Bitcoin Could Rise More Than 250% by 2029, One Fidelity Executive Forecasts

One Fidelity executive reportedly sees Bitcoin at $300,000 in 2029. The forecast implies about 257% upside from an October 2026 reference price, not a guaranteed return or analyst consensus.

The cryptocurrency in the headline is Bitcoin (BTC). The Motley Fool reported on October 3, 2026, that Jurrien Timmer, Fidelity’s director of global macro, sees a possible Bitcoin price of $300,000 in 2029. The article compared that target with a reference price of about $84,500, implying roughly 257% upside if the target is reached. That is one executive’s reported forecast—not a Wall Street consensus, a current return calculation, or a promised gain.

What the $300,000 Bitcoin forecast means

Emma Newbery’s October 3, 2026 article in The Motley Fool attributes a $300,000 Bitcoin target for 2029 to Jurrien Timmer of Fidelity. The article’s roughly 257% upside figure is calculated from an approximately $84,500 reference price used in that article. It is tied to that reference point and publication date; it does not describe Bitcoin’s current price or the gain available to someone buying at a different price.

The headline’s plural “Wall Street analysts” overstates what this specific forecast establishes. It identifies one named executive’s view, not a survey or consensus among analysts. The Motley Fool is the source for the attribution; the cited material does not independently confirm the forecast in a primary Fidelity publication.

Why the bullish case is conditional

Scarcity may support the thesis, but does not set the price

Bitcoin’s protocol limits total issuance. A Bitwise Bitcoin ETF Form 10-K filed with the SEC in 2026 describes a 21 million BTC limit and approximately 19.9 million BTC outstanding as of December 2025. Those figures describe supply, not future value. Scarcity can matter only alongside demand: a capped supply does not ensure that investors will want Bitcoin, or that its price will rise.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

The store-of-value argument remains a thesis

The bullish argument in the Motley Fool article is that Bitcoin could gain from its limited issuance and its role as a potential store of value, including if investors direct a small share of alternative-asset portfolios toward it. That scenario depends on continued investor interest and allocation. The article also characterizes Bitcoin as volatile and speculative and says it has not yet proved the “digital gold” case. The possible $300,000 outcome is therefore a forecast to assess, not an established result.

Bitcoin is not stock: ways to get exposure

Bitcoin itself is a cryptoasset, not a company share. A spot Bitcoin ETF share is a security designed to provide exposure to Bitcoin and comes with fund-specific features and risks. The choice is not simply between two interchangeable ways to buy the same thing.

Consideration Owning BTC directly Holding a spot Bitcoin ETF
Custody and keys You or your chosen custodian must safeguard the Bitcoin and access credentials; losing control can mean losing access. The fund and its service providers handle custody of the underlying Bitcoin. You hold fund shares, not the private keys to that Bitcoin.
Fees and tracking No fund expense ratio, though a trading platform may charge transaction or other fees. Fund fees and tracking differences vary by product; check its current prospectus and fee schedule. The cited SEC filing discusses product risks but does not establish current fees for all funds.
Trading and liquidity Bitcoin markets operate beyond conventional stock-market hours; liquidity and access depend on the platform and market. ETF shares trade on an exchange during its trading hours. Share price, spreads, and liquidity can differ from the value of the Bitcoin held.
Tax and availability Tax treatment and access depend on your jurisdiction and circumstances. Tax treatment, product availability, and account rules also vary by jurisdiction and product. The cited sources do not provide jurisdiction-specific tax guidance.
Risks beyond price moves Platform failure, custody mistakes, regulation, and Bitcoin volatility can affect ownership. Bitcoin volatility remains, alongside fund, custody, tracking, market, issuer, and regulatory risks.

The Bitwise filing discusses volatility, custody, and regulatory risks; it is one issuer’s disclosure, not a complete comparison of every Bitcoin product or jurisdiction. Before choosing an ETF, review that fund’s current prospectus, fees, custody arrangements, and trading details. For direct ownership, understand how the platform or wallet stores and restores access before transferring funds.

How to judge whether the forecast fits your decision

  • Treat the target as a scenario. The $300,000 figure is a reported 2029 forecast. It is not a floor, a guarantee, or evidence that Bitcoin will follow a particular path.
  • Use a current price for any personal calculation. The article’s approximately $84,500 reference price is dated October 3, 2026. A prospective return calculation must use the price at which you could actually buy, plus relevant costs.
  • Decide how much loss you could tolerate. A speculative, volatile asset may fall sharply; do not let an upside target substitute for a risk limit or a diversified plan.
  • Choose the form of exposure deliberately. Direct BTC involves key and custody decisions; an ETF adds fund structure, fees, and share-market considerations.
