Open Windows 11 Settings, use the Find a setting box (or press Ctrl+E), and search for the setting name or a plain-language description; use category browsing, a verified ms-settings: link, or PowerToys only when those routes better fit the task.
Why Settings search is usually better than God Mode
The folder commonly called “God Mode” is an All Tasks view containing a long collection of Windows controls. Its entries can be difficult to scan because labels are often technical, similarly named, or grouped differently from the way you think about the task. The list also is not a promise that every entry corresponds to a current Windows 11 page.

Windows 11 Settings is designed for the opposite workflow: search first, then open the matching page. Microsoft’s own guidance describes two supported ways to locate a control: enter a keyword in Settings search, or select a category and browse its grouped options. Start with that built-in route before trying to decode an unfamiliar All Tasks label.
Find the setting from the Settings window
1. Open Settings
Open Settings from the Start menu. You do not need to open the All Tasks folder first; Settings search is independent of that list.

2. Focus the search box
At the top of the Settings window, select Find a setting. If you prefer the keyboard, press Ctrl+E while Settings is open. Microsoft Support documents this shortcut specifically for searching for a setting.
3. Enter the label when you know it
Type the wording you saw in God Mode, or the closest part of it. Use a short, distinctive phrase rather than the entire sentence. For example, if the entry mentions notifications, begin with notifications; if it concerns a monitor or resolution, begin with display.
4. Select the result that matches the task
Read the result’s page or section name before opening it. A result can lead to a broad category rather than the exact control, so confirm that the destination contains the switch, list, or button you need. Settings search may return several related pages; choose the one whose description matches the action, not merely the one with a familiar word.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →5. Use the page’s own navigation
After opening a result, look through the headings and expandable sections on that page. Windows often places related controls together, so a search for one option can reveal the neighboring setting you actually need without returning to the All Tasks list.
Search with words you would use to describe the job
You do not have to know Microsoft’s exact label. If the God Mode wording is cryptic, translate the task into ordinary language and try several short searches. Microsoft’s documented examples include terms such as display and notifications; the same approach works with other recognizable feature names.

- Start with the object: try “Bluetooth,” “mouse,” “printer,” or “sound.”
- Try the action: use words such as “change,” “turn off,” “connect,” or “default” together with the feature.
- Try the outcome: search for “screen brightness,” “quiet notifications,” or “default apps” when that is what you want to accomplish.
- Remove extra words: if a long query produces no useful result, reduce it to the most distinctive noun.
Search terms are a navigation aid, not a command language. A result that contains one of your words may still be the wrong page, so verify the controls shown after you open it.
Use Ctrl+E when you want a keyboard-only route
When Settings is already open, Ctrl+E moves focus to its search field. Type immediately, review the results with the keyboard, and open the selected result. This is useful when you are repeatedly checking settings or when the pointer is not convenient. The shortcut applies to the Settings window; it is not a global Windows shortcut that searches every application.

Browse Settings categories when search is ambiguous
Category navigation is the second built-in route Microsoft recommends. Use it when a search term returns several unrelated results or when you only know the general area.
- Open Settings and review the category list in the left navigation pane.
- Choose the category that matches the feature, such as display-related controls under the display category or alert controls under the notifications area.
- Read the page headings and expand any grouped sections.
- Follow the related-settings links on the page if the first screen does not contain the exact control.
Browsing is slower than a precise search, but it gives you context. It can also help you learn the current Windows 11 label for a control that was exposed under a different name in the All Tasks view.

