How to Extend Battery Life on an Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet

Lower brightness, shorten screen sleep, check background apps, and use supported power-saving settings to improve time between charges on an Alexa-enabled Fire HD 8.

To get more time between charges, start with the Fire tablet’s display: lower brightness and shorten the screen-sleep timer. Then check background apps, enable Low Power Mode or Smart Suspend if your model supports them, and switch off Alexa Hands-Free only if you do not use it. “Amazon Alexa Tablet 8” does not identify a specific generation, so check your tablet’s model and expect some menu names and features to vary by Fire OS version.

First, identify which Fire tablet you have

Fire HD 8 models have appeared in multiple generations, and not every generation has the same features or settings. The advice below is for an Alexa-enabled Amazon Fire HD 8, but confirm the model before relying on a particular menu or feature. If your tablet’s labels differ, look for the equivalent display, battery, or connectivity setting rather than assuming the option is missing.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Battery life also depends on how you use the tablet. A bright screen that stays awake, frequent network activity, or sustained use can mean fewer hours between charges than lighter use. A setting change can reduce avoidable consumption, but there is no single adjustment that guarantees a particular runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before changing settings, note what you mean by “battery life.” If the tablet runs down while you are actively reading or watching, screen brightness and screen-on time are useful places to start. If the charge drops noticeably while the tablet is idle, background activity and connectivity are more relevant. This distinction helps you test one or two changes that fit the problem instead of disabling features you want.

Reduce how much power the display uses

Lower brightness to a comfortable level

The display is a practical place to begin because its brightness and time awake are directly under your control. Lower the brightness until the screen remains comfortable to read in your usual environment. You do not need to make it difficult to see; the aim is to avoid using more brightness than the situation requires.

Think about where you use the tablet. A brightness level that is comfortable in a bright room may be unnecessarily high in a dim one. Adjust it when your surroundings change, rather than forcing yourself to read an uncomfortable screen in pursuit of a longer charge. If you often use the tablet for books, browsing, or other tasks that keep the display on for a long stretch, a modest reduction can also make the device more comfortable to use.

Shorten the screen-sleep timer

A tablet left showing a screen while you are not looking at it continues to use power. Set it to sleep sooner after you stop interacting with it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Display or Display & Sounds.
  3. Choose Display Sleep or Sleep.
  4. Select a shorter duration that still suits the way you read or watch content.

The exact labels can vary by Fire OS version. A shorter timer is especially useful if you often put the tablet down without manually turning off the screen; choose a duration that will not interrupt something you are actively using.

For example, if you pause often while reading, an extremely short timeout could put the display to sleep before you are ready. If the tablet is usually set aside between tasks, a shorter timeout can prevent it from staying lit during those idle pauses. There is no universally best duration: choose a setting that reduces unattended screen time without disrupting the way you use the device.

Check background apps and keep the software current

Amazon’s general Fire tablet guidance recommends force-closing apps running in the background and checking that the tablet has the latest software. Treat these as sensible checks, not as guaranteed fixes or a promise of a specific battery-life improvement.

  • Close apps you are finished with. If an app appears to be active when you no longer need it, close it using the tablet’s normal app controls. There is no need to repeatedly force-close every app as a routine; start with apps you know you have left running or that may be doing unwanted background work.
  • Check for software updates. Use the tablet’s available software-update controls and install an update if one is offered. Menu wording can vary, so use the update option on your device rather than relying on a path for a different generation.
  • Reassess after the change. Use the tablet normally and see whether the drain changes. Closing an app or updating software may help with a particular situation, but neither establishes that the battery itself is defective.

These checks are most useful when battery use changed after you began using a particular app or after a period when several apps were left open. Close what you are done with, then observe the tablet during your usual activities. Avoid treating a long list of open apps as proof that every one is consuming substantial power; the available guidance recommends closing background apps but does not identify a specific app or quantify a typical saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keeping software current is also a straightforward maintenance step, but do not expect an update to produce a measurable improvement in every case. It is one reasonable item to rule out alongside display settings and app activity. If the tablet remains warm, loses charge quickly, or behaves unusually, those observations can help when you describe the issue to Amazon support, but they do not on their own establish a particular fault.

Use Low Power Mode when supported

Amazon documents Low Power Mode for supported Fire tablets, with guidance covering Fire tablets of 8th generation or newer. Check your model and software because availability and wording may differ. On a supported tablet, open Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode to enable it. Amazon’s instructions also describe setting Automatic Low Power Mode to switch the mode on when the battery reaches a percentage you choose.

Manual activation is useful when you know you will need the remaining charge to last longer. Automatic activation is useful if you want the tablet to apply its power-saving mode at a chosen battery level without waiting for you to turn it on. The threshold is your decision; select one that fits when you expect to have access to a charger. If you do not see these options, check the model and software rather than assuming every Fire HD 8 has them.

