In its worked examples, PMT(rate, nper, pv) derives a periodic loan payment, while NPV(rate, flows) and IRR(flows) evaluate a sequence of investment cash flows. The figures below are examples from Michał Niedźwiedzki’s AI-assisted VisiMark tutorial, not a lender quote or independently tested results. The tutorial’s publication year is not shown in the accessible result.
What each function calculates
These functions are useful only when the rate, period, timing, and signs describe the same financial setup. In particular, a periodic NPV rate must match the interval between the cash flows; a yearly rate belongs with yearly flows, and a monthly rate with monthly flows.

| Function | Inputs | Use |
|---|---|---|
PMT(rate, nper, pv) |
Rate per period, number of periods, and present value (the principal in the loan example) | Calculates a fixed periodic loan payment. Match the rate interval to the payment interval: annual rate with annual periods, or monthly rate with monthly periods. |
NPV(rate, flows) |
Discount rate per interval and an ordered sequence of cash flows | Discounts the cash-flow sequence to evaluate its value at the chosen rate. Timing and cash-flow signs affect the result. |
IRR(flows) |
An ordered sequence of cash flows | Finds the break-even rate associated with that sequence. The result depends on the cash-flow timing and signs. |
The generic financial-function conventions described in the Claris FileMaker 17 archived reference and iSee Systems built-ins reference treat cash paid out as negative and cash received as positive. These are general function references, not VisiMark documentation.

How the VisiMark workflow is structured
The tutorial describes a Markdown table followed by a fenced vmark block. The block declares calculation rules for table columns and derived totals. VisiMark’s fmt command fills values described by those rules; check reports when a value disagrees with its declared rule. The author says the two example documents pass visimark check; that is the tutorial author’s report, not an independent verification.
#1 Best Overall
- Profitability calculations; cash flow function Calculates NPV and IRR for uneven cash flows
- Time-value-of-money and Amortization keys solve problems including: pension calculations, loans, mortgages, etc.
- Ideal calculator for students, managers and statisticians
- Built-in functionality : List-based one- and two-variable statistics with four regression options: linear, logarithmic, exponential and power
- The BA II Plus calculator is approved for use on the following professional exams: Chartered Financial Analyst exam. GARP Financial Risk Manager (FRM) exam. Certified Management Accountants exam
Inputs can be declared as param values. That lets a reader evaluate a different term or discount rate without editing the document’s underlying rules. The tutorial also says financial functions need explicit precision because their output precision cannot be inferred from their inputs. Without it, fmt and check refuse PMT, NPV, and IRR calculations. These are implementation details reported by the tutorial.
Calculate a loan payment with PMT
The tutorial’s loan example uses a principal of PLN 18,000.00, an annual interest rate of 6%, and three annual periods. With payment precision set to two decimal places, it reports an annual PMT of PLN 6,733.98.

Those inputs describe three yearly payments, not a monthly loan schedule. To model monthly payments, use a per-month interest rate and a number of monthly periods; do not pair an annual rate with monthly periods without converting the rate appropriately.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat rounding does to the schedule
The tutorial reports total payments of PLN 20,201.94 and total interest of PLN 2,201.93. Its final balance is -PLN 0.01, which it attributes to rounding each payment to cents. It also notes that total interest differs by one grosz from total paid minus the principal. Treat the figures as the tutorial’s displayed, rounded example rather than an exact zero-balance schedule.

Evaluate an investment with NPV and IRR
The investment example begins with an outflow of 50,000 at year zero, followed by inflows of 12,000, 15,000, 18,000, and 22,000 at years one through four. At an 8% discount rate per year, the tutorial reports an NPV of 4,430.83 and an IRR of 11.54%. The example does not specify a currency, so these amounts should not be assigned one.
Under these assumptions, the tutorial says that raising the discount rate above the IRR makes the investment fail its break-even test. This is a conclusion about this cash-flow sequence and its stated annual timing, not a general recommendation about whether an investment is worthwhile.

Run what-if scenarios without editing the document
The tutorial uses eval commands to apply scenario values and retrieve a requested output. Its reported results are:

| Scenario change | Reported output |
|---|---|
| Change the loan term from three to four periods, keeping the example’s other assumptions | Payment of 5,194.65 |
| Change the investment discount rate from 8% to 11%, keeping the example’s cash flows | NPV of 638.67 |
The loan scenario uses the example’s stated principal and annual setup; the tutorial does not restate a currency alongside the scenario payment. The investment scenario retains the year-zero-through-year-four cash-flow sequence. These are tutorial-reported outputs, not independently recalculated values.

When this approach is useful—and what it does not establish
Keeping rules beside the table they govern can make assumptions and derived values easier to inspect as a document changes. Parameterized inputs also provide a repeatable way to compare scenarios, while a check can flag a value that no longer matches its rule. For a comparison with a spreadsheet or another workflow, useful questions include whether rules stay alongside the data, whether inconsistencies are checked automatically, and how timing, cash-flow signs, and displayed precision are handled. The tutorial does not provide a comparative product evaluation.
The tutorial describes VisiMark as an MIT-licensed project with a browser playground and repository. Its claims about the workflow and example outputs are attributable to its author; the available sources do not establish independent testing. Do not confuse this software with Vizmark, whose company site describes a platform for private-market investing, portfolio data, and investor relations. The reviewed sources do not establish a connection between the two.
