Treat an AI-generated study notebook as a draft, not as evidence. Check each factual claim against the cited source, confirm that the reference is real and relevant, and restore any qualifications the summary has dropped. For important or consequential claims, corroborate them with authoritative sources or a qualified reviewer.
How to check an AI-generated study notebook
- Set the purpose and stakes. Decide how you will use the notes and how much review the use requires. A casual revision aid needs less scrutiny than material used in a report or decision. The House of Commons Library says AI should assist rather than act as an authority, and cannot replace professional judgment, subject expertise, or trusted sources.
- Break the notes into individual claims. Mark each factual proposition separately. Pay particular attention to names, dates, figures, quotations, causal claims, and statements about what a study found. A fluent paragraph can bundle several claims that need different evidence; check each one.
- Confirm that every cited source exists. Follow the notebook’s links and check titles, authors, publication details, and DOI information where supplied. A plausible-looking reference is not proof that a work exists or supports the claim. The University of Nevada, Reno Libraries advises checking whether sources and people named by generative AI are real.
- Read the original passage in context. Compare the claim with the cited passage, not just a search result or the notebook’s description. Check whether the passage actually supports the wording, whether any quotation is exact, and whether relevant qualifications, population, date, or context have been omitted. Reno Libraries recommends tracing claims and quotations to their original context; UCLA HumTech warns that AI can produce fabricated citations and quotes.
- Check currency and corroboration. If a claim can change, establish whether its source is current. For important claims, seek independent confirmation in reputable coverage, a primary document, or a subject-specific database as appropriate. Compare sources for whether they verify or contradict the notebook’s claim.
- Record a verdict and next action for each claim. Keep an audit table so the check is visible and repeatable:

- Escalate uncertain or consequential claims. If a claim is specialized, disputed, ambiguous, or high-stakes, ask a subject expert or librarian rather than guessing. Revise or remove unsupported wording, and take responsibility for the final notes. The House of Commons Library recommends expert review and human judgment; the American Library Association says AI must not replace staff judgment or accountability.
When the notebook summarizes a study
Use the original paper to check what was studied and what its findings actually establish. Compare the notebook with the study’s question, population or materials, methods, results, limitations, and stated scope. Look for changes in meaning: an association presented as causation, a qualified finding turned into a universal rule, or a result from one setting applied to a different population.
For important or disputed conclusions, check an authoritative review or other independent sources. If several studies or accounts address the claim, compare their authority and closeness to the original evidence, publication dates, populations, contexts, and methods. Ask whether they independently support or contradict the notebook rather than counting how many summaries repeat the same claim.

What AI can—and cannot—do in a source check
AI can help organize or summarize documents you provide. UCLA describes generated summaries as a quick overview or review aid, but warns they can flatten nuance or misrepresent an author’s argument. Return to the document whenever the exact meaning matters.
Do not treat a second AI answer as the final arbiter of whether the first notebook is accurate. Generated text can sound plausible while being incorrect, incomplete, or misleading, including through fabricated citations. The House of Commons Library recommends checking claims against reputable sources; UCLA advises using trusted references for facts, dates, statistics, and quotations, and not asking an LLM to verify whether a citation or quotation is accurate.

Protect private material and keep human oversight
Before uploading student work, unpublished research, or confidential material to a commercial AI tool, consider whether the material can safely be shared. UCLA specifically flags privacy as a concern. For classroom, library, or public-facing material, establish meaningful human review before use; the American Library Association calls for verification of AI-generated claims and human accountability.
