What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose an online trading platform by matching its investments, services, and account rules to your needs, then comparing its full costs, order handling, security, and the firm’s background. A zero-commission headline alone does not tell you what an account will cost or whether the platform fits your investing workflow.
This guide uses U.S. SEC, Investor.gov, FINRA, and SIPC guidance available October 4, 2026. Fees, features, and rules vary by broker and can change, so verify current documents before opening an account.

Start with the account and service you need
Before comparing brands, write down what you expect to do with the account. FINRA’s broker-selection guidance points investors to their goals, planned investment amount, desired level of guidance, costs, and the range of products and services offered. Those criteria are more useful than choosing a platform by popularity or a single advertised feature.
Recommended Free Tools
- Investments: Identify the securities or other investments you intend to trade, then confirm the broker offers them.
- Account type: Check that the account type you need is available and review any restrictions or minimums.
- Guidance: Decide whether you want self-directed investing, access to advice, or another level of help; compare the actual service terms.
- Expected use: Consider how often you expect to trade, how much you expect to invest, and which research, data, or support tools you will use.
For U.S. firms, FINRA’s broker-selection guidance and the SEC’s brokerage account-opening bulletin explain the kinds of services, fees, and conflicts to investigate. A platform’s stated offering can change, so confirm the details in its current materials.

Compare the full cost, not just the commission
A commission is a charge for executing a trade, but it is only one possible cost. The SEC advises investors to understand fees before opening an account. Ask for the current fee schedule and read the account agreement; distinguish broker charges from expenses charged by funds or other investments.
| Cost to check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Trade commissions | Whether a charge applies to the specific security, transaction, and account you plan to use. |
| Markups or markdowns | Whether the firm may transact from its own inventory and how that affects the price you pay or receive. |
| Account and platform charges | Maintenance, platform, inactivity, minimum-balance, or other recurring fees and the conditions that trigger them. |
| Moving or closing the account | Transfer, account-closure, and wire fees, including charges that could apply if you later move assets. |
| Investment expenses | Costs associated with a fund or other investment, which may be separate from what the broker charges. |
These charges and whether they are negotiable depend on the firm and your agreement. Do not assume a displayed rate applies to every security or account, and do not rely on an old example in place of the current fee schedule. The SEC’s account-opening guidance describes common brokerage costs and urges investors to understand the fees that apply to their accounts.

Check the investments, tools, and support you will actually use
Compare available investments and account types with your intended use. Then look at the practical workflow: which order types are supported, what research and market data are available, how desktop and mobile functions differ, and how you can reach support when an account or order issue arises. Confirm each item in the broker’s current documentation rather than relying on a feature list that may have changed.
A person who trades infrequently may place more weight on recurring account charges and access to the investments they want. Someone who trades actively may care more about order controls, execution information, market data, and platform costs. These are ways to prioritize the comparison, not a universal ranking of brokers.

Understand order handling and execution
When you submit an order online, the broker receives it and decides where to send it for execution. Depending on the order and broker, it may go to an exchange, market maker, electronic communications network, or the firm’s own inventory. Some market makers may pay for order flow, and a broker may execute an order internally. The broker has a duty to seek the best execution reasonably available, but that is not a promise of the best imaginable price or a better-than-quoted fill on every order.
Read the broker’s routing and execution disclosures, and consider price, speed, and the order type you use. The SEC explains the routing process and the possibility of price improvement in Executing an Order. Price improvement is a possibility, not a guarantee.

Know what your order instruction means
- Limit order: Sets the highest price you will pay to buy, or the lowest price you will accept to sell. The order may not execute.
- Market order: Prioritizes execution, but the final price can differ from the quote, particularly in a fast-moving or less-liquid market.
Order instructions and their exact operation vary by broker; similar labels do not always mean identical rules. Review the firm’s explanations before using an order type. After submitting an order, check its status and confirm whether it filled or a cancellation succeeded before sending a duplicate. The SEC’s order-types bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, describes common instructions and their risks.
Check settlement and account rules
Cash-account payment and resale timing rules can affect when funds are available and what activity is permitted. Do not assume you can fund a purchase by immediately reselling it. Check the broker’s current explanation for your account type and the applicable settlement rules. Investor.gov’s Online Investing guidance emphasizes understanding how the account and trading process work; as it puts it, “Online trading is quick and easy, but online investing takes time.”

Check the firm, representative, and limits of protection
Use official U.S. tools to look up the firm and, where applicable, the individual representative. Review registration and disciplinary information, then read the firm’s relationship summary and account documents to understand its services, fees, and conflicts. FINRA’s broker-selection guidance links to resources for checking firms and professionals; Investor.gov also provides guidance on checking a broker or investment adviser.
If relevant, check whether the firm is a SIPC member and consult SIPC’s current materials for the scope of protection. SIPC may protect customer securities and cash when a member brokerage fails, subject to the statutory framework. It does not insure investment value, make up for market declines, guarantee performance, or operate like deposit insurance. Membership is one part of due diligence, not a reason to overlook the firm’s background or account terms.
Make account security part of the comparison
Look for multi-factor authentication (MFA), account alerts, recovery options, and accessible support for account problems. The SEC’s 2026-updated bulletin recommends two-step verification or MFA when available. Turn it on if the broker offers it, use a strong unique password, and review the provider’s current security documentation to see which authentication methods it supports. The general guidance does not establish that every broker accepts hardware security keys or the same MFA methods.
The SEC’s Protecting Your Online Investment Accounts from Fraud includes its recommendation: “Use two-step verification or ‘multi-factor’ authentication, if available.”
Use a consistent comparison before opening an account
- Write down your requirements. List the investments, account type, guidance, tools, and support you need.
- Collect current documents. For each candidate, find the fee schedule, account agreement, relationship summary, order-routing and execution disclosures, and security documentation.
- Compare costs against your own use. Include likely account charges, transaction costs, transfer or closure costs, and relevant investment expenses—not only a headline commission.
- Verify the firm and any representative. Check official registration and disciplinary information, and establish whether SIPC membership is relevant to the firm.
- Test your understanding of the workflow. Learn how to enter, review, confirm, and cancel orders, and where to check status and account rules.
- Secure the account. Enable available MFA and review alerts and recovery methods before funding the account.
These checks provide a way to compare providers on fit, total costs, execution, background, security, and support. The SEC and FINRA materials cited here support an evaluation framework, not a current ranked list of brokers or provider-specific price comparison. Recheck the firm’s terms before opening an account.