Open a known page with an ms-settings: URI
Windows provides page-specific ms-settings: URI schemes. A URI can open a particular Settings page directly, which is useful for a shortcut, a support instruction, or a script you use regularly. This route is best when you already know the destination page; it is not a replacement for discovering an unknown setting.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How to use the URI safely
- Identify the exact Settings page you want, using Settings search or category browsing first.
- Find that page’s entry in Microsoft’s current
ms-settings:URI catalog rather than guessing the syntax. - Copy the URI exactly as documented and open it through a Windows link or the Run dialog.
- Check that the expected page appears. If it does not, return to the catalog and confirm the entry for your Windows edition and device.
Microsoft notes that URI entries can be removed, and some are available only when the device supports the associated hardware or feature. A URI that worked on another computer, or in an older Windows release, is therefore not guaranteed to work on yours. Treat the catalog entry—not a remembered shortcut—as the authority.
Use PowerToys Run only if you already use PowerToys
Microsoft PowerToys includes a Windows Settings search plugin for PowerToys Run. It offers another way to locate Settings pages from a launcher, which can be convenient for people who already keep PowerToys installed and use its keyboard workflow.
PowerToys is optional. Installing it solely to replace the normal Settings search adds a separate utility and another interface to learn. For most readers, the built-in search box is the lower-friction choice; use the plugin when PowerToys is already part of your routine or when launching pages from its search interface is valuable to you.
Choose the route that matches what you know
| Route | Best when | What you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Settings search | You know the setting name or can describe the task | Only Windows 11 Settings | Similar results may require you to inspect the destination page |
| Category browsing | You know the general feature area but not the label | Only Windows 11 Settings | Slower when the category contains many controls |
ms-settings: URI |
You know the exact destination and want a direct link | The correct, current Microsoft catalog entry | Some pages are removed or conditional on device support |
| PowerToys Run Settings plugin | You already use PowerToys and prefer its launcher | PowerToys with the Settings plugin available | Optional installation and a separate search interface |
What to do when search does not find the right page
The query returns too many results
Shorten the query to the feature name, then add one action word. For example, begin with display, inspect the results, and refine with a term such as brightness or resolution only if needed. Opening the most relevant category can be faster than continuing to add words.

The wording in God Mode is unfamiliar
Ignore the formal phrasing and describe the result you want. “Stop pop-up alerts” is a more useful starting point than trying to reproduce an obscure administrative label. Once you find the page, note its current heading for future searches.
The result opens a broad page
Scan every section on that page, including collapsed groups and links under related settings. Settings search can identify the correct category even when it does not place the exact toggle at the top of the results.
A remembered URI no longer opens
Do not keep editing the string at random. Locate the destination through Settings, then compare it with Microsoft’s current URI catalog. A removed entry, a renamed page, or a device-dependent feature can explain why an older shortcut fails.
The page or control is absent on this computer
Check whether the feature requires hardware your device does not have. Microsoft’s URI documentation specifically identifies entries that depend on device support. The absence of a control is not proof that the All Tasks list is wrong; the two interfaces do not guarantee identical coverage.

Labels and page organization can change. Re-run the search using the feature name instead of copying an old path, and verify the resulting page before changing a setting. This approach is safer than assuming that a historical God Mode label still maps to the same control.

Examples of a practical search workflow
Changing a display option
Open Settings, press Ctrl+E, and type display. Select the result whose page describes the screen or monitor controls, then locate the specific display option. If several display-related results appear, use the page headings to distinguish screen configuration from accessibility or graphics options.
Managing alerts
Search for notifications. Open the result that exposes notification behavior, then review its grouped controls. If your goal is to stop alerts from a particular application, continue from that page rather than searching for the application name alone.
Finding a setting when you know only the outcome
Suppose you want Windows to use a different application for a file type but do not know the label. Search for default apps or simply default, inspect the matching Settings page, and follow its file-type or application controls. The outcome-oriented phrase is often easier to remember than the exact control name shown in an All Tasks entry.

Do not assume Copilot+ natural-language search is universal
A Windows Insider Blog post dated January 17, 2025 described a preview experience in which Copilot+ PCs could search in places such as File Explorer, the taskbar search box, and Settings by typing what was on the user’s mind. That statement describes a preview-era capability for supported Copilot+ hardware; it is not evidence that every Windows 11 computer has the same semantic search behavior today.
For a dependable procedure, use the documented Settings search box and category navigation. If your device happens to offer a newer natural-language feature, treat it as an additional convenience rather than a requirement for locating a setting.
Build a repeatable way to avoid God Mode
- Record the current page name: after you locate a control, note the Settings category and page heading instead of saving only the old All Tasks wording.
- Keep searches task-oriented: use a feature name or the action you want to perform.
- Use a URI only after verification: direct links are valuable for known destinations, but they should come from the current Microsoft catalog.
- Recheck after major updates: if a saved route stops working, search Settings again rather than assuming the control was removed.
- Prefer the built-in tools for ordinary work: the search box and category list require no extra installation and are the most broadly applicable routes described here.
God Mode can remain a useful starting point when you recognize an entry, but it is not the only index to Windows controls. Settings search gives you a shorter path from the task in your head to the page that implements it, while category browsing, verified URIs, and the optional PowerToys plugin cover the cases where search alone is inconvenient.
