Start by asking your employer or recruiter whether they provide, subsidize or arrange housing, and get the price and conditions in writing. If you need to find a place yourself, compare furnished rooms and shared flats as well as whole apartments, using dated city rent data as a guide—not as a promise of current availability or affordability.
Start with the employer or recruiter
Ask HR or the recruiter whether accommodation is supplied, subsidized or arranged, and request the terms in writing before you commit. Confirm:

- What you will pay, including utilities and any other recurring charges.
- How long the accommodation is available and whether it covers the full work period.
- Who will share the property and what space is included.
- Whether the agreement allows you to stay for the entire period you need.
- How far the address is from your actual workplace and how you will commute.
- When you must leave, including whether that date matches the end of your work contract.
Do not assume that every Spanish employer has a general duty to house employees. A specific accommodation guarantee applies to certain circular seasonal-migration hiring; it is not a rule for all jobs or ordinary relocations.

For a broad, dated comparison, the ULI Knowledge Institute’s 2025 publication reports 2024 Q4 median rents for new contracts of €1,300–€1,600 per month in Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia. Its lower-range group—Alicante, Seville, Zaragoza and Murcia—was €750–€950 per month. These are city-level figures for new contracts, not current room prices, live listings or a measure of what an individual worker can afford. See ULI’s report.

Historical trends can also help explain why a headline average may not match a new renter’s quote. Banco de España distinguishes rental-stock prices and updates to existing contracts from prices on new contracts, as well as homes entering and leaving the rental market. In its 2019–2024 analysis, new-contract real prices in Valencia grew by an average of 4.5% annually, and the report describes an entry premium of more than 20% there. These are historical findings, not 2026 rent quotes. Read Banco de España’s Annual Report 2025.
Declared-rent benchmarks can give another point of reference, but they are not a catalogue of available homes. Spain’s Tax Agency provides rental statistics by municipality and, for some large municipalities, postal code; its statistics page shows the 2024 edition as the latest. Check the relevant area where available, then compare current offers and confirm what each asking price includes. Consult the Tax Agency’s rental statistics. SERPAVI can also serve as a reference point, rather than a live offer: SERPAVI.

Compare the type and full cost of accommodation
For a self-arranged search, compare options on the same basis. A room in a furnished shared flat may be more practical than a whole apartment, but its value depends on the total recurring charge, length of stay and commute—not just the advertised rent.
- Furnished room: Check what furniture and shared facilities are included, how many people share the property, and whether the agreement covers your full stay.
- Shared flat: Compare your room’s price with the total household arrangements, including utility charges and any costs that are not included in the rent.
- Whole apartment: Compare its full monthly cost and contract duration with the cost of sharing, while accounting for the size and location you actually need.
For each option, write down the rent, utilities, other recurring charges, furnishings, contract length, commute and required move-out date. A lower rent may not be a better fit if the contract ends before your job does or the address makes getting to work impractical.

Search by city, work area and length of stay
Use the same city and neighborhood terms across search queries, and specify your expected stay. Useful Spanish searches include “alojamiento para empleados,” “habitaciones para trabajadores,” “piso compartido amueblado” and “alquiler temporal cerca del trabajo.” Add the city, workplace area and length of stay. These phrases help describe what you need; they do not identify a verified provider or guarantee that a suitable listing exists.
For Barcelona, the city’s official dashboard offers local trend context, including temporary-rental data. It reports average rents above €1,000 a month from the second half of 2022, 8,795 seasonal rental contracts in 2025 (4.6% more than in 2024), and seasonal contracts representing 15.8% of new rental contracts in the first quarter of 2026. Those figures describe Barcelona at the stated times; they should not be transferred to other cities or treated as current room-level prices. Check Barcelona’s official rental dashboard.
Rank #4
The ULI figures offer a dated comparison across selected cities, while Banco de España’s historical analysis includes Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza and Málaga. Neither source establishes current neighborhood-level room prices or availability. Compare listings near your own workplace rather than choosing a city on the basis of a single citywide figure.
Check whether the 2026 circular-migration rules apply
If you are hired under Spain’s circular migration scheme, the 2026 collective hiring-from-origin order has a specific housing requirement. Article 7 states: “La persona empleadora estará obligada a garantizar un alojamiento durante todo el periodo de actividad y en cada uno de los llamamientos sucesivos.” In this context, the employer must guarantee accommodation during each activity period and successive call-ups. This requirement applies within that scheme, not to every employee relocating to Spain. Read Order ISM/1547/2025 in the BOE.
Best Value
The order says accommodation should preferably be free or governed by the relevant collective agreement. If rent and utilities are charged, the order sets written-documentation requirements and IPREM-linked limits. Check the order and official migration guidance for the terms that apply to your case rather than assuming that a standard rental arrangement meets them. See the Ministry’s collective hiring-from-origin guidance.
Verify the offer before paying or signing
Before committing to any accommodation, verify the provider and the property, and make sure the written agreement matches what you were told. Check the total charges, length of stay, included utilities and furnishings, and move-out date. Confirm that the address works for your actual workplace and travel schedule. Official city or tax statistics help frame a search, but they do not verify a particular room, landlord or offer.
