What an abandoned camp is
Abandoned camps were introduced with the Wilderness Bound drop. Mojang’s announcement encourages players to seek them out as part of the drop’s outdoor exploration theme. A camp is built around a tent and a campsite. Third-party structure guides describe chests and barrels inside, and in some instances an oxidized copper chest. Mojang’s official pages do not publish a full structure layout, so treat those details as community-documented rather than official specifications.

Finding one with a command
The command route is the most direct method, but it has two conditions: you must be playing Java Edition, and cheats must be enabled for the world. Cheats are controlled in the world’s settings, so check that they are on before you try the command.
- Confirm you are running Java Edition. The command syntax cited in third-party structure guides is written for Java.
- Open the world’s settings and make sure cheats are allowed. If the world was created without them, you will need to create a new world or edit the existing one’s settings.
- Open the chat window and type
/locate structure #minecraft:abandoned_camp. - Read the coordinates returned in chat. The command reports the nearest abandoned camp from your current position, so run it again from a new location if the first camp is already explored.
Structure guides describe this command as the way to locate the nearest abandoned camp. Command syntax is not documented as identical across every edition or release, so if the command does not work, check the version you are running before assuming the world is at fault.

Finding one through exploration
Without commands, you have to search. Camps generate in the Overworld only. Third-party structure guides list the following biomes as places where camps can appear:
- Forest-type biomes: Meadow, Cherry Grove, Forest, Birch Forest, Old Growth Birch Forest, Flower Forest, Windswept Forest, Dappled Forest, and Pale Garden.
- Taiga-type biomes: Taiga, Snowy Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, and Old Growth Pine Taiga.
- Jungle biomes: Sparse Jungle and Bamboo Jungle.
- Other biomes: Swamp, Savanna, and Wooded Badlands.
Mojang’s announcement names the Dappled Forest specifically as a place where abandoned camps are hidden. If you are searching on foot, start there and then widen the search to the other biomes.
Exploration is a search strategy, not a guarantee. Official sources do not give a route, coordinates, or spawn-rate figure, so there is no reliable estimate of how long a search will take. Look for the tent and campsite described above, and be prepared to cover several biomes before you find one.
Using maps to find more camps
Mojang’s Java Snapshot 7 notes state that abandoned camps can now contain Explorer Maps. These maps lead to other locations, which makes a found camp a starting point for a longer route. Snapshot 7 notes list maps that point to other abandoned camps in Bamboo Jungle, Cherry Grove, Birch Forest, Dappled Forest, Flower Forest, Pale Garden, Swamp, and Windswept Forest.

The same notes list maps to other structures: Ancient Cities, Trial Chambers, Mineshafts, Desert Pyramids, Jungle Pyramids, Warm Ocean Ruins, and Woodland Mansions. These details come from a snapshot, so they may change in a later release. Check the version you are playing before relying on them.

If you are playing on a world with cheats, the command is the faster choice. If you want an unmodified survival experience, search by biome and use any Explorer Maps you find to plan the next leg.

Mojang’s expedition notice for Wilderness Bound includes this sentence: “The dappled forest hides abandoned camps, new building possibilities, and plenty of opportunities to get lost.” The page credits Linn Viberg as its author.

Nintendo’s Switch announcement also covered the Wilderness Bound drop for Minecraft on Nintendo Switch. The command route above applies to Java Edition only, so Switch players should rely on biome exploration and any maps they find in camps.
What is not established
Official sources do not provide a numeric camp rarity, percentage, coordinate, or expected walking distance. Any figure you see on a community site should be treated as unverified unless it is tied to a named source and date. The same applies to camp contents and layout beyond the general description above.
Do not assume a command works in every edition or version without checking. The biome list and map details come from third-party guides and a snapshot, so verify them against your current game version when you play.
