A store locator service is a website or app feature that helps people find a business’s physical locations. Visitors can search by address or postal code, choose a region, or—with permission—share their device location, then see nearby branches and details such as hours, services, contact information, and directions.
What does “store” mean in a store locator?
Here, “store” can mean more than a retail shop. A locator can list company branches, dealers, stockists, service centers, or other places where customers can visit or receive service. The feature may be part of a business website, an online store, or a mobile app.

- The business maintains location records. These can include each location’s name, address, geographic coordinates, opening hours, contact details, images, and services.
- The visitor chooses a search origin. They might type an address or postal code, select a region, or allow the browser or device to share their current location.
- The locator finds nearby records. It uses the search origin and location data to return relevant places, typically in a map, a list, or both.
- The visitor checks the details and plans a visit. A result may show hours, services, contact information, and directions or route information.
Device location is optional: browsers and devices generally ask for permission before sharing it. A locator should also let people search from a typed or selected location if they decline permission or want to find a place elsewhere. Google’s Locator Plus implementation guide describes combining maps, place information, location discovery, and routing to support location search.

What should a useful store locator show?
A locator is most useful when it does more than mark a point on a map. Its results should help someone identify a suitable location and decide what to do next.
- Findable locations: clear names and addresses, with search by address, postal code, or area.
- Useful place details: opening hours, contact information, and relevant services.
- Readable results: a map, a list, or both, so visitors can compare nearby options.
- A path to the visit: directions or route information when available.
- Relevant filters: for example, filtering by service when locations do not all offer the same things.
Some commerce locators can answer more than “Where is the nearest branch?” Shopify’s Storefront API documentation for Location describes locations that hold inventory and support in-store pickup, with locations sortable by proximity.

How can a business add a store locator?
Use a packaged locator widget
A ready-made storefront app can provide location management and a standard locator interface, reducing the amount of frontend work a business must build itself. For example, the documented BigCommerce app from Hypa Apps provides location data management and a Page Builder widget. Its documentation says it uses Mapbox for maps and address search, which requires a separate account and separate usage-based billing.
Build a custom experience using APIs
An API-based approach gives a team more control over the locator’s design and how it connects to the rest of a storefront, but the team must build and maintain the frontend. The same app offers a public storefront location API for custom storefronts. Google’s implementation guide covers combining mapping, place data, geolocation, and routing; it also recommends limiting requested place fields to what the experience needs, which can help manage API costs.

Before choosing, consider how location records will be entered and kept current, whether they need to connect to inventory or other business data, what search and map features are needed, and which external mapping or place-data providers have their own account and usage costs. A basic branch finder may need only nearby locations and directions; a commerce locator may also need service filters, product availability, appointment booking, or pickup information.

Location details are only useful when they reflect the real business: a stale address, incorrect hours, or outdated service list can send a visitor to the wrong place or lead them to expect something a branch does not offer. Businesses should have a clear process for updating records when locations, hours, contact details, or services change.

For a locator that exposes location records through a public storefront API, keep private information out of public location fields. The API documentation also cautions implementers to validate and sanitize rich text before displaying it, so that content entered as data is handled safely in the storefront.
