Save progress is less certain: it can return only if the game has a usable Cloud Backup. Check backups before erasing, and don’t treat a listed game purchase as proof its save is protected.
What a factory reset removes—and what it doesn’t
A factory reset is irreversible. It erases downloaded games and content, account information, and other data stored on the headset. It does not remove content purchased through your Meta Account. After resetting, sign in to the account that owns each game and reinstall it; the game will not remain installed on the cleared headset. Meta’s reset instructions describe these effects.

Purchases and saved progress are separate. A purchased game can be available to reinstall even if its local save is gone. Save recovery depends on whether the app participates in Cloud Backup, whether it includes the relevant save data in its backup, and whether a usable backup exists.

Inspect Cloud Backup
- Connect the headset to Wi-Fi and power. Open Settings > System > Backup; labels can vary with software versions.
- Confirm Cloud Backup is enabled and look for the games whose progress matters. Check whether each has a recent backup. You can also inspect available backups on the Meta Quest Cloud Backups page.
- For an important game without a recent backup, check the game developer’s support guidance before wiping the headset. Meta’s platform documentation cannot establish whether an individual game’s current save is protected.
- Where the Cloud Backup panel offers it, request a manual backup before resetting. Do not assume an automatic backup ran just before you began: automatic backups happen at system-defined times and require conditions such as the headset being idle, charging, and on Wi-Fi.
Meta says Cloud Backup requires Horizon OS v35 or later. Its developer guidance describes a maximum of 100 MB per backup; the save-game best-practices reference specifies a 100 MiB ceiling. Apps can opt out, omit save data, store it outside supported locations, or exceed the limit, so the presence of Cloud Backup does not guarantee that every game save is included. Don’t confuse backup with live sync
Cloud Backup is not continuous synchronization between headsets. Meta keeps backup history per app, device, and person. When you install an app, the system looks for a backup for that device; if it finds none, it can restore the latest backup from another device you own. You can also choose a backup or copy it to another device from the Cloud Backups page. This behavior is described in Meta’s platform services documentation.
Choose the reset method that fits your situation
Meta describes a factory reset as a last resort for device problems. Try a software update or a hard reboot first; Meta’s guidance says to hold the Power button for 30 seconds for a hard reboot. If a reset is still needed, charge the headset to at least 50% before proceeding. Meta’s current reset guide has the official steps.

Reset with the headset buttons
- Turn the headset off.
- Hold Power and Volume Down together until the boot screen appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory Reset, then press Power to select it.
- Highlight Yes and press Power to confirm.
Reset through the paired Meta Horizon app
This option requires the headset to be paired with the app. Open Menu > Devices, select the headset, then go to Headset settings > Advanced settings > Factory reset > Reset. App labels may move as Meta updates the interface.

Reset a lost or stolen headset remotely
In Meta Account device settings, select the headset and choose Delete device data or Factory reset, then complete identity verification. The reset takes effect the next time the headset comes online. The option may not appear on software versions that do not support remote reset.

Restore games and eligible saves after the reset
- Set up the headset and sign in to the Meta Account that owns the games.
- Reinstall the games from that account.
- Allow an eligible Cloud Backup to restore when the app is installed. If progress is missing, check the Cloud Backups page for other available versions.
Meta says deleting a cloud backup is permanent, so do not remove backups casually while troubleshooting. Older guidance about Cloud Storage V2 is no longer applicable: Meta shut that service down on January 31, 2025. Users who did not migrate affected saves before shutdown lost access to that legacy cloud-save data. Meta also notes that some apps opted out of Cloud Backup and some Rift or Go use cases may have saves stored locally only; see the Cloud Storage deprecation information.
