What counts as alternative research funding?
The term depends on what you are trying to move beyond. It can include institutional seed funds, fellowships, pilot grants, training support, foundations and trusts, nonprofits, community organizations, research partnerships, or a different public funder. The University of Regina’s alternative-funding guidance, for example, identifies private foundations and trusts, community and nongovernmental organizations, and nonprofit associations as possible sponsors.

These routes are not interchangeable. A student stipend, an exploratory study, a piece of equipment, project staff, and a multi-institution partnership call for different award types and often different applicants. Institutional or block funding may support a university or a specified student route rather than provide money that an individual researcher can apply for directly.

1. Define the need before searching
Write down your research question, discipline, methods, country, host institution, career stage, collaborators and approximate funding need. Specify what the money must cover: for example, a student stipend, pilot data, staff time, equipment, travel, infrastructure or partnership costs. This turns a broad search for “research grants” into a search for relevant mechanisms.

2. Contact your research office or subject facilitator
Ask the grants or research office at your host institution about internal seed funding, central calls, foundation opportunities, research alerts, required approvals, cost recovery and whether the institution must submit the application. If your university offers subject-area facilitators, ask for help identifying funders in your field. The University of Regina describes alerts, workshops and facilitators as part of its research-office support.
3. Search official portals and funder pages
Filter by research area, award purpose, applicant type, host requirements, geography and deadline. The U.S. National Science Foundation says active opportunities can be searched by keyword, directorate, division and other criteria. Its calls may appear as program descriptions, announcements, solicitations or broad agency announcements. The NSF states: “The U.S. National Science Foundation offers hundreds of funding opportunities — including grants, cooperative agreements and fellowships — that support research and education across science and engineering.” That describes NSF’s range, not the availability of a particular open call.

In the UK, UKRI’s funding modes distinguish applicant-led opportunities from those aimed at a narrower funder-defined remit. Its listed funding types include research grants, fellowships, career development, infrastructure, partnerships, training and travel. For biomedical research, NIH describes independent project awards as well as limited-duration support for pilot or feasibility work, preliminary data, small self-contained projects and exploratory or developmental research.

Depending on your project, investigate institutional funding, fellowships, career-development awards, training support, small exploratory grants and partnerships alongside standard public grants. Country-specific structures matter. In Australia, the Research Support Program helps eligible higher education providers meet systemic research costs, while the Research Training Program supports research-degree students through scholarships. Singapore’s National Research Foundation offers competitive research funding and fellowships. Neither example means that every researcher can apply personally; check the relevant program’s eligibility and route through your institution.

Other possible sponsors include foundations, trusts, community organizations, nonprofits and companies with aligned research interests. NSF describes cross-sector partnerships involving universities, industry, nonprofits and government. Treat company support as a negotiated research partnership, not automatically as an unrestricted grant: discuss contributions, deliverables, publication rights, intellectual property, conflicts of interest and institutional policies with your research office.
Some calls specify possible non-government contributions. For example, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation’s ACE call lists eligible sources that can include industry, alumni donations, philanthropic foundations, CSR funds, institutional sources and private entities. Those conditions apply to that call; they are not a general matching-fund rule for India or other schemes.
Screen each opportunity before drafting
A program page shows that a funding route exists; the live call or notice controls its current status, deadline, eligibility and terms. Before writing a proposal, record the following for each candidate:

- Fit: Does the sponsor’s mission and the call’s remit match the research question and methods?
- Eligibility: Who may apply, and must the applicant be employed by or affiliated with an eligible host? Are there career-stage, country or collaborator restrictions?
- Purpose and scale: Is the award designed for a pilot, training, a fellowship, a full project or a partnership? Does its duration and available amount meet the need?
- Budget rules: Which direct and indirect costs are allowed? Is cost recovery limited, or is a university or partner contribution required?
- Process: What is the deadline and submission portal? Are institutional approvals, partner documents or letters required? Are resubmissions allowed?
- Obligations: Check review criteria, reporting, open-access expectations, data terms, intellectual-property provisions and publication conditions.
Eligibility is scheme-specific. Grants.gov notes that most federal opportunities on its portal are for organizations and that few are open to individuals; its guidance directs applicants to the funding notice for the controlling requirements. Being able to see a listing does not establish that you or your institution qualify.

Plan the application with your institution
Work backward from the deadline, allowing time for internal review, budget costing and any required approvals. Match the proposal to the call’s remit, justify resources clearly, and request collaborator permissions and documents early. Confirm submission responsibilities: NSF says proposals are usually submitted officially by the proposer’s employing organization, while UKRI’s MRC guidance assigns formal responsibilities to the applying research organization.
Cost rules also vary. The MRC/UKRI application and policy guide says the grants and fellowships covered by that guidance typically fund 80% of full economic cost, with the applying organization responsible for finding the balance. Do not assume that rate applies to every UKRI call or to funding in another country. For a covered UKRI/MRC application, the organization’s submission confirms formal acceptance and eligibility; some applicants also need an eligible employment contract for the grant duration, subject to the guide’s stated exceptions.

These examples show why location changes the search; they are not a universal directory of open opportunities.

What not to assume
- A sponsor’s existence does not mean a relevant call is open now; verify the live notice and deadline.
- A national or institutional allocation is not automatically an award an individual researcher can apply for.
- Do not treat crowdfunding as dependable: the official sources cited here do not establish broad success rates or general suitability.
- Do not compare routes by presumed ease or likelihood of success unless the funder publishes evidence that supports the comparison.
