How to Factory Reset a Google Home or Nest Device Without the App

Google Home and Nest devices use different physical reset controls. Identify your model, follow its button sequence, and know what a factory reset erases.

You can factory reset a supported Google Home or Nest speaker or display without the Google Home app, but the button sequence depends on the model. Identify your device first, then use its physical controls below. Google says neither voice commands nor the Google Home app can start a factory reset.

Before you reset: confirm the model and what will be erased

These steps cover the Google Home and Nest speakers and displays listed below. They do not cover Chromecast or Google TV Streamer, which have separate reset instructions. Check the device’s name and physical design before pressing anything; there is no single reset combination for every model.

A factory reset clears data from the device, returns it to factory settings, and disconnects it from members of the home. Data associated with the device, such as video history, is deleted, though some basic device data may remain connected to the home. The reset cannot be undone. If you have a Nest Hub Max, save any video history you want to keep before proceeding.

Google recommends troubleshooting or rebooting before a factory reset. To reboot without the app, unplug the power cord, leave it unplugged for one minute, then reconnect it. A reboot is not a factory reset and does not perform the same data-clearing operation. See Google’s reboot instructions.

Find your device’s physical reset control

Use the matching model below. For devices that require the microphone to be off first, switch it off using the device’s physical mic switch; on applicable speakers, orange indicates the microphone is off. Google’s touch-control guide notes that the Nest Mini (2nd gen) has a wall-mount screw slot on its back, while the Google Home Mini (1st gen) does not.

Device Physical control and location Hold time and confirmation
Google Home Speaker (2026) Switch the microphone off using the switch on the bottom. Press and hold the top center. After five seconds, the reset process begins. Continue holding for about ten seconds more, until you hear the confirmation sound.
Google Nest Audio Switch the microphone off at the back. Press and hold the center near the top. After five seconds, the reset process begins. Continue holding for about ten seconds more, until you hear the confirmation sound.
Google Nest Mini (2nd gen) Switch the microphone off on the side. Press and hold the center of the top, where the lights are. After five seconds, the reset process begins. Continue holding for about ten seconds more, until you hear the confirmation sound.
Google Home Mini (1st gen) Hold the small reset button on the bottom, below the power cord and near the etched circle. After five seconds, the reset begins. Continue holding for about ten seconds more, until you hear the confirmation sound.
Google Home Max Hold the reset button on the back, near the power cord. About 12 seconds.
Google Home speaker (original) Hold the microphone mute button on the back. About 15 seconds; the device announces that it is resetting.
Google Nest Hub and Nest Hub (2nd gen) Hold both volume buttons on the back at the same time. About 10 seconds.
Google Nest Hub Max Hold both volume buttons on the back at the same time. About 10 seconds. Google recommends saving important video history and removing the device from the Google Home app before resetting.

Reset the device without using the app

  1. Identify the exact model. Match its name and physical features to the table. If the controls do not match, stop rather than trying a guessed button combination.
  2. Prepare anything you need to keep. A factory reset cannot be reversed. For Nest Hub Max, Google recommends saving important video history before resetting.
  3. Use the physical control for your model. Turn off the microphone first if the table says to, then press and hold the specified button or touch area for that model’s stated time.
  4. Wait for the device’s confirmation. Where the instructions specify a sound or spoken announcement, use that as your cue that the reset is underway.

The Nest Hub Max has a preparation wrinkle: Google recommends removing it from the Google Home app before resetting. Its reset itself is done with the rear volume buttons, but following that removal recommendation requires app access. If you cannot use the app, the physical reset procedure is still the one Google lists; the guidance does not establish that the preparatory removal can be completed without the app.

Check the reset indication if you are unsure

Use the sound or spoken message specified for your model rather than assuming every device signals the same way. Google’s speaker-light guide says a pulsing yellow light ring indicates that a factory reset is being performed, while an orange light ring on applicable speakers means the microphone is off. Light meanings vary among devices, so the ring pattern is not a universal confirmation method for every speaker and display. See Google’s guide to speaker lights.

If the buttons or timing do not match

  • Recheck the model name and generation, especially if you are deciding between a Nest Mini (2nd gen) and a Google Home Mini (1st gen).
  • Do not substitute another model’s button sequence. Google links model-specific reset troubleshooting from its factory-reset support page.
  • If you only meant to restart a device to address a problem, unplug it for one minute and reconnect it instead of performing the irreversible factory reset.
