How to Factory Reset a Samsung Tablet Safely

Back up your data, choose the right reset method for your Galaxy tablet, and know what account verification to expect during setup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To factory reset an accessible Galaxy tablet, open Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset, review what will be erased, then tap Reset and confirm Delete all if prompted. Back up anything you want to keep first: a factory reset erases personal data stored on the tablet. If you cannot use Settings, use the recovery-button instructions for your exact model; remote erase is available only when it was set up and the tablet meets the service requirements.

Choose the right kind of reset

A factory reset is intended to return the tablet to its initial setup state by removing its personal data. It is different from resetting selected settings or network connections, which can address narrower problems without deleting apps and personal data.

Option Best for What it does
Factory data reset in Settings The tablet works and you can navigate its menus Deletes personal data; lock or account credentials may be requested. Samsung U.S. support
Recovery-menu reset You cannot use normal Settings navigation Wipes user data; button combinations and menu labels vary by model. Samsung U.K. support
Remote erase with SmartThings Find or Samsung Find The tablet is lost or cannot be operated directly Erases data if service and device prerequisites are met; remote management ends after erasure. Samsung lost-device guidance
Reset all settings or network settings A problem is limited to configuration, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile connectivity, or accessibility preferences Resets selected preferences while keeping apps and personal data. Availability and labels vary. Samsung U.S. support

Before you erase the tablet

  • Save what you want to keep. Photos, videos, documents, apps, and other personal data on the tablet can be erased. Confirm that any backup you need is complete and accessible; the reset itself is not a backup. Samsung’s reset guide links to backup instructions.
  • Check for an encrypted microSD card, if your model uses one. Samsung’s U.S. guide advises decrypting an encrypted card before resetting. Otherwise, the tablet may not be able to read its data afterward.
  • If you are handing the tablet to someone else, remove your Google account first when possible. This can help avoid Google device protection asking for the previously registered account during setup.
  • Be ready to verify accounts. Depending on the tablet and reset route, you may be asked for the screen-lock credentials, Samsung account password, or Google account previously registered on the device.

Reset a Samsung tablet from Settings

  1. Open Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset.
  2. Read the list of affected data and follow the on-screen prompts. Tap Reset, then Delete all if those confirmations appear.
  3. Enter the screen-lock credentials or Samsung account password if requested. Samsung notes that network access is needed to log out of a Samsung account in the reset flow.
  4. Wait for the tablet to restart to its initial setup screen.

Menu names and placement depend on the model and software version. If the path differs, search Settings for Factory data reset. Samsung’s U.S. guide says its screenshots were made on a Galaxy S24+ running Android 15 and One UI 7; that screenshot context does not guarantee the same layout on a Galaxy tablet.

Reset with recovery buttons when Settings is unavailable

Use recovery mode only when normal Settings navigation is not possible. The button sequence and recovery-screen wording differ across Galaxy tablet models, so follow Samsung’s official instructions for the exact model rather than relying on a generic button combination.

  1. Find the recovery instructions for your specific Galaxy tablet model in Samsung support.
  2. Follow that model’s steps to enter the recovery menu.
  3. Use the controls indicated on screen to select Wipe data/factory reset or its equivalent, then confirm as directed.
  4. Allow the tablet to restart and proceed through setup.

Choosing the wipe option deletes user data. If the display is broken, the tablet will not power on, or recovery mode cannot be reached, a reset is not guaranteed to be possible; contact Samsung support or seek service assistance for the model and condition.

Erase a lost tablet remotely

SmartThings Find or Samsung Find may let you erase a tablet through their websites or a Galaxy device, but only if the necessary Samsung account and remote-finding setup were in place. Power and network connectivity also affect what the service can do. Samsung says an offline device may show only its last known location.

  1. Open the appropriate Samsung finding service and sign in to the Samsung account associated with the tablet.
  2. Select the tablet and choose Erase data, then complete any account verification requested.
  3. Understand that once the erase is complete, you can no longer manage that device through the finding service.

This is not a guaranteed workaround for an unconfigured or offline tablet. After a reset, Google device protection may also require the Google account previously registered on the device during setup.

What happens after the reset?

The tablet restarts to its initial setup screen. If Google device protection is active, setup may require the Google account that was previously registered on the tablet. A Samsung account password may also be required during the reset flow. If you are the owner but cannot pass account verification, use Samsung support for help with your device and account rather than assuming another reset will remove the check.

Use a narrower reset for a narrower problem

If your goal is to troubleshoot a configuration issue rather than remove all personal data, check the other options under Settings → General management → Reset. Samsung lists options such as Reset all settings and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth or mobile network resets. These are distinct from Factory data reset and preserve apps and personal data, although they reset the selected preferences. Exact options vary by device and software version.

Why steps can differ between Galaxy tablets

Samsung’s guidance covers different regions, models, and software versions. Its U.K. reset instructions were updated on 2026-05-14, while the tablet-specific Philippines guidance was published on 2022-06-22. Treat the on-device menu and the current Samsung instructions for your model and country as authoritative when labels or steps differ; do not assume a button combination published for another model will work on yours.
