How AI Gesture Recognition Powers a Webcam Rock-Paper-Scissors Game

A webcam RPS game detects hand landmarks, classifies a pose, then uses ordinary game logic to determine the winner. Here’s how the pipeline and customization work.

A webcam rock-paper-scissors game works by turning video frames into hand-pose labels, then applying the game’s rules to those labels. MediaPipe can process still images, recorded video, or live camera input and return hand landmarks, handedness, and gesture categories. The model recognizes a pose; separate game logic decides whether rock, paper, or scissors wins.

How gesture recognition becomes a game move

The system is a sequence of distinct stages:

  1. Capture: A camera supplies an image or video frame. For live webcam play, a built-in camera is enough if it provides usable frames; a separate USB webcam is optional. A public example opens the default webcam with OpenCV (NTU ARL’s RPS example).
  2. Find the hand: A hand-landmark model locates the hand and estimates its geometry. MediaPipe’s documentation describes 21 hand-knuckle coordinates and a model bundle with a hand-landmark component followed by gesture classification (Google AI Edge Gesture Recognizer guide).
  3. Classify the pose: The recognizer maps hand geometry to a gesture category and provides a score. This is a prediction, not certainty; confidence thresholds can be configured.
  4. Apply the rules: Game code interprets the recognized label as rock, paper, or scissors and compares it with the opponent’s move. The classifier does not determine the winner.
  5. Update the display: The game shows the move and result, then waits for the next valid round.

The same recognition task can accept a still image, decoded video, or live video. A still image is useful for trying a pose without building a real-time loop; a camera stream is needed for interactive play.

Choosing a recognition approach

Approach What it does When it fits
Pretrained gesture recognizer Uses a documented task and model to return gesture categories and hand data. A straightforward starting point for a prototype.
Custom gesture model Trains a recognizer on examples for the labels and poses you need. Useful when you want to tailor categories or examples to your game.
Landmarks plus geometry rules Tracks hand landmarks, then applies rules such as angles to classify poses. An alternative implementation path; a public example combines MediaPipe tracking, angle-based classification, and OpenCV display (NTU ARL example).

These documented approaches do not establish that one is more accurate than another. Test the method you choose on the intended camera and users.

Customizing the recognizer for rock-paper-scissors

MediaPipe’s customization guide includes a rock-paper-scissors sample dataset and an end-to-end Model Maker example. The image-folder dataset is organized by label, and the sample includes none for gestures outside the named game poses. That unknown category matters: a system should not force every unclear or unrelated hand pose into rock, paper, or scissors.

  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

The guide’s workflow identifies hand landmarks with a prepackaged hand detector before model training. Google’s developer blog also demonstrates loading and splitting data, training a custom recognizer, evaluating it on test data, and exporting a model asset bundle (Google Developers Blog). This is a workflow example, not a guarantee that a small or unrepresentative dataset will work reliably.

Google AI Edge documentation says the hand-landmark model was trained using approximately 30,000 real-world images plus rendered synthetic hand models over varied backgrounds. That figure describes landmark-model training data, not rock-paper-scissors accuracy.

Handling uncertainty and testing real conditions

For a usable game, decide what happens when the recognizer is unsure. Use a confidence threshold and an unknown/none result so the game can wait for a clearer pose rather than silently accepting a questionable move. The recognizer documentation describes score thresholds and hand-presence confidence settings.

Image quality, lighting, hand occlusion, camera framing, and the variety of training examples can affect recognition in practice. No general accuracy percentage across users, cameras, backgrounds, or devices is established by the cited documentation. If you publish a performance figure, test with representative people and the intended hardware, describe the lighting and camera setup, and state how you defined a correct prediction. Avoid treating a result from one demo as a general benchmark.

What you need to play

Live webcam play needs a camera, but it does not require a separate USB device when a suitable built-in camera is available. The cited example uses a default webcam; it does not recommend particular camera models. For software development, the public example illustrates a Python, MediaPipe, and OpenCV route, while MediaPipe’s guides document both ready-made recognition and model customization.

A 2025 IEEE conference abstract describes another implementation using MediaPipe, OpenCV, and camera video (IEEE Xplore, “Gesture Showdown: Rock Paper Scissors with AI Vision”). It is evidence that this combination has been used in a project, not independent validation of its performance.
