To feed a web page to an AI agent as a screenshot, run a browser the application controls, capture the rendered page, and pass the image to the agent as an observation. The agent can then choose an action; after the browser acts, capture the changed page and repeat. For reliable results, pair screenshots with structured browser data such as accessibility snapshots: images show visual appearance, while structured snapshots are generally better for reading text and locating controls.
How screenshot-based browser observation works
A screenshot is not, by itself, a browser connection. Your application must provide or manage a browser or desktop runtime, execute the agent’s requested operations, and return the resulting image and other tool outputs. OpenAI documents both a hosted browser environment for its Agents API computer-use integration and caller-managed integrations using libraries such as Playwright or PyAutoGUI. - Start an appropriately controlled browser. Choose whether the browser is hosted by your agent platform or managed by your application. Decide which sites, accounts, and actions it may access.
- Navigate and capture an observation. Open the target page and capture the viewport, a relevant element, or the full page, depending on what the agent needs to see.
- Pass the observation to the agent. Include the screenshot in the model’s tool results or other supported image input, together with any useful structured page information.
- Execute the next action and observe again. The agent’s task is an iterative observe–act loop. Keep the browser session available across calls when later actions depend on earlier navigation, form entries, or page state.
- Verify the result. Inspect the final browser state and confirm that the requested change or outcome actually occurred.

Choose screenshots, structured snapshots, or both
Use the observation that answers the agent’s immediate question. A screenshot represents rendered pixels; an accessibility snapshot represents exposed page structure and text. Neither is a universal substitute for the other.

Playwright documents screenshots for full-page and element capture, as well as visual uses such as charts and bug records; its guidance also points to accessibility snapshots for structure and text. The Playwright MCP documentation cautions that screenshots are for looking, not acting: use browser_snapshot to obtain references for interaction. Capture the right scope and keep state deliberately
Viewport screenshots
A viewport capture is appropriate when the decision concerns what is currently visible: for example, whether a dialog obscures a button or whether a page has loaded into the expected state. It is also a compact observation for repeated loops. It will not show content outside the current viewport.
Full-page screenshots
Capture the full scrollable page when the task requires an overview of a long page or a visual record beyond the current screen. Full-page capture does not replace navigation and interaction: it does not tell the agent which control to activate, and dynamic or lazy-loaded content may need to be brought into view before it appears. Playwright supports full-page screenshots and screenshots of selected elements.

Element screenshots
Capture a specific element when the visual question is localized, such as inspecting a chart or a particular panel. Element images reduce irrelevant visual context, but the application must identify the target element reliably; use structured browser references where available.
Persistent sessions
For multi-step tasks, preserve the same browser environment between observations when possible. Recreating the browser on every turn can discard navigation, cookies, entered form data, and other state that the agent expects to build on. The appropriate persistence boundary depends on the task and your security design; do not reuse a privileged session merely for convenience.
Build a safe and dependable agent loop
- Treat page content as untrusted input. Text on a page, in a document, or in a tool result is data to inspect, not authority to alter the user’s instructions or grant new permissions. OpenAI’s computer-use guidance makes this distinction explicit.
- Isolate and limit browser access. Use an isolated browser or VM where appropriate, and restrict the sites and actions to what the task requires.
- Be careful with logged-in profiles. Chrome for Developers warns that DevTools for agents exposes browser content to the agent and that an agent connected to an active authenticated session can act on the user’s behalf. - Require confirmation for consequential actions. Keep purchases, data transmission, destructive edits, and similarly consequential operations behind an explicit confirmation step.
- Check outcomes rather than trusting the last action. Review browser activity and inspect the resulting state to catch failed clicks, validation errors, or unexpected navigation.

Troubleshooting screenshot-based agents
The agent receives no image or cannot inspect it
Confirm that the browser operation returns screenshot data and that your integration passes it to the model in the image format expected by the model or agent API. Returning a file path or text description alone is not the same as supplying the image observation. Check the tool result at the boundary between browser execution and model input.
The screenshot does not show the relevant content
Check whether the target is below the fold, inside an element, or rendered only after interaction. Choose full-page or element capture when that matches the task, and scroll or wait for the relevant state when necessary. For an interaction decision, pair the image with a structured snapshot rather than expecting the screenshot to provide stable control references.

The page looks right but the agent cannot find a control
Use an accessibility snapshot or browser reference for text, roles, and interaction targeting. A screenshot is a visual observation, not a reliable selector or semantic control map. If the site does not expose useful structure, the agent may need visual reasoning, but the integration should still verify actions and results.
The agent loses progress between steps
Keep the browser environment and its session state available across calls for a task that depends on previous interactions. Check whether your hosting integration resets the context, profile, or page between tool calls.
The agent follows instructions found on a page
Enforce the instruction hierarchy in the agent: website text and tool results are untrusted content and cannot authorize changing the task or permissions. Limit browser access and require confirmation for consequential actions.

A click or submission may have failed
Do not infer success from the action request. Take another observation, inspect the resulting page or structured state, and handle validation messages, navigation changes, or other unexpected outcomes before proceeding.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The official implementation guidance describes capabilities and design practices, not a controlled benchmark comparing screenshot-based agents with DOM-based agents. There is no supported accuracy, latency, or cost advantage to quote universally. In practice, capture only the scope needed for the current decision, use structured data for text and targeting where it works, and preserve a session only as long as the task needs it. Those choices reduce unnecessary work without assuming that a particular observation method is always faster or more reliable.
