within 30 days, while other account data remains.
- Stop direct access through a shared link: manage the shared chat in Privacy settings and unshare it or set visibility to Private.
- Remove your personal account: export first if needed; Pro and Max subscribers should cancel and wait for the paid period to end, then confirm permanent account deletion.
- Understand organization access or retention: ask your Team or Enterprise administrator, because the organization controls submitted data and may access or export it.
Before acting, match the control to the specific information you want to change. Export is for keeping a copy; unsharing changes direct access to a snapshot; model-improvement settings govern a different use of regular consumer conversations; incognito affects history and memory for a new chat; chat deletion removes one saved conversation; and account deletion is the permanent, broadest action. If you are unsure which account type you are using, establish whether it is personal or organization-managed before relying on a setting.