  • Do more with Alexa - Ask Alexa to listen to music, get news and weather, update shopping lists, and set reminders. Control your smart home, or ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family with apps like Zoom.

Use the automatic option as a convenience, not as a promise that the tablet will reach a particular number of hours. Choosing a higher trigger means the mode can turn on earlier, leaving more of the remaining charge under the mode; choosing a lower trigger means it waits longer. Pick a threshold according to how you use the tablet and when you can usually recharge. If you only want to conserve power on occasional trips or long days away from an outlet, manual activation may be simpler.

When the setting is unavailable, do not assume that a hidden menu or a different device is required. The support instructions apply to supported models and software. Confirm your generation and look for the equivalent battery setting on the tablet; if the feature is absent, use the other available changes, especially brightness, timeout, and connectivity choices.

Use Smart Suspend if you do not need a constant connection

Amazon recommends Smart Suspend as a way for the tablet to disconnect from the network when it is not in use. This is worth considering if you do not need background connectivity while the tablet is idle. Network behavior can affect notifications and other background functions, so weigh those needs against standby runtime rather than enabling a disconnect without considering what you rely on.

Smart Suspend is most relevant when the tablet spends idle periods connected but you do not need it to remain reachable for background activity. If you depend on notifications or other connected functions, check how they behave with the setting before making it your normal choice. The exact controls may vary by model and Fire OS version.

In practice, decide what you expect the tablet to do while it is asleep. If you want it to remain connected for notifications or other background functions, a network disconnect may not suit that preference. If it mostly sits idle until you pick it up and you do not need those functions in the meantime, Smart Suspend is a reasonable setting to try. Compare the tablet’s standby behavior with and without the feature under similar conditions, rather than judging from a single period when your use may have been different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a tradeoff between idle connectivity and the amount of background activity you want, not a way to improve performance during every active task. Keep the setting that fits your priorities. There is no need to turn off connectivity indiscriminately if notifications or other connected features matter to you.

Decide whether Alexa Hands-Free is worth keeping on

Alexa Hands-Free is supported on Fire HD 8 (8th, 10th, and 12th generations) and Fire HD 8 Plus (10th and 12th generations). Amazon says its toggle is available in Quick Actions on the home screen. If you do not use hands-free Alexa, you can turn it off there as an experiment and see whether your own standby drain changes.

Amazon’s support guidance does not quantify how much power Hands-Free uses or how much disabling it saves. It is therefore an optional test for people who do not need the feature, not a proven or measured battery-life fix. If you use voice access, keep the feature enabled and focus on the other settings instead.

Consider your actual routine before changing it. If you regularly use hands-free voice access, turning it off would trade away a feature you value for an unknown battery effect. If you never use it, disabling it temporarily is a low-commitment way to see whether idle drain changes on your own tablet. Keep your other settings and usage as consistent as possible while comparing, so you can tell whether the change seems relevant to your situation.

Work out whether the drain is unusual

If the tablet still loses charge quickly after you have adjusted the settings that fit your use, look for clues before assuming the cause. Some Fire tablets provide a battery-usage screen; review it if available to see which apps or activity account for use. The information can help you decide whether an app deserves attention, but it does not by itself diagnose battery condition.

Separate active-use drain from standby drain. If charge falls mainly while you are reading, watching, or browsing, revisit brightness and how long the screen remains on. If it falls while the tablet is not being used, check background apps and consider whether Smart Suspend is appropriate for your needs. These are useful comparisons because they point toward different settings, but they are not a diagnostic test of the battery.

  1. Close background apps you do not need.
  2. Restart the tablet after closing them.
  3. Use it in your normal way and watch whether the problem continues.
  4. If drain remains severe, contact Amazon support for model-specific guidance.

When reviewing battery usage, look for a pattern rather than making a decision from one entry alone. If a particular app appears prominent and you have finished using it, close it and see whether the pattern changes. If no battery-usage screen is available, continue with the other basic checks; the absence of that screen does not prove a battery problem.

Restarting after closing unwanted background apps is a reasonable next step if the problem persists. Then observe the tablet in normal use. Try not to change every setting at once: if you alter brightness, timeout, connectivity, and voice access together, you will have a harder time identifying which change helped or which tradeoff caused a notification or other function to behave differently.

The exact generation, software version, and battery condition matter when diagnosing persistent drain. Without those details, there is no basis to conclude that the battery has failed or to recommend a replacement part. A settings-first check and device-specific support are more appropriate than buying a battery or repair tool on guesswork. If drain remains severe after these checks, contact Amazon support and provide the model and the steps you have already tried.

