In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported 7.1 million job openings and 5.2 million hires in August 2026. Those preliminary national estimates, released September 29, are a broad snapshot—not a count of jobs available in your occupation or area. A more useful search starts with local and occupational evidence, then targets related roles and employers through several channels.
Start with evidence, not the assumption that hiring has stopped
The BLS August 2026 Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) estimated 7.1 million openings, 5.2 million hires, and 5.1 million total separations in the United States. The release came out September 29, 2026, and identifies the estimates as preliminary. Openings are positions open on the last business day of August; hires and separations measure payroll changes during the month. These national figures do not show whether a specific employer is hiring or whether openings match your skills, location, or schedule. See the BLS August 2026 JOLTS release.

Use the numbers as context, not as a reason to send out more applications indiscriminately. Conditions differ by industry, occupation, and location. For an individual search, the relevant question is where your experience can meet a real employer need.

Write down the tasks you have handled, the skills you can demonstrate, and the outcomes you have contributed to. Search by those responsibilities as well as by your current or previous title. A familiar title may be scarce even when employers need similar work under a different name.

Look for adjacent occupations where your experience transfers. For example, experience coordinating schedules, records, and customer requests may apply to more than one administrative role. Treat examples as prompts to investigate—not proof that you meet a particular vacancy’s requirements.
- List responsibilities you can explain with specific examples.
- Identify tools, credentials, or methods you have used and can substantiate.
- Search several related titles and compare the actual duties in their postings.
- Keep practical limits—such as location, schedule, and pay needs—in view as you broaden the search.
Compare plausible roles using occupational and local information
The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook can help you compare occupations, outlook, wage information for your area, and typical education, training, and experience requirements. Its job-search guidance explains how to use those details and points to Department of Labor resources. For each role you are considering, check the same factors rather than choosing based on a national outlook number alone:
- Local and occupational outlook: Does the evidence suggest opportunities in the occupation and area you can realistically work in?
- Local wage information: Is the typical pay compatible with your needs? Wage data describes a market, not a promise about an individual offer.
- Experience match: Can you show evidence for the posting’s central responsibilities and qualifications?
- Qualification gap: Does the role require training, education, or a credential you do not have? Separate true requirements from preferred qualifications.
- Practical fit: Can you meet the location, schedule, and other stated conditions?

Search through several channels each week
Do not rely on a single job board. Build a sustainable weekly routine that combines relevant advertised openings with conversations and public workforce resources. CareerOneStop, a Department of Labor resource linked from the BLS job-search page, covers finding openings, résumé preparation, networking, interviewing, and salary negotiation.
- Review relevant postings. Search for the titles and tasks you identified, and read each live description for required qualifications, location, schedule, and application instructions.
- Contact people who understand the work. Reach out to professional, community, alumni, or workforce-service contacts with a focused question about roles, employers, or skills in demand. Networking can provide information and connections, but there is no guaranteed ratio or outcome.
- Use public workforce help. Explore CareerOneStop and local workforce services for job-search guidance and support with résumés, interviews, or other application steps. BLS directs jobseekers to these resources but does not provide individualized career advice.
- Track what you have tried. Keep a simple record of roles, employers, dates, and follow-ups so you can see whether your search is reaching the right kinds of openings.
There is no universally supported number of applications to submit or networking contacts to make. Choose a routine you can maintain and prioritize fit over volume.

Consider federal openings if they fit your goals
USAJOBS is the official federal employment website. BLS describes its search options as including agency, job title, salary, location, and career field; jobseekers can also set notifications and save application documents. BLS’s job-search guide includes information about USAJOBS.

Make each application easy to assess
For each application, connect your résumé—and a cover letter when requested—to the responsibilities and qualifications in the posting. Put the most relevant, accurate evidence where an employer can readily find it. Use concrete examples of work performed, tools used, or results achieved when you can support them. Do not claim a credential or skill you cannot substantiate.
A trusted workforce or career resource can review your materials if useful. Review help may improve clarity, but no particular résumé format, paid service, or application method guarantees an interview or offer.
Adjust the search when responses are missing
If a reasonable period of focused applications brings no responses, reassess the process instead of assuming one explanation. The sources do not set a universal waiting period or identify why a particular applicant has not heard back. Review the evidence you can control:

- Are you applying to roles whose core duties and stated requirements match your experience?
- Does your résumé make that match clear using accurate, relevant examples?
- Are you searching adjacent titles and employers, rather than one narrow category?
- Do location, schedule, pay expectations, or a genuine qualification gap limit the options you are pursuing?
- Could a local workforce service or trusted reviewer help you spot a specific issue in your materials or approach?
Change one or more parts of the search based on what you find, then observe whether the new targets and materials are producing more relevant opportunities or conversations. This is a way to make the search more informed, not a formula that guarantees employment.
