AMD Wants to Challenge NVIDIA Like Samsung Challenged Apple—Can It?

AMD wants to offer customers a credible alternative to NVIDIA, but its growth and product plans do not yet establish a Samsung–Apple-style outcome.

AMD is trying to become a credible, large-scale alternative to NVIDIA in AI computing, but the Samsung–Apple comparison is an ambition, not an established parallel. AMD has growing data-center sales and a broad plan built around Instinct accelerators, EPYC processors, networking, rack-scale systems and ROCm software. Those facts show momentum; they do not show that AMD has overtaken NVIDIA or that it will follow Samsung’s path in smartphones.

What the Samsung–Apple analogy does—and doesn’t—mean

The useful question behind the headline is whether AMD can give customers a durable alternative to an entrenched competitor. In this case, that means more than designing a fast accelerator: customers also need software support, enough supply, a workable system design and confidence that the platform will suit their workloads.

The available evidence does not establish a specific historical comparison between Samsung and Apple in smartphones, so the analogy should not be read as a claim that AMD is repeating Samsung’s strategy or is on track to match its results. Nor does “alternative” necessarily mean market leader, equal market share or an ecosystem as widely adopted as NVIDIA’s.

How much momentum does AMD have?

Reported growth is real, but it is not a market-share result

AMD reported $34.6 billion in total revenue for fiscal 2025, up 34% from 2024, and $16.6 billion in data-center revenue, up 32%. AMD attributed the data-center increase primarily to demand for fifth-generation EPYC processors and Instinct MI350-series GPUs. These figures are from AMD’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 4, 2026.

In the quarter ended June 27, 2026, AMD reported $11.5 billion in revenue, up 50% year over year, including $6.7 billion in data-center revenue, up 107%. These are company-reported quarterly results, not an independent measure of AI accelerator share or proof that AMD has passed NVIDIA. See AMD’s Q2 2026 financial results.

AMD also reported $14.6 billion in 2025 Client and Gaming revenue, up 51%. Gaming revenue within that segment was $3.9 billion, also up 51%; AMD cited higher semi-custom revenue and demand for Radeon gaming GPUs as primary drivers. Radeon matters to AMD’s consumer gaming strategy, but a gaming graphics card is not a substitute for an Instinct data-center accelerator. The figures and attribution appear in the same 2025 Form 10-K.

What AMD is building to compete

A portfolio, not just a GPU

AMD’s stated approach spans Instinct accelerators, EPYC server CPUs, networking, rack-scale systems and software. At its November 11, 2025 Financial Analyst Day, AMD said MI350 GPUs were deployed at scale by leading cloud providers, including Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The company also said Helios systems using MI450-series GPUs were expected to begin in Q3 2026. That was a forward-looking schedule announced in 2025; the materials cited here do not establish whether the timing was met by October 4, 2026. AMD’s strategy announcement describes the plan.

At the same event, AMD set long-term targets of greater than 35% company revenue CAGR and greater than 60% data-center revenue CAGR over the next three to five years. These are management targets, not achieved growth rates or guarantees.

ROCm is central to the software challenge

ROCm is AMD’s software platform for work across Ryzen, Radeon and Instinct products. AMD presents it as part of an open software strategy and, in its Q2 2026 materials, highlighted a “Production-Grade AMD ROCm Software Stack” and “Open Software Platforms & Developer Enablement.” Those are AMD’s descriptions of its strategy, not independent proof of feature parity with NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem or equivalent developer adoption.

The software question is practical: can a team run its frameworks and libraries on the target system, port existing code without excessive effort, and get the support it needs? The OECD identifies NVIDIA’s first-mover advantage, performance and CUDA software as factors in AMD’s difficulty catching up, and describes AMD as NVIDIA’s most direct rival in GPU chip design. That analysis is useful context, but it is time-bounded rather than a current market-share audit. Read the OECD paper on competition in AI infrastructure alongside AMD’s description of its open software and developer strategy.

What is Samsung supplying to AMD?

Samsung’s role is more concrete than the analogy: on March 18, 2026, AMD and Samsung announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) covering AI memory and computing technologies. The announcement says the companies will align on primary HBM4 supply for AMD’s next-generation MI455X accelerator and work on advanced DDR5 solutions for sixth-generation EPYC processors, codenamed Venice. It also says they will discuss possible Samsung foundry services for future AMD products. A discussion of potential foundry work is not a completed foundry agreement, and the MOU does not prove that memory has shipped or been delivered in particular volumes.

Samsung and AMD described the planned HBM4 as supporting speeds of up to 13 Gbps and maximum bandwidth of 3.3 TB/s. These are vendor-announced specifications, not independent measurements of a deployed system. AMD CEO Lisa Su said in the announcement: “Powering the next generation of AI infrastructure requires deep collaboration across the industry.” The AMD–Samsung announcement dates the statement and outlines the collaboration.

How to judge AMD against NVIDIA for an AI workload

There is no universal winner established by the evidence here: no independent, workload-specific benchmark set verifies that one platform is faster or cheaper across the board. A useful comparison has to hold the workload and system conditions constant.

  1. Match the workload. Compare the same model, precision, software version, batch size and task—such as training or serving. A result for one configuration does not settle performance for another.
  2. Check the software path. Verify framework and library support, compatibility with existing code, portability work and the engineering effort needed to maintain the deployment. CUDA and ROCm ecosystems affect switching costs as well as the developer experience.
  3. Compare complete systems. Consider memory capacity and bandwidth, networking, power and rack design, rather than relying on a single accelerator specification. AMD’s Helios and MI450 plans and the MI455X memory collaboration are forward-looking context, not proof of an available, delivered system.
  4. Confirm economics and supply. Compare the cost of the systems actually offered, support arrangements, deployment capacity and delivery dates. AMD’s own annual filing discusses competitive, supply and other business risks; its description is a company risk disclosure, not neutral market research.
  5. Put every result in context. Record the test date, hardware, software and configuration. Treat company-reported financial results as results, company specifications as claims, and management growth forecasts as targets.

AMD’s filing says NVIDIA uses its data-center GPU position, financial resources and proprietary software ecosystem to promote its systems and influence customers. It also warns that competitors’ bundling, allocation, pricing, interoperability and partnerships can make alternatives harder to choose. Those are AMD’s risk disclosures, not an independent assessment; the filing sets out that perspective.