What to expect from the stated battery-life figure

In its 2024 announcement of the Fire HD 8 lineup, Amazon stated battery life of up to 13 hours. That is the manufacturer’s claim for the announced lineup, not an independent test result or a guarantee for every Fire HD 8 generation, task, or use pattern. It should not be treated as a target that every owner will achieve, especially when comparing devices or usage conditions that are not specified.

The phrase “up to” matters: it describes Amazon’s stated maximum for the announced lineup, not a minimum runtime for every owner. Your experience depends on use, including how long the screen is on, brightness, and background connectivity. Older generations may differ, and the number should not be used to diagnose whether a particular tablet’s battery is healthy. It is best understood as a manufacturer figure for that announcement, not a promise that a settings change will deliver the same result.

Settings changes versus buying accessories

The steps here use built-in settings; the available guidance does not establish a purchase as necessary to improve runtime per charge. A power bank can provide extra charges when you are away from an outlet, but it does not make the tablet last longer on one charge. Likewise, safe-charging advice is about charging safely, not extending runtime per charge. Start with the tablet’s display, power-saving, app, and connectivity settings before considering any purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no product comparison to make for improving runtime per charge: the relevant first options are settings already on the tablet. Buying a power bank addresses a different need—having energy available to recharge when you are away from an outlet. It may be convenient for travel, but it does not reduce the tablet’s consumption or increase the time between charges from the tablet’s own battery.

Similarly, charging guidance should not be confused with runtime guidance. Amazon’s safety advice for the 10th-generation Fire HD 8 recommends the included or approved charging cable with a compatible charger. That is safe-charging information, not evidence that a different charger, cable, replacement battery, or repair tool will improve runtime. If the battery seems unusually weak, seek model-specific support rather than buying parts without a diagnosis.

A practical order for making changes

  1. Lower brightness to a comfortable level and shorten the screen-sleep duration.
  2. Close apps you are not using and check for an available software update.
  3. Enable Low Power Mode or configure Automatic Low Power Mode if the feature is available on your tablet.
  4. Try Smart Suspend if you can accept reduced network activity while the tablet is idle.
  5. Turn off Alexa Hands-Free only if you do not use it, then observe whether your own standby drain changes.
  6. If the drain remains severe, review battery usage if available, restart the tablet, and contact Amazon support.

For a useful comparison, make one change at a time and observe the tablet through the kind of use that prompted the concern. Screen-on time, network and background connectivity, and whether you rely on Alexa Hands-Free or notifications are the most relevant axes for deciding which settings to keep. There is no need to measure a laboratory-style result; the goal is to find out whether a change makes a practical difference in your routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I extend battery life on a Fire tablet?

Start by lowering the screen brightness to a comfortable level and shortening the screen-sleep timer. Then close background apps you no longer need, check for a software update, and use Low Power Mode or Smart Suspend if your model supports them and their tradeoffs suit you.

Why is my Fire HD 8 battery draining so fast?

A bright screen that stays on, sustained active use, network activity, and background apps can all contribute to shorter time between charges. If the drain is unusual, check battery usage if your tablet offers it, close unwanted background apps, restart, and contact Amazon support if severe drain continues. These signs alone do not establish that the battery has failed.

How do I stop my Fire tablet from draining battery when not in use?

Shorten the screen-sleep timer so the display does not remain on after you set the tablet down. Close apps you no longer need and consider Smart Suspend if you do not require background connectivity while idle. Keep in mind that network disconnection may affect notifications or other background functions.

Where is Low Power Mode on a Fire HD 8?

On supported devices, Amazon documents the path Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. Automatic Low Power Mode can also be configured to turn on at a battery percentage you choose. Availability and wording depend on the tablet model and software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning off Alexa Hands-Free save battery?

Amazon’s support guidance does not quantify the power use or savings. If you do not use hands-free Alexa, you can switch it off in Quick Actions and see whether your own standby drain changes; it is an experiment, not a guaranteed fix.

Is Amazon’s “up to 13 hours” claim a guarantee for my tablet?

No. Amazon stated up to 13 hours for the Fire HD 8 lineup in its 2024 announcement. It is a manufacturer claim for that announced lineup, not a guarantee for every generation or usage pattern.

Should I buy a power bank or replacement battery to improve runtime?

A power bank can provide extra charges away from an outlet, but it does not extend runtime per charge. The supported first steps are built-in settings. Do not assume the battery needs replacement; contact Amazon support for model-specific guidance if drain remains severe.

The Bottom Line

Start with comfortable brightness and a shorter screen timeout, then check background apps and software. Use Low Power Mode and Smart Suspend only where supported and compatible with the notifications and connected features you need. Treat disabling Alexa Hands-Free as an optional test, not a proven fix; if severe drain persists, review battery usage if available and contact Amazon support rather than guessing at a replacement.
