A Pixel factory reset erases data stored on the phone. Before you erase it, check that the right Google Account has a recent backup and that you can sign in; then reset from Settings if possible and restore during setup. What returns depends on what was backed up, the apps involved and Android-version compatibility.
Choose the right option before you reset

Before erasing: check backup, account and power
Google warns that a factory data reset erases all data from the phone. Anything not backed up or synced elsewhere may be lost, so verify the account and backup before proceeding. Google’s factory-reset guidance also says to have the Google Account and password ready, along with the screen-lock PIN, pattern or password if one is set. If you recently changed your Google Account password, wait 24 hours before resetting.

Verify the backup and synced data
- On the Pixel, open Settings > Google services > Backup > Backup details and check the backup information.
- You can also check the last device-backup date in Google Drive under Storage > Backups.
- Check Google Photos and Google Contacts separately if your photos, videos or contacts matter. Those services can sync independently of the device backup.
- If you rely on Timeline, confirm its separate backup setting. Google says changes can take a few days to appear in that backup.
Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS among the categories Android can back up automatically; additional items may depend on particular Google apps. App support varies, and not every app can back up or restore all its settings and data. See Google’s Android backup and restore guidance.
Prepare the phone
- Charge the phone to at least 70% and connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Google says a reset can take up to an hour, and you need an internet connection after reset to sign in. Google Pixel Phone Help.
- Make sure you can sign in to the same Google Account used for the backup from another device, if possible. A backup is not useful if you cannot access its account.
- If the reset is for troubleshooting rather than disposal, try other remedies first. Google’s computer tool may update Android without resetting a Pixel 4a or later, including Fold.
Factory reset from Settings
Use this route when the phone is working and you can navigate Settings. It is also Google’s stated route for preparing a phone for trade-in.

- Open Settings.
- Tap System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).
- Tap Erase all data. Enter the screen-lock PIN if prompted, then confirm.
- When the reset finishes, choose the option to restart the phone.
- Continue through the initial setup and restore data from your backup when prompted.
Menu wording can vary by software version. If you cannot reach these settings, use the Fastboot and Recovery procedure below.
Reset when Settings is unavailable
Google’s button-based procedure uses Fastboot and Android Recovery. Turn the Pixel off first. Google’s reset instructions distinguish the entry buttons by generation:

- Pixel 6 and later: Hold Volume down and Power for up to 30 seconds, until Fastboot appears.
- Earlier Pixel devices: Hold Volume up and Power.
If you hold the buttons too long, the phone may restart; power it off and try again.

- At the No command screen, hold Power, press Volume up, then release both buttons quickly.
- In Android Recovery, select Wipe data/factory reset and confirm Factory data reset.
- When wiping completes, select Reboot system now.
Erase a locked Pixel remotely
If you cannot unlock the phone, Google documents erasing it through another device. Remote erase requires the Pixel to have power, a mobile-data or Wi-Fi connection, a signed-in Google Account, Find Hub enabled and visibility on Google Play. If those conditions are not met, use the button-based Recovery procedure instead. Follow Google’s instructions for a locked Pixel.
To restore a Google Account backup afterward, you may need the device PIN or pattern that was in use when the backup was made. A remote erase does not bypass the need to authenticate to the account associated with the backup.
Restore data after the reset
Restore during initial setup
- When the Pixel restarts, connect it to Wi-Fi or mobile data during setup.
- Sign in to the Google Account associated with the backup.
- Follow the restore prompts and select the backup from the previous device. You may be able to choose which available data categories to restore.
- If prompted, confirm the old Pixel’s screen lock to continue restoring protected data.
Google’s Pixel backup and restore instructions describe this setup flow. The restore can take time; Google’s Android guidance says it may take up to 24 hours to complete fully. A backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version, and the transfer to a lower-version destination may be incomplete. Google Android Help.

Restore after setup on Pixel 9 and later

- Select the previous device or scan its QR code.
- Choose the data to copy and follow the prompts.
Google says this method can restore from only one previous device. To restore from a different previous device, you must reset the Pixel again. See Google’s Pixel restore instructions.

For repair, consider Repair Mode instead of a reset
If the phone is going to a repair technician, a factory reset may not be necessary. Google Repair Mode provides a limited clean Android environment intended to let technicians service an eligible Pixel without accessing personal data through the normal profile. Google lists eligibility as Android 14 with the December 2023 update or later and at least 2 GB of free space. Check the device and current steps in Google’s Repair Mode instructions.
When Google’s computer tool is relevant
Google’s Update & Software Repair tool is a separate option for Pixel 4a and later, including Fold. It may manually install an Android update without resetting the phone, or reset the device to the latest Android version. The reset option still deletes data, so back up first and restore afterward. This tool requires a computer and a USB cord that connects to the phone; that requirement does not apply to a normal Settings reset or the button-based Fastboot reset. See Google’s tool instructions.
