To collect teaching jobs automatically, first check each district’s recruiting platform and state education agency for an official RSS feed, JSON feed, API, or statewide educator job board. Use those structured sources where available. For districts that publish only a careers page, schedule a site-specific collector, normalize and deduplicate its records, and retain each original listing URL and the time it was last observed. A posting’s disappearance is not proof that a vacancy was filled.
The examples below focus on the United States; state-board coverage varies, and this is not a universal guide to job boards in other countries.

Start with official feeds and educator job boards
Before parsing HTML, inspect the school district’s careers page, its recruiting vendor, and the state education agency’s job-search resources. Ask whether the source provides RSS, JSON, an API, or a downloadable feed. A documented source generally gives you a clearer integration point than a parser tailored to one page, though the available sources do not quantify the maintenance savings.

The Illinois Association of School Administrators’ Illinois Education Job Bank describes RSS posting feeds and says a unique subscriber ID is required: Illinois Education Job Bank. SchoolFront documents RSS and JSON feeds for internal and external postings. Its documentation says an administrator enables feeds in recruiting configuration and shares the resulting URL with a webmaster or technical team: SchoolFront. Confirm the feed’s access, fields, update schedule, pagination, and role coverage before building around it; a feed may not include every job type you need.

Check for a state-level source
Some US states aggregate vacancies posted on district sites. Indiana’s Department of Education says its statewide educator job board automatically aggregates teaching jobs across Indiana from district websites; the agency says it upgraded the board with Nimble in January 2026: Indiana DOE educator talent resources. Missouri DESE says it launched a statewide educator job board with Nimble in January 2025: Missouri DESE educator recruitment and retention. Oklahoma’s State Department of Education also describes district-job aggregation: Oklahoma State Department of Education. Check each board’s current coverage and search options; these examples do not establish a service covering every state or vacancy.
Use general federal job services only for their relevant listings
USAJOBS provides developer documentation for search, RSS, exports, and REST services. It is a federal jobs system, not a school-district-specific vacancy source: USAJOBS developer documentation.
Choose a collection method by source
| Method | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Official RSS, JSON, or API | The district or recruiting platform explicitly offers a feed or endpoint. | Access requirements, fields, update cadence, pagination, and included role types. A vendor customer may control or disable its feeds. |
| State educator job board | A state agency provides a consolidated source for relevant districts. | Geographic coverage, participating districts, job categories, and whether records link back to employers. |
| Scheduled careers-page collection | No documented structured source is available and the public page is suitable for collection. | Site-specific structure, terms and access instructions, page changes, and how you will verify records. |
These approaches are not interchangeable in coverage or authority. A statewide board may simplify discovery but is not shown to include every jurisdiction or vacancy; a feed may be configurable by the recruiting-platform customer. Use the most direct documented source that meets your coverage needs, and treat HTML collection as a site-specific engineering choice.

Build a repeatable collector for pages without feeds
Automated collection across district websites is feasible, but there is no single parser that can be assumed to work across every district. A Washington education research study describes collection from 242 of the state’s 295 district websites, with scans twice weekly—usually Mondays and Fridays—from early December 2021 through the end of December 2022. The study demonstrates a repeated-collection approach, not a guaranteed extraction rate or universal implementation.

