The reset erases local data. It also does not recover your forgotten Google Account password, and it does not remove school or work management.
Which problem are you actually solving?
“Reset without a password” covers three different situations. Each one has a different fix.

If you only forgot your password
A Powerwash does not retrieve or change your Google Account password. Google’s “Fix sign-in problems” help page sends forgotten-password cases to Google Account recovery. Recover the account first. You may not need to wipe anything. If you reset anyway, you will still need valid Google credentials to set the device up again. After the reset, the account you sign in with becomes the device’s owner account.
Powerwash from the sign-in screen
- Back up what you can. A factory reset erases all user data on the Chromebook’s drive, including everything in the Downloads folder. Files in Google Drive and on external storage are not erased by Powerwash. Without a password you may not be able to sign in to copy files off. If so, accept that anything stored only locally will be lost.
- At the sign-in screen, press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
- Select Restart.
- In the dialog that appears, choose Powerwash, then Continue.
- Follow the on-screen setup prompts. The Google Account you use now becomes the owner account.
The shortcut and menu path come from Google’s “Reset your Chromebook to factory settings” page. Samsung does not have a separate software procedure for current Chromebooks.

School- or work-managed Samsung Chromebooks
If an organization manages the device, the ordinary reset flow is not available to you. Resetting is not a way around management. Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education documentation puts wiping and re-enrollment in the administrator’s hands. Contact your IT admin. They can wipe the device and re-enroll it, or reset your account access.
If the Chromebook shows a missing or damaged ChromeOS error
This is a recovery job, not a Powerwash. Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases the local drive. Google says some newer devices can recover over the internet. Others need USB recovery media.

Entering recovery mode
Google’s general sequence is Esc + Refresh, then press and release Power. Some models use Esc + Maximize instead. Samsung models vary, so don’t assume one key combination works on every Samsung Chromebook. Follow the on-screen prompts.
Making USB recovery media
You need a second computer: another Chromebook, or a Windows or Mac machine running Chrome. You also need a USB flash drive that can hold at least 8 GB. Creating the recovery media erases the drive, so use one with nothing on it you need. The drive is only for this optional recovery route. It is not needed for a normal Powerwash, and it can’t bypass account sign-in or device management.

Legacy Samsung Series 5 hardware reset
Google’s “Reset your Chromebook hardware” page lists special hardware-reset steps for the old Samsung Series 5 and Samsung Series 5 550. They involve a paperclip-like object. A hardware reset is a different thing from a factory reset, and those steps are specific to those models. Don’t apply them to a current Samsung Chromebook.
