If you know the behavior you want to control but not the policy’s name, search Administrative Templates by keyword in Group Policy Management Editor. Start with a few words describing the behavior, then check each result’s help text, policy path, scope, and supported Windows versions. If the editor does not find a suitable setting, use Microsoft’s release-specific Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet.
Search Administrative Templates by behavior
- Open Group Policy Management Console (GPMC), edit the relevant Group Policy Object (GPO), and go to the appropriate Computer Configuration or User Configuration branch.
- Right-click Administrative Templates and select Filter Options.
- Enable Keyword Filters. Enter a few words describing the behavior, choose a match type, and select which fields to search: Policy Setting Title, Help Text, and/or Comment. Microsoft documents these filter controls in its GPMC guidance.
- Apply the filter and inspect the results. Click a candidate setting to read its description before deciding whether it controls the behavior you want.
Choose a match type
- Any returns matches containing any of the words you entered. It is a useful starting point when you are unsure which terms Microsoft uses.
- All requires all entered words to match and can narrow a broad result set.
- Exact searches for the exact words. Use it when you have a likely phrase; if it returns nothing, try a less restrictive match or different wording.
These match definitions are Microsoft’s. As a practical search strategy, begin with Any, then try All or Exact if there are too many results. If there are none, test synonyms and the feature’s user-facing name. Searching help text can surface a policy even when its title does not use your wording; comments can also be included if they are useful in your environment.

Verify that a result is the right policy
A keyword match is a lead, not proof that the setting is appropriate. For each candidate, check its full policy path, whether it belongs under Computer Configuration or User Configuration, its description, and the Windows versions it supports. These details help distinguish settings with similar names and prevent applying a policy at the wrong scope. Microsoft’s reference spreadsheet can also be filtered to compare settings and their release information.

Use Microsoft’s settings spreadsheet when editor search is insufficient
Microsoft publishes a Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet for specific Windows releases. It lists Computer and User Administrative Template settings and can be filtered by spreadsheet columns. Choose the spreadsheet that corresponds to the Windows release you need to manage; a setting’s presence in a newer release does not establish that it is available in an older one.
| Windows release reference | Spreadsheet version | Publication date |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 25H2 | V3.0 | February 2, 2026 |
| Windows 11 24H2 | V2.0 | July 24, 2025 |
Get the relevant file from Microsoft: Windows 11 25H2 Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet, V3.0 or Windows 11 24H2 Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet, V2.0. Use it to find candidate settings, then verify the setting’s description, scope, path, and supported release before deploying it.

Check the filter’s limits
Microsoft states, “Filters do not work with Classic Administrative Templates.” The cited GPMC instructions are legacy documentation, so interface details may differ between Windows and management-console versions.

Check which Administrative Templates are available
Group Policy Administrative Templates use ADMX files and corresponding language-specific ADML files. In a domain, the editor may read templates from a Central Store. The templates available there, and their release version, can affect which settings appear. Microsoft explains the Central Store and Administrative Template files.

Microsoft cautions: “Use the ADMX download packages in only the Central Store scenario. Replacing files in c:WindowsPolicyDefinitions isn’t supported.” Do not replace local PolicyDefinitions files as a workaround for an absent result; check the applicable Central Store and template version instead.
