How to Find an Active Directory Attribute’s LDAPDisplayName

Learn how to identify an Active Directory attribute’s exact LDAPDisplayName in the live schema and avoid confusing it with other schema names.

Use the attribute’s lDAPDisplayName value in LDAP queries, filters, and scripts. To identify it reliably, look up the property in the Active Directory schema of the domain you are querying: each attribute is defined by an attributeSchema object, and its lDAPDisplayName is the name LDAP clients use to read and write that attribute.

Find the LDAPDisplayName in the domain schema

Active Directory’s schema formally defines the object classes and attributes available in a forest. Microsoft documents that each attribute is represented by an attributeSchema object in the schema container. To map a friendly property label to the LDAP name, inspect those schema objects in the live domain and compare their administrative labels or descriptions with the property you need.

  1. Read RootDSE to determine the domain’s schema naming context.
  2. Search that naming context for objects whose objectClass is attributeSchema.
  3. For likely matches, inspect lDAPDisplayName, adminDisplayName, cn, schemaIDGUID, syntax, range, and whether the attribute is single- or multi-valued.
  4. Match the administrator-facing label or schema description to the intended property, then copy the exact lDAPDisplayName value into the LDAP filter, query, or script.

Microsoft describes the schema and attribute definitions in its Active Directory Schema documentation and Characteristics of Attributes.

Tell the schema names apart

Several fields on an attributeSchema object may look like names, but they serve different purposes.

Field What it identifies When it matters
lDAPDisplayName The name LDAP clients use to read and write the attribute. It is unique in the schema. Use this exact value in ordinary LDAP reads, writes, filters, and queries.
adminDisplayName An administrative display label. Useful when matching a property to a name shown to administrators; it is not the LDAP query name.
cn The schema object’s common name and naming value (RDN). Identifies the schema object; it is not necessarily the target attribute’s LDAP name.
schemaIDGUID A binary GUID identifying the attribute for security descriptor operations. Relevant to security descriptor work, not a substitute for the LDAP attribute name in routine reads.
Syntax, range, and cardinality The attribute’s data type and value constraints, including whether it is single- or multi-valued. Use these to check how the attribute behaves, rather than to identify its LDAP name.

Microsoft’s attribute characteristics reference describes these schema properties. The protocol specification also states that lDAPDisplayName is the LDAP-client name and is unique in the schema: MS-ADTS specification.

Verify against the directory you will query

A base Windows schema reference may not list attributes added by Exchange, another application, or a custom schema extension. The live domain’s schema is the reliable source for what that directory defines. Confirm the result in the same environment your LDAP query or script will use, especially when working with extended or custom attributes.

Use the exact value in LDAP

Once you have matched the property, use the returned lDAPDisplayName exactly as shown. Friendly administrative labels help locate an attribute, but they are not a safe replacement in LDAP syntax. Check the schema’s syntax, range, and cardinality as well if your code depends on the attribute’s value type or number of values.
