You can keep a YouTube channel live around the clock by sending a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live through an encoder. The encoder can run on a computer, dedicated hardware, or in the cloud. Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, give the encoder the stream URL and key, load your videos, preview the incoming feed, then start and monitor the broadcast.
Choose how to run the encoder
YouTube Live receives an encoded feed; uploading a video or making a playlist on YouTube does not by itself create a continuous livestream. The encoder plays your prerecorded program and sends it to YouTube.

| Approach | What runs the feed | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | A computer running compatible streaming software | The computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain available. Plan for power, network interruptions, software restarts, and local recording if you need an archive. |
| Dedicated hardware | A streaming encoder with a supported prerecorded-playback feature | Confirm the exact device, feature, and YouTube compatibility before buying. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the AJA HELO Plus with optional PlayToStream for scheduled prerecorded playback without a computer: YouTube encoder options. |
| Cloud-hosted service | A remote service that sends the feed from its infrastructure | Check that the service supports continuous prerecorded streaming to YouTube and review its current features, recovery process, pricing, and terms. YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre as an example of a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; that is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. |
YouTube’s encoder guide covers both software and hardware encoders and lists cloud options. No single approach is required for every channel; the trade-offs are who operates and restores the feed, dependence on your local computer and connection, and whether you want local recording control.
Check channel eligibility before setup
- Verify the channel and enable livestreaming in YouTube Studio before launch. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Check that the account has no livestream restrictions from the previous 90 days.
- YouTube’s current getting-started guidance states that creators must be at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s current eligibility page in case requirements change: Get started with live streaming.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live. In Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule one for your channel and set its title, description, visibility, and other stream details.
- Choose the encoder stream option and copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Paste both into the matching fields in your encoder. YouTube explains stream configuration and key management in its encoder streaming settings.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who do not need it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
- In the encoder, choose the YouTube ingestion preset or protocol it supports, then load the prerecorded video or playlist. Set the playlist to repeat if that is the intended program. A prerecorded encoder feed is a livestream, not a Premiere.
- Review stream settings such as latency and DVR in Live Control Room. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind where available; a channel without real-time interaction may not need the lowest latency. YouTube also describes auto-start and auto-stop controls, but they do not prevent a feed or connection from failing.
Configure and test the prerecorded feed
Make bandwidth and encoder settings fit the source
Use a YouTube-compatible encoder preset and settings that match your video source and connection. The relevant practical limit is the available upload bandwidth: YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. For example, a feed set to 10 Mbps needs at least 12 Mbps of dependable upload capacity under that recommendation. Other devices and network traffic can reduce what is available, so test on the connection the channel will actually use. See YouTube streaming tips for platform guidance.

For protocol-specific configurations such as HLS, follow YouTube’s current requirements for that protocol rather than copying settings from an unrelated encoder. Most creators can begin with the encoder’s YouTube preset and verify the incoming signal in Live Control Room.
Preview before going public
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview for picture, audio, the intended playlist order, and any gaps or unexpected transitions.
- Start the broadcast from the encoder or Live Control Room, according to the configuration you chose.
- Open the channel’s watch page and check playback on a phone as well as a desktop. Confirm that viewers can access it with the selected visibility setting.
- Watch stream health and listen for audio problems after launch. YouTube’s published encoder tips recommend preparing an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. For a continuous channel, treat these as useful launch and maintenance-window preparation guidance, not mandatory timings for every tool.
Keep the feed running and plan for interruptions
A continuous broadcast depends on the whole delivery path: the source playlist, encoder, power, network, and YouTube ingestion. A local setup needs a plan for what happens if a computer restarts, software stops, or the connection drops. A hosted or hardware option changes which equipment you operate, but no approach should be treated as a guarantee against interruption. Know how to check the feed and restart it, and decide whether someone will monitor it.
Keep a separate recording if preserving the program matters. YouTube’s guidance recommends local recording as a backup and encourages checking the local archive file when testing. Recovery behavior and monitoring responsibility vary by encoder and service, so verify those details for your specific setup.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on the YouTube replay as the only copy of a continuous program. YouTube says a livestream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour archive guidance is not a stated maximum livestream runtime, and it does not guarantee that splitting a longer program will produce a particular archive result. Read YouTube’s archive live streams guidance and keep a separate recording if you need a dependable copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Clear rights and consider monetization separately
You need the necessary rights for everything in the live feed and any resulting archive, including music and other licensed material. YouTube’s livestream terms require compliance with the Community Guidelines and state that the creator must have the rights needed to exploit live and archived content, including relevant music rights: YouTube livestream terms. A streaming tool does not grant permission to use a song, video, or other creator’s work.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams and expect monetized content to be original and authentic; highly repetitive or mass-produced material may not qualify. Permission to reuse someone else’s work does not by itself make a channel eligible. Repeating a program is not automatically prohibited, but consider whether the channel provides meaningful original creative, educational, or entertainment value under YouTube’s current rules: YouTube channel monetization policies.
