A navigation app can suggest a path, but it cannot confirm that the road is open, suitable for your vehicle, or safe in current conditions. If you cannot verify a reasonable route, wait, postpone the trip, or check whether local transit or a shuttle is available.
What should I do first when I encounter a road closure?
- Get to a safe place before checking. If you are driving and cannot use hands-free controls safely, pull over where stopping is permitted and away from moving traffic. Do not stop in a live lane or where signs prohibit stopping.
- Read the closure notice. Note the location and direction, whether the closure is full or partial, any stated cause, and whether officials have marked a detour.
- Check the responsible transportation agency. Look for the state, provincial, or local transport department’s traveler-information service, including 511 where available. Confirm that the service covers the road and area in question; in much of North America, 511 is regional, not one uniform nationwide service. Caltrans describes its 511 calls as routing callers to region-specific information and notes that many 511 systems also provide web and mobile trip-planning services (Caltrans 511).
- Verify the alternate route from end to end. Check the route itself—not only the road where you first turn away—for closures, incidents, construction, weather, traffic, and restrictions. 511NY specifically advises checking conditions on the alternate route under consideration; its map can report closures, incidents, construction, speeds, and winter conditions (511NY).
- Follow official detour directions. Do not drive around barricades, enter a closed road, or treat an app-generated path as a substitute for an authority-designated detour. Detours are operational decisions: emergency transportation planning involves state and local authorities, and a British Columbia emergency-detour report says road conditions must be assessed to determine whether a route is safe and viable (British Columbia emergency-detour report).
How do I decide whether an alternate route is suitable?
Compare viable choices in this order. Travel time matters, but it should not outweigh legal access, current conditions, or whether the road suits your vehicle.

- Official status: Is the route reported open, and are there restrictions or further closures along it?
- Conditions and hazards: What do agency reports say about weather, road conditions, incidents, construction, and traffic?
- Vehicle suitability: Can your vehicle use the road safely and legally, given any posted or reported limitations and the road’s conditions?
- Practical support: Where relevant, consider access to fuel, services, or communication, especially if the route is remote or conditions are changing.
- Other ways to travel: Is a shuttle, transit, waiting, or postponing feasible?
If a report is missing, do not treat that as confirmation the road is clear. When the closure reason or conditions make the proposed path uncertain, wait for an update or choose another travel option rather than guessing.
Can Google Maps or another navigation app avoid a road closure?
Mapping apps can help you see candidate paths, but a generated route is not proof that a road is open or safe. Cross-check the app’s suggestion with the responsible agency’s current information, and obey barricades and posted directions. 511NY’s FAQ explains that users can edit a displayed path with waypoints to avoid a closure; that is a routing feature, not a safety guarantee (511NY FAQ).

How do I check if an alternate route is open?
Use the official traveler-information service for the jurisdiction where the road is located, and make sure its coverage includes the route. Review reports for the entire path, including locations beyond the first turn. Available details and update schedules differ by service, and a camera or sensor may not cover every road.
For example, 511NY says its winter-condition map is based on snowplow reports and updates at least every four hours during winter, more often during storms. It also notes that cameras, signs, and speed sensors are not installed on every road, so the absence of a report or camera view does not establish that a road is clear (511NY FAQ). Nova Scotia 511 says major disruptions are updated as developments occur, winter conditions are updated three times daily or after significant changes, and processed information is posted within five minutes; those schedules describe that service, not a universal 511 standard (511 Nova Scotia FAQ).

Because conditions may change between updates, recheck during a long or changing incident, particularly before committing to a route that depends on current weather or road conditions.

Consider waiting for an official update, postponing if circumstances allow, or checking local transit and shuttle notices. Transit may help in some emergencies, but an alternative service is not guaranteed. Bay Area 511 says transit may be the best or only option during a roadway or bridge emergency and advises checking for service changes and relocated stops (511 Bay Area).

How can I check route information safely?
Check before departure when possible. If you are already driving, use voice commands only if you can do so safely, or pull over legally before using a smartphone. 511.org advises checking before a trip, using voice commands, or pulling over before phone use (511 Bay Area). Phone laws differ by location; follow local law and do not let a screen distract you from driving. For an emergency on the highway, use the local emergency number. Nova Scotia 511’s FAQ says, “Call 911 for any emergency” (511 Nova Scotia FAQ).