- Inventory each source. Record the district, careers-page URL, recruiting vendor if identifiable, available structured source, and any published terms or access instructions.
- Inspect one source at a time. Identify how individual vacancies are represented, where each detail page links, and which fields are visible. Validate the approach against the actual site rather than assuming page layouts match across districts.
- Schedule recurring scans. Store each scan time and its outcome. Rechecks help reveal when a listing first appeared and when it was last observed; choose a schedule based on the source and your freshness needs rather than treating the study’s cadence as a universal rule.
- Extract and retain evidence. Capture the title, employer, location when stated, original vacancy URL, posting date when stated, and relevant description. Also retain first-seen and last-seen timestamps in your own index.
- Review changes and failures. Detect page-layout changes, inaccessible pages, and records that disappear. Do not silently convert a failed scan into evidence that every listing has closed.
Check each site’s published terms and access instructions. A publicly viewable careers page is not, by itself, proof that a particular collection method is authorized. The sources cited here do not establish one legal permission rule for every site.
Normalize records and deduplicate postings
Districts and vendors can use different titles and formats for comparable roles. Normalize enough information to search and compare listings without discarding the employer’s original wording.
Keep a useful record
- Source identity: employer or district, school if named, source page, and original vacancy URL.
- Role: original title plus a normalized category, such as teacher, paraeducator, administrator, or principal. Add subject-area specialties when the listing supports them.
- Location: the location as published, and a normalized location only where you can map it reliably.
- Dates: posting date if the source provides one, first seen, last seen, and the latest scan result. Do not present your observation date as the employer’s posting date.
- Identity: a stable record key for matching the same listing across scans and, where appropriate, feeds. A study of Washington district vacancies assigned unique IDs at first observation; a keying strategy for a new collector is an implementation choice.
For analysis of workforce demand, the Institute of Education Sciences brief recommends categorizing job titles and aligning categories with state licensure and employment data where useful: Institute of Education Sciences brief on web scraping and teacher shortages.
Match cautiously
Do not merge records solely because their titles look alike. Prefer a stable source identifier when available; otherwise match using a combination such as employer, title, location, and original URL, and preserve the underlying source data for review. A reposted vacancy, a recurring position, or several openings under one listing can make an apparently simple match ambiguous.

Represent freshness without claiming a job is open
Use language such as “listed on employer site” and show when your collector last observed the listing. Link directly to the employer’s vacancy page so readers can check the current details and application route.
If a listing vanishes, mark it “no longer observed” or “source page not found” as appropriate—not “filled” unless the employer confirms that status. The Washington study warns that administrators may remove filled positions slowly, remove vacancies that remain unfilled, and publish a single posting that does not map neatly to the number of hires. Job-posting data is therefore an imperfect proxy for actual hiring needs.
Or skip the browser setup
If your collection workflow needs a screenshot of a public careers page for review or recordkeeping, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It does not replace a feed or structured vacancy extractor: use it to capture pages, not to infer confirmed hiring status.

The feed URL is unavailable or returns an error
Check whether the source requires an account, subscriber ID, or administrator-enabled feed. Confirm the URL with the district or platform administrator and verify that the feed is still enabled. Do not assume a public page implies an unauthenticated feed.

A page scan finds no jobs
First determine whether the source currently has no listed vacancies or whether the collector failed. Check the scan result, page content, and outgoing links manually. If the page’s layout or recruiting vendor changed, update and revalidate the site-specific extraction logic.
The same job appears more than once
Compare the original links and employer details before merging. A district may publish similar roles at multiple schools or multiple hires in one posting. Keep separate records where the source indicates distinct vacancies, and retain source URLs so an operator can audit a match.

A listing disappears but may still be open
Record that it was no longer observed on a successful scan, then check the employer page or contact the source if an authoritative status matters. Distinguish a failed or blocked scan from a confirmed page scan that found no listing.
The index appears stale
Show the last successful observation per listing and the last scan time per source. Investigate missed scans and source failures separately from removals; a broken scan cannot establish that a vacancy has closed.
Questions developers often ask
Can one scraper collect teaching jobs from every district site?
The available examples do not establish a universal parser. District sites can expose different structures, so validate collection site by site and use documented feeds where offered.
Should I use the posting date or the date I found the job?
Store them separately. Use the employer’s posting date only when the source supplies it; otherwise label your own timestamp as first seen or last observed.
Does a public careers page establish permission to scrape it?
No blanket permission rule is established here. Check the site’s terms and access instructions and assess the relevant jurisdiction before collecting.
